During my second week of my community health hours, I was placed at River City Food Bank. River City Food Bank’s main goal is to lessen hunger in the Sacramento region by offering healthy food and assistance to vulnerable populations. They do not only provide healthy food but they also provide nutrition education and counseling. In addition, they provide diapers for babies and the older population. They also provide health services for mothers and assist them with contraceptives and other important education for their women daily life. Their mission is to help people from all ages, from homeless to the working poor and families who are struggling.
5. Some of you may be hesitant to get up off of the couch and start walking.
Food stamps are an important component of low-income families’ monthly resources, increasing the chances that families are able to meet basic needs (Ratcliffe, McKernan & Finegold, 2008). This form of food relief dates back to the Great Depression when many Americans lost their jobs and did not have money to feed their families. People were starving while farmers produced abundant crop that could not be sold due to a lack of consumers with buying power (Dorsch, 2013). The Federal Surplus Relief Corporation which was a part of the Agricultural Adjustment Act, bought basic farm goods at low prices and distributed the among hunger relief agencies in different states and local communities (Congressional Digest, 2013).
These were all proven by the group members when the director shared with us that she was once part of a family who looked to a food bank for help. This created the passion and motivation for her to stand behind a worthy cause such as this one.
On Tuesday evening, over fifty of our leaders from Auto, Innovation, and Recovery came to fight hunger and feed hope at the San Antonio Food Bank. Collectively they sorted through 20,330 pounds of food which resulted in 16,264 meals for the city of San Antonio and it's surrounding counties. It was an evening of camaraderie and fun that will never be forgotten.
In conclusion, hunger in America is at an all time high due to poverty and the economy. The increasingly high number of starving children has gone up over the past years and needs to be stopped. There are government programs set up to help stop hunger in American, such as, SNAP Food Stamps and WIC. We can get involved by volunteering with Feeding America or other non-for-profit organizations set for feeding the hungry. Food donations and monetary donations have always been a great way to help out for those who don’t have the time to donate.
The social issue that they are addressing is poverty, hunger, and low income. A lot of people who are on disability, food stamps, and people with no jobs are the ones who receive from the food pantry. The Plain City food pantry impacts the community by providing for those who have no other support.
Families that struggle to provide a meal for their family depend on food banks to get food for their family .The essay state “And some kids don’t get enough to eat, no matter what people want to tell themselves.”(Page-223) Many kids would be happy
All Faiths Food Bank is an organization that collects food products from many donation sources and distributes them to local people that are in need. The organization moves the food through its 20,000 square foot warehouse, off Fruitville Road in Sarasota (A). After the food is properly inspected, it is then distributed to, currently 184, Sarasota and DeSoto County agencies and outpost centers, such as mobile pantries at community centers and churches (A). Those that are deemed financially eligible applicants can then receive their, much-needed, nutritional assistance. Because of the summer programs last year, such as the backpack program, 26,986 children received food; this equates to 1,994,415 meals (B). It is estimated that All Faiths Food Bank supplies a total of approximately 8 million pounds of food per year, which equates to 6.5 million meals (A).
The New York Common Pantry is such a wonderful organization which is dedicated to reducing hunger throughout New York City while promoting dignity and self-sufficiency. They do this through an array of programs including Choice Pantry, where participants can select nutritious food packages to bring home and cook for their families; Hot Meals, where participants can come enjoy a warm breakfast and/or dinner most days of the week; and Nourish, which helps low-income seniors by supplementing their diets with nutritious foods. In their last fiscal year they served over 493K New Yorkers and distributed over 6 million meals!
This assignment is very interesting. To many, it may seem ridiculous or silly 10 dollars for a meal that feeds 3-4 people may seem weird. I, on the other hand, can relate to it growing up limited money for food was normal. I hope you don’t think I have an advantage or had ideas on what I wanted to buy because honestly, I didn't know back in the day how much my parents were really spending to feed my brothers and I. Thankfully today our family is doing a lot better with our food situation.
11. My quota for helping with the baby sitting was less than I hoped for.
I have lived a rather sheltered life. My family has never really had any struggles or hardships. I have never had to worry about when and where my next meal will be, or when I will be able to sleep comfortably again, and until recently I took that for granted. Last winter, I went and volunteered at The Greater Boston Food Bank with the varsity hockey team for my school. I had never done any volunteer work of this nature before, and I was interested about what happened at larger food banks like this one. We worked to separate the donated meat packages into different boxes based on what type of meat they were. We also had to discard any food that was not safe to eat. I did not meet anyone who actually needed the food, but seeing the condition some it was in opened my eyes.
There are so many people in this world today, that are not aware of the huge storage in our local food bank community. Per the Houston food bank the goal of the Feeding America program is to make food accessible to feed hungry people in their greatest times of need. Therefore, our team is gear up to break the food shortage in defining the problem, analyze the cause, identify criteria, potential solutions and selecting the best solution.
In 2014, a foundation called Feeding America did a survey on the people they serve and found that in order to stretch their food budgets 79% of them purchase inexpensive and unhealthy food in order to stay fed. This can seriously impact their health, because no matter the age, healthy bodies and minds require nutritious meals. In some cases, food insecurity can even lead to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. These are just a few examples of why food insecurity is so harmful. Fortunately, there are many organizations, clubs, and foundations that are committed to ending hunger in America, and eventually the world. The first step to solving this problem is spreading information, and realizing just how dangerous food insecurity is, and who it affects. After learning these things, you may want to help and there are many ways to do that. I’m sure in the past, you've donated food to the annual canned food drive our school puts on, and that’s just one way you can contribute to solving this problem. There are many organizations that ask for donations and will put your money to great use, for example every dollar you donate to Feeding America will provide 11 meals for a child in need.If you don’t have food or money to donate, you can donate
