The word, ‘fairness’, is the meaning of the term Equality. For example, equality is making sure that all people have fair and equal access to services, such as doctors, medications and treatments. It also means being equal in rights, status or opportunities given to people. All individuals should be treated equally, and there are laws in place to ensure that this happens. For example, all work places should have an “equal opportunities policy”. Equality is about ensuring that each individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents, which also means believing that no one should have poorer life choices just because of where, what or whom they were born, what they believe, or whether they have a disability. Diversity means recognising that everyone is different in some way. Significantly this also means ‘valuing’ the difference. For example, gender has the possibility to affect how long people live, just like ethnic origin can affect a person’s experience of ill health and the way people observe religion can affect the food choices made by individuals who follow the faith. The concept of diversity embraces acceptance and respect. It means understanding that everyone is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the lines of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, or other principles.
