Although a lot of people thought that Tom Robinson was guilty of raping Mayella, there was substantial evidence that shows that he clearly was not guilty of the crime he was accused of. Tom Robinson was accused wrongly of a crime he didn't commit solely because he was a black man. Tom being black in the 1930’s meant that no matter what he said or what evidence proved, he still would be accused of the crime he didn't commit because of his race.
Tom was put on trial because he was accused of raping a girl named Mayella, but when the subject was brought to court, it was asked if anyone called a doctor to see if she was actually raped but no one said they did. Rob, (Mayella’s dad ), said that he heard Mayella scream from inside of their house so he ran to her. “....Mayella was raisin this holy racket so I dropped m’load and run as fast as I could…”, he also said that when he came into the house he saw “that black nigger yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella”. Now Heck,( the sheriff ), said that she had a black eye and was beaten up on the right side of her face when Bob got to her. “ ..Oh yes, that’d make it her right, it was her right eye”. It was said that when Tom saw Bob running into the house toward him, Tom ran out the front door and down the street. There were no witnesses to crime Tom was accused of except Mayella and her dad.
When Atticus brought Mayella to the stand in court to tell her side of what happened, you could clearly tell that she was lying and that she had to
Tom Robinson is being accused of raping a white woman and would be sentence to life in jail. It was obvious that both Heck Tate and Bob Ewell had told different stories about how the room looked when they found Mayella in the room. Heck Tate had said the room had only a chair in it and Bob Ewell had said that the room was a mess. Without a doubt that either man is being dishonest. It is undeniably that Tom Robinson could not have hit Mayella.
One of the most widely watched trials in Maycomb history ended Tuesday December 9th when a jury found Tom Robinson, 25, guilty of raping Mayella Violet Ewell, 19, daughter of Robert Ewell. The guilty verdict hinged on the testimony of Robert Ewell, who claimed to have seen the crime. Tom Robinson’s Attorney, Atticus Finch put up a strong defense, but was unsuccessful in convincing the jury of twelve white Maycomb county residents that Robinson, a black man, was innocent. Finch has stated that he was disappointed in the outcome, but will appeal the verdict. The prosecutor for the state, Horace Gilmer said “he felt Robinson had gotten what he deserved.” Robinson was taken into custody following the verdict. Any appeals will take several
7). In the 1920s the Jim Crow laws were present (DBQ Project, p.7). Every state had different rules, but in all they restricted the rights of African Americans and even a white woman (DBQ Project, p.7). In Maryland white woman was not allowed to have children with black men. In Georgia black barbers could not do white woman or girl's hair (DBQ Project, p.7). In his testimony, Tom Robinson said that Mayella had tried to kiss him and as he was trying to get away from her, her Dad saw and called her names (Lee, p.260). When asked about why he felt scared Tom stated “Mr. Finch, if you was a n**** like me, you'd be scared, too.”(Lee, p.261) If Mayella was charged as guilty she could have possibly done time in
In the book, Mayella framed a black man because she had tempted him, while in the Scottsboro Trials, Victoria and Ruby framed the black youths, not because they provoked the black youths, but because they wanted to clear their own name. In the Scottsboro Trial, Ruby Bates, after not appearing for months, confesses Victoria’s motives to the court. Ruby declares that Victoria had told her to “frame up a story” to avoid morals change (Linder, “The Trial of the Scottsboro Boys”). Whereas in Mayella Ewell’s case, she frames Tom to avoid being scrutinized by the public because she was the one that provoked a black man. “She was white and she
During this time period, if black men were accused of something like rape, they were automatically put up for execution and was lucky enough to have a trial. Tom Robinson was innocent because he was crippled. It was stated that Robinson’s left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side (Lee, 2010, pg. 188). Haywood Patterson didn’t give enough evidence to make him stand out more out of the other 8 boys. People around him called him the most guilty out of all the boys because he looked like he would rape a white girl for fun, or spit on little kids for fun (Scottsboro,
Tom Robinson was accused of rape and convicted after the jury disregarded evidence that proved he was an innocent man. Robinson was a free black man with a wife and kids. Mayella Ewell claimed that Robinson forced his way into her house, raped her, and beat her. It was determined that her injuries were caused by a left handed person, thus proving Robinson’s innocence as his left arm had been crippled in an accident as a young boy. Despite Robinson clearly not being the culprit, his darker pigmented skin led the jury to convict him.
Through her vulnerability and loneliness she blamed an innocent man of rape. Mayella’s vulnerability and naiveness was demonstrated by, being abused by her father, wanting to be with Tom, and thinking Atticus was mocking her on the witness stand. During Atticus’s closing arguments he told the jury how Tom wasn’t guilty of hurting Mayella, it was actually her father. Tom was explaining to the judge what Bob had
In her defense she says that Tom attacked her and took advantage of her. In Tom’s defense he says she asked him to help her with chores and then tried to hug and kiss him.Tom says that “she says she has never kissed a grown man before... She says what her papa do to her don’t count”(Lee, chapter 19). When her father saw her through the window Tom shut his eyes tight. “He says you goddamn whore, i’ll kill ya” (Lee, chapter 19) Everyone in town knows how Mayellas father can be so when the jury saw that she had been beaten with a left hand, Mr. Finch (Toms defendant) knew it couldn’t have been
Tom Robinson is a black man accused of assaulting a white woman in a deeply segregated society. The racial bias of the time plays a significant role in the injustice he faces, as the jury is unwilling to consider the evidence objectively due to their racial prejudices. The jury’s decision to convict Tom Robinson, despite the lack of evidence, highlights the pervasive racism in the community. The trial was clearly tainted by deep-seated racial prejudice and stereotypes that assumed Tom Robinson’s guilt solely based on his race. The second reason why Tom Robinson should not have been accused of raping Mayella is because there was a lack of physical evidence.
Through the character of Tom Robinson from the jury scene and the case of Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell, the bad of humanity can be seen. Tom Robinson is an African American man who is accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. He was called over to her house to help break up the chiffarobe for a nickle. When he arrived, nobody was home except Mayella. He was accused of beating her with his left hand that
Varied points of view concerning the responsibility of one’s death often result in anger and complications. For example, in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Tom Robinson’s death could have been blamed on many people, according to the perspectives of various people. Harper Lee reveals the truth behind who is actually responsible for the death of Tom Robinson in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, through the differing opinions of Bob Ewell, Jeremy 'Jem' Finch, and Atticus Finch.
The Robinson family has lost everything. Looking for a fresh start, the family of six board a ship bound for Australia, only to find themselves in the midst of a horrific storm. Now lost at sea they can hear the cries of the ship’s crew. Only concerned for themselves the crew begs for God’s mercy. After six days of an intense storm, the ship crashes, now sinking, thinking only of themselves they leave the family behind. The Robinson family’s strong faith in God will be the only thing that gets them through. One by one they kneel down praying not for God’s mercy or for deliverance but for His will. If he takes one, let him take us all.
on the trial that Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell. He was simply blamed, because he
Atticus continues to remain calm and collected as the town continues to harass him for defending Tom Robinson. Once Tom returns to town for his trial Atticus decides to stand guard at his house knowing that trouble will arise. Low and behold, a crowd of angry racist men show up with rifles to kill Tom. Scout, Jem, and Dill arrive just as the trouble does. Atticus tries to send the children away but they refuse to leave. Scout recognizes Mr. Cunningham and goes up to him. Mr. Cunningham then calls off the mob. The next morning after the incident, marks the first day of the trial. The kids attend the trial. As the trial unfolds Mayella provides a very inconsistent recount of what happened the day she was allegedly raped. Atticus wittingly proves she is lying based on the fact that Tom cannot use his left hand due to a cotton gin incident, but coincidently her father is left handed. Tom recounts that he did help Mayella with her chifferobe, but that he helped her many times because he felt bad for her and always refused payment. Until one day she grabbed him and tried to get him to kiss her which Bob saw and threatened to kill her for it. The prosecutor questions him about how he could possibly feel bad for a white woman and gets him to admit that he is indeed strong enough to cause great harm. As the lawyers give closing remarks, Atticus shares that there is a gross lack of evidence to prove that Tom committed this crime. He does
Tom Robinson is an African-american man is accused of rape. He is in a house with a white woman helping her. what he tells the jury is what gets him put in jail. He ends telling the jury that he is sorry for Mayella and that gets him put in jail. Because African -American people are not supposed to feel sorry for a white person. Because back then the white people was supposed to feel sorry for the African-American because they was the slaves and they did not have the money to do much. But the Ewells was more poor than the African-Americans.
