Trinity Brito Tom Robinson is being accused of raping a white woman and would be sentence to life in jail. It was obvious that both Heck Tate and Bob Ewell had told different stories about how the room looked when they found Mayella in the room. Heck Tate had said the room had only a chair in it and Bob Ewell had said that the room was a mess. Without a doubt that either man is being dishonest. It is undeniably that Tom Robinson could not have hit Mayella. In Heck Tate's testimony, he states that the person that had hit Mayell in the eye was left handed and Tom Robinson could not have hit her eye because his left arm is disabled. Mayella is not a good witness because she had not answered any of my questions. Also, she had hesitated and plainly
The Tom Robinson case never needed to come to court, but since it was there are many reasons that show that Tom is innocent, and this case is pointless and a waste of time. For one, there's no medical evidence showing that the crime even happened. Then, Bob and Mayella's testimonies cannot be trusted. And last, Tom isn't lying, he is a trustworthy man, so why would he do something so horrible to someone? All of these topics prove that this case should have never been noticed in the court.
During Heck Tate’s testimony he said he found Mayella on the floor, her face and badly beaten around her neck (pg 140-142). This is important because it's one side’s perspective of the case. In Bob Ewell's testimony he stated that “he heard Mayella screamin in the house. He went up to the
Mayella Ewell unfairly accused Tom Robinson of rape because of her personal problems. She made up a story about Tom Robinson, the closest thing she has to a friend, to
Atticus proves that Tom is handicapped and cannot have beat Mayella the way she claims she has been beaten when he expresses,“Tom robinson now sits before you, haven't taken oath with his only good hand, his right” (304). If Mayella claims she had a black eye on her right eye, and bruises from someone grabbing her neck, the person who beat her had to have used mainly there left, and both hands to grip her neck. Tom Robinson’s only good hand is his right, so therefore it is physically impossible for him to have beaten Mayella. By Atticus proving this point, the jury is supposed to realize that it was not Tom who beat her. Nothing can argue against logic and solid facts, so therefore if the jury was fair they would realize it could not have been
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. Tom was married and has three kids. He works for Link Deas picking cotton, pecans, and doing work around the yard for him. Tom acquired an injury one day in Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s cotton gin when he was little. Tom passes by the Ewell place every day to get to work. Tom is put on trial for his life because the claim made by the Ewells of rape. The case is basically the Ewell’s word verses Toms. During the case Mayella slips up on what really happen. Because of the type of injury Tom has, Mayella’s slips up on the stand, and the fact that Tom was already married, the jury should acquit Tom- finding him not guilty.
Tom Robinson in “To Kill A MockingBird” was falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewill. Atticus proves that Tom didn’t rape Mayella, but the jury wouldn’t acquire him because of his skin color. They believed the Ewill’s fake story over Tom’s true story (Lee 276-283). Atticus caught Mayella in several
But Tom Schultz you ask (not Tom Robison) why would the key witness who was beat up and raped by some one else lie? Mayella is the prime victim and witness in the argument and she does her best to hold
The case of Tom Robinson was a case on whether he would be guilty for rape or not. Tom Robinson had the defendant, Atticus, with their opponents, the Ewells. Throughout the case you are able to see many different cases where Atticus made it obvious that Tom did nothing wrong and it would have been obvious that Bob Ewell would have been a likely suspect to commit the crime of rape against her daughter, Mayella. The trial showed that the justice system has flaws and doesn’t represent justice, people only make choices based on their racist views.
However, the situations in which the rape occurred are different. In the Scottsboro case, the girls said that the accused boys met them while on a train in Alabama. After fighting with and abandoning a group of white boys, the girls stated that the black boys raped them on the train car. This is similar to what happened with Mayella Ewell in the book. After giving an unconvincing story about how Tom Robinson attacked her when she was home alone. It was clear that Mayella was trying to follow a story given to her by her father. In both cases, the accusations are false, though the stories in the cases were believed at the time of the trials because “everyone will take a white mans word over a black mans” (Lee 142). Because nobody believed a black man when it came to a white man, Tom Robinson was threatened in all different ways, especially his life.
This got him sent to a prison camp. There would be no issue with this conviction if there had been any solid evidence. Mayella never went to a doctor about the alleged rape, and the only witness didn’t even see anything happen. The case against Robinson was purely circumstantial evidence. There was most certainly reasonable doubt that he did it, but he was black.
Mayella is the daughter to Mr. Ewell who testified against Tom. Even though it was obvious Tom was not guilty, the jury still found him guilty, because he was black. First of all, Tom Robinson had no muscle in his left hand because he got it caught in a cotton gin (Foote 61). Mayella's injuries were on the right side of her face, so Tom wouldn’t have been able to do that damage with a bad left hand. Second, Mayella’s stories were bad and she hesitated as she was asked the question “Do you remember him beating about the face?” (Foote 60). With this evidence any white man would have been not guilty, but people falsely accused him because he was black. Sadly, after Tom was found guilty he was shot dead trying to run away. Tom Robinson who was an innocent man, died because of the color of his skin and the assumption of his
First, Tom could not use his left hand. Tom could not have hit Mayella on her right side without his right hand. A doctor was not called when Bob found Mayella beaten up he said there was no reason to. My first reaction would of been to call a doctor for Mayella.
So what better way to get rid of his daughter’s sin, then to set up a trail to kill Mr. Robinson, and cover up his charges he would have faced of assault, at the same time. We know that Mr.Ewell beat Mayella in the heat of anger because Mayella tempted a black man. (Lee, 272) Mr.Ewell tried to blame Tom of beating Mayella, but Tom only had one good arm, and that was his left. (Lee, 315) The medical professional came in and said that someone with a dominant right arm, which is the arm that Tom couldn’t use, beat Mayella. Mr.Ewell, on the other hand, claims that he can “write with both hands” as stated in the trial against Mr.Robinson. Mr. Ewell claimed that Tom had raped his daughter, yet there is no evidence to any medical report or any phone calls to a medical professional that Mayella was beaten, or raped. (Lee, 271) If Ewell cared for Mayella, why wouldn't he have called, we knew he had a phone, given that he called the sheriff to report the rape. (Lee,
As a result of Mayella and her father being white, there should not be any complications on the jury’s decision. Although this may be true, the jury should have enough knowledge to realize that Tom Robinson is an innocent man. In Mayella’s favor, not convicting an African American being accused of attacking a white woman is unthinkable. Mayella uses these circumstances to the best of her ability
Tom Robinson enters To Kill a Mockingbird accused of raping Mayella Ewell but leaves To Kill a Mockingbird dead. Atticus Finch the defendant in Tom Robinson’s case and the father of Jem and Scout, did not fail Robinson, Robinson’s family or his own because he tried his best to prove that Tom was not guilty. For example , Miss Ewell explained that the attacker in her testimony, Tom Robinson had force himself on her, began to hold to her by the neck and hit her repeatedly after she asked him to bust up a chiffarobe for her. Heck Tate, the sheriff and witness of the trial had said Mayella only had bruises on both the neck and right side of her face, this now raised a red flag for Atticus. For Robinson to beat Miss Ewell repeatedly on the right side of her face he would have to use his left arm which got caught in a cotton gin years before. The disability that Tom Robinson had created great evidence for Atticus’s defense but didn’t work because of the unjust community they both live in. Maybe it would have worked if the trial was held in a courtroom that is built on justice for all, not just for the white.
