Oppression is a constant in America’s history. African Americans were enslaved, Hispanics were discriminated and Japanese Americans were stripped of all rights. This is no different for the Filipino American population. From the heavy hand of eugenics to the unequal and unjust treatment of Filipino and Asian workers. These problems are what prompt certain individuals to spark change. Change that will help make the world safer and less oppressive. Carlos Bulosan is one of those people who took a stand for what he believes in. That people should have equal rights no matter the ethnicity or line of work. People who support that only certain people should inhabit America have singled out a certain people to keep from living in the free country. Like the Japanese, Filipino and Chinese. All three have some sort of freedom taken away from them. For example, during the Japanese internment, people of Japanese descent during WW2 were thrown into camps and stripped of their rights because of where they came from and what they look like. “It made no difference that many had never been to Japan. Even Japanese-American veterans of WWI were forced to leave their homes.”(Ushistory.org). During this time people were forced to leave their homes, businesses and land just because they are Japanese. The Chinese were also targets of discrimination. In 1882 Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act. This Act was created to keep an ethnic group from changed the “good order” of the world (Our Documents). The struggle was also found in the Filipino community when a law only allowing Filipinos to marry other Filipinos was passed (Strandjord). These types of unjust actions and laws are what propel Carlos Bulosan to take a stand against the oppressive system at
