Born 1928, Eliezer Wiesel was welcomed into the family of Shlomo and Sarah, along with his siblings Hilda, Tzipora and Beatrice. Once Eliezer reaches the age of just 16, his once happy family ensues on a journey they will never forget: Auschwitz. The Holocaust was Wiesel's focal point in a majority of his most prominent novels. Looking back at some of his work, it is clear that the tragedies that took place throughout his lifetime had sparked a desire inside himself to inform society about the hidden truth of this living nightmare. The Night Trilogy, originally published in 1962, accentuates the struggles of a jewish adolescent who is living in a German Concentration Camp. Focusing specifically on Night and Dawn, the two can be compared although there are significant differences through the characters themselves, the themes as well as the conflicts are similar.
This tradition has gone on since camp was founded in 1951. Some examples of these competitions are; a horseshow, basketball game, soccer game, the giant relay and 4th of July relay races. Each time a clan wins one of the events they get points. At the end of camp, the winner is announced when the camp director unrolls a banner with the colors of the clan who won.
This past weekend, 108 entrants set off on a hundred mile race—the fourth annual Pine Creek Challenge. The footrace follows the Pine Creek Trail, a flat, scenic route that still provides ample challenge for the runners. Race director, Steve Hanes, comments, “For me as a race director, it’s great to see people stretching their boundaries...it's great to see people work towards something they might not have even imagined a few years ago, and come out here and accomplish something that's really noteworthy.”

She won her first medal for track and field when she was eight years old. SHe loved everything about the sport. “ I loved that I didn’t have to think, there was just the physical,” Janet Davis, 50, said. “And it helped I was good at it too.” Davis said.Davis’s love for track didn't falter as she grew older. Davis said,” Growing up in Indianola, Mississippi, meant that I had a lot of free time on my hands. So with the free time that I had, I raced and practiced. I helped me stay focused on my goal.” She raced with her sixteen brothers and sisters and as she grew even older she wanted to run even more. Following the Reconstruction Era, Jim Crow laws were legislated between 1876 and 1965 which implemented segregation in all public facilities in mostly southern states in the United States. As a result, the first wave of the Great Migration occurred – of African-Americans from the South moving North. Chicago, Illinois was one of northern cities that experienced a high influx of southern African-Americans. Compared to other cities, Chicago was considered a more liberal city since it prohibited many segregation laws. In the year 1874, school segregation was outlawed in Chicago and in 1885 segregation in public facilities was outlawed. According to the U.S. census, in 1910, 44,103 African-Americans made up Chicago’s population. By 1920
Because cross country is only one event, it has a smaller team of anywhere from one to seven runners for varsity, but the race itself has anywhere from 50 to 200 runners. A track team can have up to 60 runners on varsity, but the race will only have about eight to fifteen competitors. Due to the different number of competitors in the two sports, the awards and scoring vary. Since cross country has so many competitors, the top ten to twenty runners will receive an award that is usually a t-shirt. Sadly, track does not have as many winners in each event.
Special Awards in Cross Country/ Indoor & Outdoor Track include the Scholar Athlete Award every season participated, achieved for maintaining a 3.25 GPA or higher throughout the season. Won a 6th place Ribbon in the 4x800 meter relay for indoor track. Won an age group award at Frederick High School's sponsored 5k race which I also helped set up.
