More than 11,000 books have been challenged since 1982 (Dankowski). In 2017 alone, 354 books have been reportedly challenged (Ala.com). Book banning is the practice of removing certain books from being taught or read inside of a school. This eliminates students from being able to easily access books. Books may be challenged from anyone but parental figures tend to challenge books the most. This is due to the fact that parents want to shield their children from sensitive content. Parents should not ban literature because they should not be in charge of student education. Parents tend to misinterpret book meanings which causes irrelevant book bans. Students should be able to read any book as long as it is appropriate to their grade level, they should not be shielded from realistic stories. …show more content…
Psychologically, humans like to hear what they agree to and this includes the process of book banning. In the article, “Censorship, Clear Thinking, and Bold Books for Teens,” Gallo states, “Many critics of contemporary young adult books, like the parent in Connecticut, attack them because they often contain violence, evil, and various examples of bad behaviors. Others attack books like these because they see the books as opposed to their religious beliefs (Gallo).” Gallo is saying that books are commonly banned because of certain behaviors showcased in books. A purpose of a book is to teach through stories. If books are banned because of behaviors that are presented, books will be unable to teach effectively. If schools are going to teach through books, parents need to be more open minded with the types of books being brought into the
Although it is ridiculous to ban books, it is somewhat understandable. Some books are extremely heavy on the controversial side, and include a boat load of inappropriate content. “My corduroys. My boxers. Two layers. I could feel the warmth of her cheek on my thigh. There are times when it is appropriate, even preferable, to get an erection when someone’s face is in close proximity to your penis” (Green). It is easy to see why someone with a closed mind would take offense to this kind of content being in a book for young
Book banning is something that was been around for almost as long as books have, but why? Book banning started because certain books made different people or different groups of people feeling challenged, uncomforted, offended, etc. In other words, these books were engaging to the reader, pushed them to their limits, and really made them think about what they were reading. This is exactly what readers should want out of a book. Instead of embracing the books, many decide to get rid of it and do not want to be challenged or forced to step outside of their little, comfortable box they have for themselves. This issue of book banning is something that has gone on long enough and needs to end right now. Books are something that should be cherished and protected, not banned. Books are a very important part of today’s society and should not ever be banned.
Reason one; books should not be banned on the grounds of “they’re a bad influence”. The world is a bad influence and the people that inhabit the world are worse. In the cases of some books, some children have already lived through what has been banned. In other cases, it is just the parents being too over-proctective. They have already lived through some of the events, and do not want their kids to experience the same thing, which can also slow down how the child learns. In addition, if the students are desperate to find ideas for things because they don’t get the help from their parents, it means the parents are ignoring their kids
If a person does not like a book or genre, they are not forced to read these books. A person or group can simply put the book down and pick up one that is more suitable to their own liking. Books are not being banned for the correct reasons. Books are being banned because they are against an individual or group’s opinion. Books should not be banned because one person’s truth is different from another
The main argument for why certain books are banned in schools is because the students need to be protected from the content within the books. For example, 13 Reasons Why, a novel about a teenager who commits suicide and leaves behind thirteen tapes containing her reasons has been banned from schools such as the Colorado School District, and some Canadian schools. The book was deemed as “negative portrayals of helping professionals.” and according to Lora Strum writer of the article “Banning books like ’13 Reasons Why’ makes it harder for teens to open up to adults, the author says”, “the book glamorized suicide”. As a whole, the school districts either took
It's not right to censor the thought of some and boost the efforts of others. All members of society should have equal access to all books and . Several school districts, libraries and cities have banned books for different reasons including violence, sexual content, drug abuse, rape and content that is unsuitable for their age group. Several experts including Ana Agenjo have argued against banning any books. In her letter to the kern high
As United States citizens, we have the right of freedom of expression; the First Amendment of the United States constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press…" (First Amendment Oct. 20, 2013). As this concerns books, people should have the freedom to choose what they want to read and what they don't want to read. By banning books, our basic rights as US citizens are abused. Book banning affects many different people, from the people who read books to the people who write them. Why do
Books hold ideologies, diverse ideals, and come from facts as well as the imagination. Books are the ultimate freedom of expression for the author and the reader. One of the most valued rights, in America, is the freedom of expression. This freedom is granted by the bill of rights which is the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. Book banning violates this right; therefore book banning should be illegal in America. There are many reasons people want certain books banned. There are many examples of banned books. The Supreme Court case, Board of Education V. Pico was about book banning and upheld this right.
All it takes to challenge a book is for a parent or other citizens to file a complain against a teacher, library, school, or bookseller, for that reason many teachers and librarians choose to remove the books from the curriculum or shelves before an issue is brought up (Pitner). The fear of a lawsuit keeps many people from expressing their belief that banning books is unnecessary (Kennedy, Banned Children’s Books).
It is reasonable for a book to be banned if it is just not suitable for children as in its mature content. But if a book is being banned because of a parent who does not like the book or thinks it is a touchy subject, then it is just not reasonable and there should not even be a discussion about banning it. “Parents who don't like specific books can have their kids "opt out" of an assignment without infringing on the rights of others.” (www.procon.org/headline.php?headlineID=005365). There is no reason for a parent to try to have a book banned because they do not like the content in the book.’’ Also, the parent can choose to have their child not read the book without having it banned from the whole school. Parents should censor their own child and not the entire
There could be multiple reasons why certain books are banned. Some of the reasons may include profanity, racism, sexual content, etc. It is obvious that a book like Fifty Shades of Grey is not allowed in school, but there are parents out there who will ban books such as The Great Gatsby, Bridge to Terabithia. These kinds of books could lead the children to do horrific acts based on learning from these books. However, it could be good to have these horrific content to educate children about the various negative things that occur in this world. These banned books are meant to educate students, although the books can’t educate when there are parents are preventing them. The parents do have the right to stop their child from reading the inappropriate books, but it’s just unnecessary since the schools allow these books to be taught to the students.
As a teen, students should not be exposed to the inappropriateness that are put in books at such a young age. There are several reasons that banned books should be kept out of the classrooms. A few specifically are, racial issues, inappropriate language and sexual profanity. Some people believe books should be banned in schools/libraries because it is putting inappropriate knowledge in at such a young age.
In the infographic on banned books from 2016 the image shows that “offensive language, sexually explicit, LGBT, violence and religious viewpoints (ALA).” are the main cause for books being banned in 2016. In 2016 forty-nine percent of books were banned in public libraries (ALA). As well as in 2016 323 books were banned in 2016 (ALA). These statistics show that people fear books might have an impact on young children.
It is my belief that since by the time the child is required to read such literature in school, they are at an age where they can distinguish between things that should and should not be said and it is the job of the parents to educate the child that just because they say it in a book does not mean he or she should.Another subject common to banned and censored books is sexuality.
The most common group of people to try and ban books are parents, but other groups include school districts, teachers, communities, and religious organizations. One of the main reasons why books are banned is because adults want to shield children from certain content. Some people think that some books are inappropriate for specific age groups, which is understandable. Others believe that some books go against what they are trying to teach their children, or that it will give them a wrong idea and cause them to rebell. Also, people may ban books if they feel offended by the content, or if it contradicts their personal religious or political beliefs. Overall people challenge and ban books because they feel offended or uncomfortable about the content, or because they think it is wrong.
