This first semester at the University of Akron has flown by. I learned many new writing concepts that helped me become a better writer. English composition was a required class that I had to take in order to get my degree. Although this class was required I still wanted to take this class to become more knowledgeable about writing. Coming into English Composition I was worried about all of the papers and the workload that I would have to complete. I knew that I was going to have to write a lot more than I previously had in highschool, but I was unsure of just how much. The works that I decided to include in my portfolio comprise of my Literacy Narrative, Image Analysis Paper, and essay titled Mayas Hardships based on Maya’s experiences in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I selected these works because I felt that they are the ones that require the most improvement to them. The papers i've chosen show how far I’ve came In English Composition. I have learned how to properly articulate and develop a thesis statement, how to write while keeping the audience in mind, and how to engage in the steps of the writing process in English composition 110.
I decided to pick the first paper of the semester which was the Literacy Narrative. In this paper I learned how develop my thesis. I used the xyz form that I was taught this year to make my thesis more clear and able to understand. This was a major problem I faced coming into this year. I’ve gradually become better in this area taking
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
It's hard to believe that it’s already time for Midterms in my English 101 class. The adventure has been a lot easier than I at first anticipated. In any case, I am happy that I am taking the class and learning from it. In the beginning it appeared somewhat hard however I was resolved to compel my way through this class regardless of what difficulties I needed to persevere.
I'm writing this in the hopes that whomever it is that I should contact for help with scheduling may find it. I am not entirely sure if it is currently going to someone whom it may concern as the only counseling email listed is yours. If you are capable of assisting with this plight, please disregard this paragraph, otherwise I ask that you please forward it to whoever will best handle it.
The overall course of English 102 with Professor Lyn has impacted my writing and me as an individual. Not only did the course help me improve my writing, but it helped me think of the ideas and norms that we ascribe to in the world as more complex. This portfolio shows how some of the learning objectives of English 102 reflects my growth as a writer and thinker. The papers that are included in this portfolio demonstrate my mastery of the learning objectives of this course. There are first drafts to show where I began in my writing process and final drafts to demonstrate my understanding of what was wrong in my first submissions. My ability to edit and recognize errors in my paper shows my improvement of writing. The different types of writing and audiences the papers are intended for impacted my approach of writing these papers.
In English Composition II I have been learning how to use all parts of higher-level thinking. I believe this should help me to view the discussions and debates gone over in class in a different perspective. I have learned about socioeconomic qualities, the notion of race, and identity crisis that will help me to cope with people feelings and mines have found better ways to cope avoiding the stereotypes that history has left certain groups of the population with a cold shoulder. I have learned the proper ways to oversee the issues and problems in the recent units we’ve read. I believe these topics I can always learn from to make me become a leading student. I like to find better ways and solutions to help me distinguish the concepts of the
English IV is a very exciting class. You do a lot of work in there but when it comes down to it it’s worth it. You right about everything you read in the class so you have to pay close attention to what you reading. You have some projects but when you do them, they are very fun. I’m going to tell you what i did in english IV in these next paragraphs.
This class’s challenges have been extremely rewarding. I have always enjoyed essay-style writing and I am always eager to work on my skill and style. I would have to say that creating my thesis with three main points that I can further develop has been the most challenging to me. This is because I learned to discuss each of my main points in each of the sentences leading up to my thesis statement; thus, creating my first paragraph of my paper. I am aware that this is not that far from how we are being taught to do it now, but it is more difficult than not to change old habits. If I had any advice to give to future students of this course, it would be to always clear your mind before you begin brainstorming and preparing your outline. Once
This essay will be about my reflection on this years English 4 class. This class has been helpful and has helped me improve on a bunch of stuff. Also I got to enjoy taking it with my friends and that made this year go by a lot faster.
Hello, I’m Emma Cortina, I go by she, and you can call me Emma. I am very excited to be in your class this year and hope to learn as much as I can about reading and writing.
“A good school teaches you resilience - that ability to bounce back” - Kate Reardon. This was my first year having an english class in HBU and I was quite surprised. I expected the class to be very tough with at least a million essy’s,but it wasn’t at all that I saw it to be. English class was more of an averaged pace class with a good amount of time to get assignments done. My expectations for english class included a lot of stress and essays almost everyday, but to my surprise the class was a little more lax.
In my essay there wasn’t a drastic changed throughout my essay. There are small changes that needed to be done. Some of the changes I made were spelling errors and really word choice. I sometimes forget how to spell certain words at times, so I had to made those changes. My word choice is good, but it could be improved and stronger. I had try to use stronger word choice throughout the essay to make it flow better and sound proper. I may have to look up AP words that would help improve my vocabulary and make my essay stronger. The reason I had chosen the adversity paper is because it’s one of the few high scores that I had obtained in the class. Since writing essays are not my strong point, this paper is one of the few that I receive
Make high school your number one priority. This reflects back on my high school journey because it is something that my sister would tell me.
The topic of my English 1101 class this semester was “American Murder” which, to me, is as interesting as an English class gets. The only downside was its integration of forcing students to participate in WOVEN communication. In fact, the whole goal of the course was to turn students into better multimodal communicators; the secondary goal was to enhance our knowledge on murder in America. I hated that, I wanted to learn more about murder in America, not do stuff that triggered my social anxiety. What I absolutely hated the most, however, was the fact that this class was actually useful. Using multimodal communication actually makes sense and could just be that difference between a “meh” performance and an incredibly amazing one. That being said, I do struggle with some of the concepts of multimodal communication. I struggle with all of them but I do struggle with one way more than I struggle with the others because social settings give me anxiety. Given this information, it wouldn’t surprise you to know, that I, Alessandria Holley, am a pretty bad oral communicator.
In Mrs.Yu’s class I have acquired multiple tips and tricks to write more appealing essays. To make our essays better, our class has learn daily words to improve our vocabulary skills. In addition to learning new words, our class would create a sentence using the word helps us understand the word better to allow use to use them in our own sentences. Some examples of these words include, irresolute, consecrate, escarpment, monolithic, incandescent, and much more. Although our class spend numerous hours perfecting our essays, Mrs.Yu had us research and discover interesting facts about William Shakespeare. To begin our Shakespeare research, I wrote a biography on Shakespeare with the help of my index cards packed with useful information. Soon
English Composition has taught me countless different skills that I can now apply to future writing projects. Among many things, the three lessons that I got the most use out of are the following; how to correctly structure an essay, different methods of writing, and the personal growth that I’ve had since taking this class. With English being my second language, it is difficult for me to express myself in writing form. It is extremely frustrating to have countless ideas and opinions that I would like to share with an audience, but because I am not comfortable with writing, I stay silent for many things. Taking this course has helped me open up as a person and express some of my views. Writing is a form of art that many people forget about or avoid. Art is a beautiful subject that help many people express themselves. Art comes in numerous forms, for example, drawing, painting, music, dance, and even writing. I believe that it is important to keep art alive as it shows the beauty of the world through a multitude of eyes. That is why I will vouch that reading and writing need to be kept active in every culture.
