“Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with”- Brodi Ashton. When we were little we believed people that wore capes were the only heroes, but who knew we were completely wrong? Heroes come in all shapes in sizes. They can be 6’2” wearing camo defending our country, or they could be short and stumpy helping out the homeless. It doesn’t matter the appearance of the hero, It’s the values they obtain that make them a hero. In the story Beowulf a man from the geats, who comes to Hrothgards aide to help him slay a monster, Grendel. He boasts himself up and prepares for war with the vicious beast and becomes a hero. Another hero is Achilles in the illaid by homer. Achilles fights on the greeks side against the Trojans at war. At the beginning of the illiad he doesn’t do much but in the end he ecomes a true hero. Achillies and Beowulf are two important roles in each litature piece, they teach the reader their true values of a hero based on …show more content…
Beowulf shows he is extremely loyal. He show’s this when he comes to Herot and take Hrothgards command to kill Grendel. After he destroys Grendel, Hrothgar tell him he must destroy Grendels mother as well. Beowuld being the loyal man he is accepts the challenge and slays Grendels mom. A clear difference, Is Achillies. Achillies is very prideful, due to his actions. Achillies doesn’t fight because he doesn’t agree with his king. Achillies only fights when his beloved cousin is killed because Hector from Trojans. He is in anger then fights. This shows he is prideful because he only comes to action when he is hurt. Beouwulf and Achilles are heros but a different due to their values. Beowulf is loyal and achillies is prideful. Although both heros are great, one shines brighter than the other. Its Beowulf because he is the only true hero based on his
Throughout the story Beowulf displays many attributes of a hero. For example, he displays bravery, honor and strength in many situations throughout the entire story, proving to everyone why he is a hero. Although these aren’t all of the characteristics of a hero, these are the most important of a hero back in Beowulf’s time and these characteristics is what most people strived to have but only came to a select few.
When thinking about the values in which warriors have many things come to mind in today's generation, many believe that a warrior is someone that just fights and wins battles, but in fact, the medieval era had a different idea of what it means to be a warrior. These values that the medieval period had are completely different as it focused on the concept of honor, respect for one's king, and the glory of battle. These values can be seen throughout history one such example being the poem Beowulf as it shows these values through Beowulf and his men. This poem also demonstrates the idea that even though the roughest of a task that good will always prevail against evil and that the idea of fate decided everything from battle being won to the day you die.
Beowulf and the soldiers that fight for our country represent the true definition of a hero. They prove heroism in an astounding amount of ways. Both Beowulf and our soldiers continuously risk their own lives to handle the situations in the best way possible. The world lies in the palm of their hands; whether it is an epic story or the life we live day by day. “Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.” Lives are constantly saved by the heroic deeds both heroes partake in. The heroes fight to protect the good against the evil. Both are then rewarded with praise and treated with a great deal of respect. The heroes face obstacles that put their own lives at stake but this does not cross their mind for even a brief second. The two types of heroes display courage and in return receive respect and rewards.
The hero archetype is represented by Beowulf himself and other great warrior characters, being extremely strong and brave in the critical moments without fail and seemingly immortal at times. Beowulf was a great example of a hero, due to his many heroic qualities and great deeds. Beowulf was brave, selfless, and fearless. While fighting battles and helping others, Beowulf did not fear death, and was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice at any moment for
Heroes are heroes because they show exceptional amounts of courage, and they do it consistently on the everyday basis. That is not possible to do. The extraordinary things that Beowulf and Sir Gowain do are things that the average man would not do because of the lack of courage and confidence. That is why heroes are who they are, the best of the best. They stick out from the crowd and that is why one may feel like they deserve more than just the regular confidence that the average man gets, it is only necessary. Being a hero is more of a mental challenge than anything else, because one has to believe in oneself more than any other person can believe in them because whoever believes in the hero can not possibly know and understand just exactly what the hero is going through. The other characters will never know and understand why the hero faces the problems, defeats the problems, and overcomes the obstacles that the hero faces. All that the characters and the people want in the stories is for whom ever the hero is, they want that person to save them from the people or things that threaten them. In other words, the people do no care so much about what the hero is going through, the people just want the hero to deliver, so it is an absolute must for the hero’s confidence to be above the average person. This also applies for real life experiences for this day and age. The only difference is this is real life, and
Heroes, from Beowulf to Superman our cultures have always created heroes. We may always have political, social, economic and religious differences, but at the end of the day we all have one thing in common, heroes. They help define who we are and what we want to be. They give us hope and inspire us to head in the right direction. They show us that good will always triumph over evil and that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Heroes give us the inspiration we need to overcome problems in our own lives and that is why we create them. Beowulf perfectly embodies the idea of a hero. He defeats the evil Grendel and his mother, slays the dragon and saves his people. He is
Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
“We look not only to public figures, but we look more broadly, across the culture, for the kind of values that we think are important during a time of crisis” (Cannon). The heroes in today’s world are quite different from those of the past and those of the future. Currently, a hero could be anyone you look up to for both the right and wrong reasons, whereas formerly, heroes were people who were looked up to due to their miraculous actions. Along with this, most of our heroes today are unsung and anonymous, unlike in the past. Beowulf was the greatest hero of his time, and so was Achilles. Beowulf was a respectable, brave, and loyal man who is important for the reason that he saved Hrothgar’s kingdom from the monster Grendel, and Grendel’s mother. Achilles on the other hand was fearless, motivated, and a risk taker while fighting in the battle for what he believed in. Both leaders have heroic traits, but they vary
The protagonists in The Illiad and Beowulf are represented as resilient and daring individuals, which is mostly correct. However, the characters Achilles and Beowulf go through tragic experiences that leave them transformed. The godlike Achilles is distraught from the loss of a dear friend who was murdered. This encourages him to participate in the Trojan War to get his revenge. The fostered Beowulf is a loyal man who encounters many mythical creatures to save the kingdoms. The two heroes have different situations, but are normal humans who are placed on an elevated pedestal by the communities. The impression of a hero is that an ordinary individual finds a type of toughness that is endured to overcome difficult obstacles that are faced throughout
Growing up, everyone has a idea on what a hero looks like. Heros represent a lot of different aspects of bravery. Every culture in history has had a heroic figure. In most cultures heroes portray different aspects of being a hero. In Anglo-Saxon times heroes were considered strong, and fearless. Beowulf is a true epic hero in Anglo- Saxon times because he is very fearless, strong, and honored.
One quality that makes Beowulf a hero is his unnatural strength. Beowulf could take down giants and other monsters with his bare hands. The text points out Beowulf’s strength when it says he is “...greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world.”. He killed many of his enemies, and hunted
Throughout the story, Beowulf displays many attributes of a hero. In the story Beowulf shows many characteristics of hero such as strength, courage, and intelligence. The battles Beowulf is involved in is how Beowulf earns his fame and gains these characteristics. Heroes comes in all different shapes and sizes. This is clearly seen when comparing the heroes in the stories of Beowulf, Cuchulainn’s Boyhood Deeds, Lanval, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. For example, Beowulf and Cuchulainn both share traits of a hero; however, have drastic dissimilarities.
A hero is one who is not only strong, but one who uses his strength to uphold others. A hero is humble, philanthropic, magnanimous and selfless, a humanitarian at best. In the unprecedented epic Beowulf, the tale’s namesake exemplifies every characteristic befitting an Anglo-Saxon hero. He is honest, loyal, and courageous. He portrays these characteristics in the battle against Grendel, the affray with Grendel’s mother, and the fight against the dragon that inevitably ended his life.
Beowulf is a hero, and we all know a hero when we see one. There are many traits and characteristics that make someone a hero. These traits and characteristics are more expressed in ancient epics and poems. Beowulf is one of the most famous ancient Anglo-Saxon poems still taught to this day in schools and colleges all over the world. The story starts off of how a man by the name of Beowulf receives news that a neighboring land is being terrorized by a monster named Grendel. Beowulf shows several characteristics of here such as, bravery, loyalty, generosity, friendship, and showing a high level of intellect. Beowulf first shows his heroic character through his bravery while journeying on his epic quest. There are several cases where he is not afraid, and instead of being frightened, he shows great bravery. An example of from the poem is, “Instead, they inspected omens and spurred his ambitions to go, whilst he moved about like the leader he was, enlisting men, the best he could find; with fourteen others the warrior boarded the boast as captain” (Beowulf 205-210). This quote gives proof of his bravery because he was the head of the group leading his men. Beowulf proves that even he himself must be brave in order to lead the bravest of men into battle.
