Some plays have a happy ending and other plays end in a tragic, heartbreaking manner. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare two lovers from feuding families fall in love, but their love id ill fated. A young man by the name of Romeo, who is a Montague, falls in love with a young lady named Juliet, who is a Capulet. The irony of this is their families are feuding so they cannot tell their own families that they are in love. The complexity of this situation heightens when on the day Romeo and Juliet get married; Romeo kills his new cousin Tybalt because Tybalt killed Romeo’s good friend Mercutio. Then Romeo is banished from Verona by the Prince and Romeo and Juliet can no longer be together. Now the county Paris goes to Mr. Capulet and asks him for his daughter’s hand in marriage and Mr. Capulet says, “Thursday let it be; - a Thursday, tell her, / She shall be married to this noble earl” (Act 3 Scene 4). For example, while at a party at the Capulet’s house Romeo sees Juliet and just has to know who she is so he asks a servant, “What lady is that, which doth enrich the hand / Of yonder knight?” (Act 1 Scene 5). Romeo then proceeds to love Juliet thus he begins with a person who is a stranger to him at first encounter. This contributes to their tragic death because at this time Romeo does not know that Juliet is from the Capulet house with whom his own house is feuding with. Also, Romeo rushes into the relationship because not even a day after he meets Juliet he goes to the Friar and says, “We met, we woo’d, and made exchange of vow, / I’ll tell thee as we pass; but this I pray, / That thou consent to marry us to-day” (Act 2 Scene 3).
