In society today, there are many fictional characters people call superheroes, and many of these superheroes have abilities, not features, that are God-like, thus taking away the ability for them to be completely human. They both have many features that a hero would have, such as being strong and courageous. They both prove these features by being put to the test against their enemies. In Beowulf, Beowulf grips Grendel’s arm and Grendel is incapable of getting away without ripping his arm off. Then, Beowulf shows his courage by standing up against Grendel’s Mother and the Dragon. Captain America shows his strength because he is able to lift and throw objects, such as people, farther than a normal person. Captain America additionally shows courage by fighting for his country. Beowulf and Captain America fight for the same reasons and they accept no rewards in return. They both fight for the good of people and they fight for self-satisfaction. They also fight alone, use no weapons, and are the leaders of their armies. Captain America does have his shield and that can be described as a weapon to a certain extent, but Beowulf had to use a sword against the dragon. Unfortunately, Beowulf’s sword failed him during the battle with the

Beowulf’s people loved him, as seen when it says “kindest to his people and keenest to win fame,” (842). Captain Americas people, on the other hand, did not love him as much instead they kind of made fun of him but he still achieves fame later on. Steve Rogers believes in god, they know this because in the “Avengers,” he tells Black widow that there is only one god. While in “Beowulf,” they do not, as shown on page 7 where it says the Anglo – Saxon England cutler believes in “animinsm.” They also differ in the sense that Beowulf does not save the prisoner Grendel’s mom takes, this proven when it says “Edgetho’s son, and died there,” (628). While Captain America saves his friend and the POW from the Red Skull. The last big one, Beowulf dies after his last battle, this evident when it says, “twelve warriors road around the tomb,” (829). In Captain America the First Avenger it shows that he survived the airship crash but gets unfrozen after 70 years. Both Beowulf and Steve Rogers share their similarities and difference that represent their culture, but why do we tell epic stories like
The novel Beowulf, A New Translation with an Introduction. by Burton Raffel, is an epic tale of good vs evil. He puts his life on the line for an entire kingdom by protecting his people and proves his worthiness of a superior warrior. He is continually recognized for his strength and courage. “Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with”- Brodi Ashton. When we were little we believed people that wore capes were the only heroes, but who knew we were completely wrong? Heroes come in all shapes in sizes. They can be 6’2” wearing camo defending our country, or they could be short and stumpy helping out the homeless. It doesn’t matter the appearance of the hero, It’s the values they obtain that make them a hero. In the story Beowulf a man from the geats, who comes to Hrothgards aide to help him slay a monster, Grendel. He boasts himself up and prepares for war with the vicious beast and becomes a hero. Another hero is Achilles in the illaid by homer. Achilles fights on the greeks side against the Trojans at war. At the beginning of the illiad he doesn’t do much but in the end he ecomes a true hero. Achillies and Beowulf are two important roles in each litature piece, they teach the reader their true values of a hero based on
Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
To be an hero is to be a leader and have selflessness, not to mention they always put others before themselves. A quality of Batman and Beowulf is heroism. They live to do what is right and defeat evildoers. Batman and Beowulf improve society by protecting people who can not protected themselves. They both are brave and physically strong, but Beowulf kills his foes and Batman sends them to prison.
Not only is Beowulf honorable and well respected, he is brave as well. His courage is shown by not hesitating to risk his own life to pursue the Dane’s enemies. By being self-assured, Beowulf is able to successfully defeat the fiends, Grendel and his infamous mother. At the time Beowulf is planning to pursue the vindictive dragon, the epic poem states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.”(ll. 2511-2515). He feels no fear, is confident in fighting the dragon alone, and has no qualms in risking his life to save others. He declares his bravery by saying, “When he comes to me I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins... No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster.”(ll. 2525-2534). In his actions, Beowulf’s bravery is clearly shown throughout the poem.
Beowulf was a hero not only because of his physical strength, but also for his concern for other people. “The hero must move beyond human limits in order to have the capacity to combat the monstrous forces that threaten the social order;” (Sharma 264) Beowulf has been deemed by most to have superhuman strength, but his superhuman strength alone does not make Beowulf any more a hero than Grendel’s strength makes him a hero. Beowulf rises above the limits of a regular human being
Heroes bring a hope to people whom they protect. Heroes bring people joy and bring a sense of relaxation to the people of their society because they play such an important role in lives everywhere. Heroes are complex rather than unembellished because they can fight dragons to defend their kingdom, or create a non-profit foundation to enhance the quality of life for more than 2,000 underprivileged kids. Heroes in our present day can be very complex because a person’s viewpoint on a hero’s life can be a completely different than the way another person looks at that same hero. Thomas Davis Sr. can be extremely comparable to Beowulf but they also have major differences.
Beowulf was the first superhuman ever to be written about; he’s basically the great-grand father of all modern day fictional heroes. But does that mean that all heroes are modeled exactly like Beowulf? Well, let’s take a look at Batman whose known by every kid and adult out there. He like Beowulf had years of rigorous training in order to become too strong muscular hero that we see; and that is where they split apart Beowulf’s and Batman’s back stories are as different as their personalities. In the end though everyone comes to the point where they realize that they aren't as young as they used to be and with their line of work it can come quick and fast. So as they’re final act they name a successor to protect the people in their charge. These heroes both protect people but they do it it for different reasons entirely.
