Many of the goals of English 1103 can be directly compared to the goals of medical professionals when treating patients. In this way I am able to connect the lessons I learned throughout this semester to my ultimate career goals.
Just as the students in English 1103 are expected to “write papers in and out of class using processes that include discovering ideas and evidence, organizing that material, and revising, editing, and polishing the finished paper,” doctors work in and out of the office to organize paperwork and revise and edit treatment plans in order to give the patient the best treatment possible while discovering new treatment options, as well as proof that they would be effective (12). This kind of dedicated treatment requires

Every ailment presents differently in every patient, because of this Doctors have to be able to critically think their ways through the process. The only difference is that the end result is a treatment plan, as opposed to a thesis, that they must be able to support. This becomes difficult when the patient is unable to articulate what is bothering them. Because of this talking to children in the medical field is very different from talking to adults. It is much harder to determine what is wrong with a child because it is harder for them to articulate how they feel. For example, doctors can cater to their needs by using smiley face charts for pain scales. This type of catering to an audience is parallel to the English 1103 goal that students will “develop a sense of voice appropriate to the subject, the writer's purpose, the context, and the reader's expectations” (13). In situations such as these where doctors are having to “address…a range of audiences” they will have to handle communication with the children very differently than the parents or an adult patient …show more content…
Medicine is not a science it is a practice. Doctors practice medicine. I view my writing the same way, there is not a specific science to my writing, it is a practice. I practice writing. Sometimes I just start writing letting the words flow from my head to my paper and then go back to organize them and expand upon them later. However, other times I prefer to have a specific outline drawn before I begin forming my thoughts into words. Neither of these ways are wrong, and neither are better than the other. Just as in medicine two doctors could have two different opinions on which antibiotic to give a patient, they are both antibiotics and will ultimately have the same result, a healthy patient, or in the case of my writing, a final
One of the challenges high school seniors face is to choose whether to further their education or not. Many students choose to go on to college to get degrees or certificates, but many do not. College certainly is not for everyone. College is important though for people who want to obtain jobs that require getting a degree. I am a person who wants to get a career that requires a quality college education. I will experience many challenges and obstacles throughout my college education. I know taking a Composition and Rhetoric class will be one of these challenges. I am taking English 1101 because I have to in order to get my degree, because I want to get ahead, and because I expect to develop better writing and communication skills.
English 111 has made a positive impact on me as a student. I have learned a lot in English considering the short amount of time I have spent in the class. English has always been one of my strong points, but I have always looked to find ways to improve my English skills. During the class I learned several new techniques and skills to improve myself as a student. I am glad I had a smart professor to help guide me along the way.
what it really means to practice medicine. From both pediatricians I learned that solutions can be found by
The primary aim of English 1101 is to prepare the student to effectively communicate, and identify or create new knowledge in various spheres of life. English 1101 assisted me to have control over the writing conventions through extensive writing practice or reading, guided by evaluations and feedbacks from my course instructor. The course contains several topics namely; effective writing processes, rhetorical organizations methods, academic writing formats and styles, critical reading skills, researching, and citing the researched sources.
In English 1101 we wrote several pieces of writing. Each piece was unique and I learned new things with everyone. My favorite piece of writing was the research paper because I could choose the topic and it was a topic I think is very interesting. Even though it was probably the hardest one to write I thought it was my best piece and I loved my topic of Genetically Engineered Babies. My least favorite was the memoir because I struggled writing it and I had trouble picking a topic. It turned out being a really good memoir but I didn’t love writing it. My strongest piece is probably my common app essay because I put everything I was into that paper. My paper was called “I’m So Much More Than a Test Score”. It was really powerful and explained
While biology is an extremely demanding field to study, it has a broad variety of careers in the long run. Choosing to become a medical examiner is frightful in the sense that I have many years of school ahead of me, but doing something that interests me will be pleasant in when I am an adult. While writing in my major is not one of the key components of biology, it is still important to communicate findings to experiments. This bleeds over into being a medical examiner as well. This career insists you have a good back ground in writing in order to communicate what is found when doing an
I intend on acing English 1102 online. Prior to this course, I was home schooled for three and a half years, and many of my classes were online. One of the online programs I used was Florida Virtual. Additionally, I have completed three online college courses—including English 1101. Because I have engaged in online schooling, I have established the skills necessary to devote myself not only to a physical classroom, but also to online environment. In the beginning, being self-motivated was difficult. I transitioned from a public middle school to a self-disciplined online program. My busy mother could do little to help me be accountable for my school work. As time progressed, I wormed myself into a pit of unfinished assignments. My parents stepped
Dez' Janani Mangram is currently a freshman enrolled at Clayton State University working hard on her BA degree in Biology to become a surgeon. She has never been a huge fan of writing, but coming to college has helped her gain more knowledge on how essays should be organized and constructed. She has written many essays and reports since coming to Clayton State, she plans on writing many more reports as she further her medical career. In the future she plans on using writing as way to distribute out patients medicine, and write down signs and symptoms of a patient. She feels that writing is important in the medical field because just one little mistake you make writing down someone prescription can cause epic problems in their
Reflective Essay of 1101 and 1102 English I originally took English 1101 at Atlanta Technical College and now I am completing my English 1102 at Clayton State University. Before taking English 1101 my writing skills was kind of remediate because I had been out of school for at least ten years. The first thing we learned in English 1101 was understanding the main principles of effective writing, how to engage your audience in your writing and essay development. My assignments covered a variety of writings such as descriptive essays, personal essay, analyzing quotes and narrative essays. We wrote in journals which allowed us to express our personal feelings about a specific topic.
English 1101 has been a very informal course. I have enjoyed hearing pointers and tips from a published and experienced author. Mr. Atkins has made English not only enjoyable but engaging. I will more than likely sign up for English 1102 with Mr. Atkins, because the simple English and grammar tips he bestowed onto us.
For the short amount of time I have attended English 1101 through Sinclair I have learned that college courses are not like high school. English 1101 is even a sugar coated version of a real college class because I do not leave my high school campus. This class puts a lot more responsibility on the students compared to high school. I noticed that my usual procrastination did not make the cut. I have perceived that my grammar, vocabulary, and editing skills have
What is data? Well from the definition, data are facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis, sometimes being more of an opinion then fact in certain situations. But what happens when an entire generation of Millenniums gets together, create a survey of varying questions and make a data set of the responses? Well for example, that’s exactly what my English 1102 class was tasked with and, in result, you find similar minds. In fact, you find this same similar mind across many generations depending on age. For example my generation had a lot of topics dealing with drugs, alcohol, current events and politics. The same topics were probably on the minds of Baby Boomers around the age 18 - 27. These are just the questions
After completing English 1101, I expected English 1102 to be easier. When I started doing the work in the class and taking tests, I realized that the work was a little more challenging. Now that I have finished the second part of this course, I really have grown to like reading and writing. This course is a great course to take because it has given me a lot of knowledge on how to write a great paper, and it taught me there is a lot of things to write about.
The revision exhibit shows my improvement as a writer throughout the course of English 1101. For my revision exhibit, I chose to show my revision process from my first essay where I write an evaluation on the restaurant Clocked and how it can make one feel at home. When I first turned in my evaluation, I was confident that I would receive a high grade. However, after receiving peer reviews from my classmates and comments from my professor, I realized that my evaluation was far from perfect. The following excerpt is from the introduction and body paragraphs of my first essay. Below, I included a key of what each highlight color means. Whenever something is highlighted in my paper, there will be a footnote next to it. At the bottom of the pager,
You need not be a scientist or doctor to become a medical writer but you must possess the relevant skills to collect an collate scientific data and then present it to the medical fraternity in a proper and timely manner. Without presenting the data in an accurate and digestible manner the research work is of no use. As a medical
