While true friendship can weather the storm, superficial friendships can change with the seasons. In the short story “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff, a trio of men go on a hunting trip in the snow that ends abruptly when Tub shoots Kenny and they have to drive to the hospital. On their way there, Frank and Tub stop a few times, and they begin to talk and learn more about each other, all the time becoming less concerned with Kenny. These talks bring them closer while the snow outside dies away. The snowy setting is a symbol for being cold and distant to one another, drawing attention to the message that superficial relationships are not as strong as real ones. Though Frank, Kenny, and Tub may seem like friends, their relationship is cold and detached, which is reflected in the heavy snow towards the beginning of the story. When they first set out, the snow is thick and it was extremely cold, symbolizing the distance they feel from one another. Frank and Kenny are rude to Tub, cracking jokes about his weight and leaving him behind, making them even more distant. As they leave him out, Tub is “fighting away the snow with his knees and elbows” (2), symbolizing how difficult it is for Tub to connect with them. Without a deeper connection, their friendship is never past surface level, and the cold and snow remains. …show more content…
The cold and snow forces them to stop a few times, where they end up sharing more with each other than they ever would around Kenny. The snow is a catalyst for Tub and Frank forming a true friendship. When Frank apologises to Tub for not sticking up for him and even tells Tub about his affair with his babysitter, “the snowfall lightened” (7), symbolizing Frank starting to trust Tub more and lessening the distance between them. As the snow lightens, so does the distance that made their friendship
Character depth and development is the foundation on which "Hunters in the Snow" showcases its literary merit. Although the characters in "Hunters in the Snow" do not directly develop throughout the story, it is the extent to which readers are exposed to the characters' personalities that give the appearance of development. Furthermore, it can be said that in lieu of dynamic characters "Hunters in the Snow" offers round characters with dynamic relationships. This evolution of character reflects real-world transformations, for often a person's identity is infinitely complex and changes incrementally over long periods of time, while their views and opinions of others drastically change based upon daily occurrences. The reader can see such a transformation occur when Frank opens up to Tub regarding his current marital dilemma. Tub, noticing his friend's distress, comforts Frank by adding, "when you've got a friend it means you've got someone on your side" (97). Frank feeling much relieved by Tub's support admits, "it feels [good] to hear you say that" (97). This exchange strengthens the emotional bond between the two friends and sets the scene for future

In Tobias Wolff’s short story, “Hunters in the Snow”, three friends, Kenny, Tub, and Frank, go hunting in the woods in Spokane, Washington. When they cannot find any game, Kenny shoots a tree, a fence post, a dog, and acts as if he is about to shoot Tub. Tub shoots Kenny first in defense, wounding him from walking any further. On the ride back, Kenny ends up dying due to Frank and Tub’s inattention to him. The interactions between each character when forced into different circumstances reveal the theme that people are typically selfish and will tend to side with the strongest and most advantageous party.
The Winter is the opposite of summer, during the winter not only does the winter change but the town's appearance. The houses that once looked artificial were exposed and looked abandoned. “Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie...The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops...they are so much more uglier then when their angles were softened by vines and
But, unlike most good friends, Kenny and Frank do not wait for him. In fact, they start driving away without him as a joke. The snow acts as an obstacle for Tub and provides reason for Frank and Kenny to poke fun at him. These three “friends” do not treat each other nicely. With the setting being so bitterly cold, the bitterness and tension between the three men seem to intensify as well.
As I read the short story Hunters in the Snow, I was very intrigued in finding out what was going to happen next. One thing I didn’t understand was why Tobias Wolff did not provide information as to how the three men met. It kind of throws off the story in the beginning because we don’t know any information about any of the men. I was very disappointed in the ending of the story because the author didn’t let readers know whether or not Kenny made it to the hospital. Tobias Wolff’s Hunters in the Snow was surprisingly a very compelling story, I also love the outdoors and hunting is one of my hobbies so it kept me on the edge of my seat.
Coldness is shown throughout the story through the lack of interaction between society. This coldness is also displayed metaphorically through the weather and the house's lights. The story states, “To enter out into that silence that was the city at eight o'clock of a misty evening in November. " The use of imagery portrays a cold fall night, which figuratively shows the coldness of society that is portrayed throughout the story. The text uses the lighting in the room to show the indifference of society.
The short story Hunters in the Snow by Tobias Wolff depicts three men that go on a hunting trip that changes the course of their lives. Their lies impact the situations they encounter and change their lives forever.

At the start of the game, the player is visually engulfed in a sea of snow, as they bear witness to the comatose Vanye finally awakening from his slumber. Through the boy’s perspective, we are greeted to a cat named Sulpher, who reveals the protagonist’s identity and his relationship to Theofratus Aurelius. This revelation is met with both confusion and dismay, for Vanye has no memories of his father and is deeply frighten at the prospect of being alone. In this scene, the player is once again introduced to the symbolic nature of snow, for which Vanye’s voices his sadness in the hopes of being saved. Graciously, Sulpher agrees to comfort Vanye’s loneliness by forging a promise of friendship; in which, both parties will remain as friends forever.
It can then be deduced from the above statement that, there is a connection between the two of them and this connection has a capacity to melt the snow, though both parties are unstable, and emotionally distant from each other, but whenever Shimamura sees Komako he loves her. Likewise, when both are apart, then winter comes again, which brings coldness, then isolation sets in them. The togetherness brings warmth and intimacy, while the distance apart between them brings sadness, loneliness which indirectly makes the word “Snow Country” to be a metaphor. Therefore, what is happening in Snow Country as a place externally, reflects what is happening in these characters internally.
as well. Winter often accompanies dark, dreary, and somber times. In the novel, Charlie hits his ultimate low point in his battle with depression in the middle of winter. He felt that he was alone and had absolutely no one to turn to. One night shortly after New Year 's, Charlie found himself both mentally and physically lost. Suffocated by heavy thoughts, he wandered outside and laid in the snow, only for a policeman to find him “pale blue and asleep” the next day, and he “didn’t stop shivering from the cold until a long time after [his] mom and dad drove [him] home from the emergency room,” (Chbosky 98). The cold, snowy winter can be viewed as an archetype that affects how the reader perceives this point in Charlie’s transformation. The mood of the story, or how it makes the reader feel, seems much more dismal because of the time of year. The reader will be able to understand more completely how miserable of a time this was for Charlie, and he/she could potentially relate to this feeling of loneliness.
