The first few years of college student’s lives are not necessarily the most enjoyable time, having to take the basic core classes. Unless someone is planning on getting their degree in something that involves the basic core classes like; Math, Psychology, any Humanities, or English. English has not been my strong suit and I know that I still have work that needs to be done to make me a better writer, but I believe that I was able to meet and achieve the goals and requirements of this Composition two class.
Reading the syllabus for English 111 nothing surprise me about it. I usually expect to see these policies and rules been enforcement for a safe environment for learning. After taking this course, I look back at the writer that I was at the beginning of the course compared to the end. I have changed significantly as a writer. I am able to look at different writing assignments and determine that each assignment is unique. Meaning, not all writing assignments can be composed or formatted the same. I have instilled in myself that you do not have to write the way the textbook teaches. The freedom to write in your own fashion and still successfully complete the assignment makes someone a good writer and produces good writing.
Taking English 1102 my second semester has given me the opportunity to develop my professional writing skills. I learned how to use the writing process effectively by brainstorming ideas, making drafts, and peer evaluations. In addition, I learned the title should give the reader a clue about the main idea of the paper. In my opinion, writing is simply expressing thoughts in a definite form. This self-assessment essay will reflect on my most successful and problematic assignments, errors in my writing, and how I have changed as a writer over the semester.
According to the Andrews University 2015-2016 Bulletin, this course provides an “Introduction to college writing focusing on composing as a recursive process for generating meaning and communicating effectively. Emphasizes short analytical essay writing based on reading, media, film and other relevant discourse, including selections that examine issues of diversity.”
I wanted to take this class because I really want to further my knowledge on writing and to help me to prepare for what my college papers are like so that I don’t go to college not knowing how to write correctly. I also wanted to take this class because writing will always be a part of my life, not only in college but, most likely in any job that I have when I'm older, it will also help me now in high school for other classes.
Writing takes an enormous part in our daily life: it represents in many occupations; it assists the communication and thinking skills; more importantly, it is a tool that helps us to refine, but at the same time explain our ideas. Knowing that, two months ago, I decided to register for an English class, with a pretension of advancing my writing plus reading skills. However, what I accomplished from the ENG1101 is beyond my expectation. Not only did it bring me numerous of valuable experience, but it also helped me prepare for my upcoming courses and future.
Being aware of my strengths and weaknesses in the writing realm informs me of areas that allow me to succeed and areas where I need to fix and improve. By having goals that center around educational goals such as getting good grades and enhancing my current writing abilities, I am able to remain focused and determined throughout the school year. I am certain that taking this course is entirely beneficial to a student because it teaches us essential composition skills that we will be able to use throughout our
I begin to question myself when I write in the wake of taking this class. I expect a higher nature of my work. I am now proposing the class to some of my friends who are intrigued by enhancing their written work abilities. The class is a great deal of work, however its completely worth it.
Throughout this semester, there were many obstacles that I had to face regarding the different assignments assigned. However, I was able to effectively complete all of these tasks to the best of my ability regardless of the amount and specific requirements each one possessed. I also managed to gain a better understanding of the certain processes required to create successful essays. I realized that it was extremely important to stay on task, manage my time wisely, and organize my information in a way that would make the writing process easier. This realization and understanding ultimately allowed me to easily take on more extensive assignments, such as the Rhetorical Advocacy Project.
The first two assignments in this class made it clear to me that the objective had nothing to do with my vision of what an entry level college English class would actually look like. I had assumed preparation for college level writing meant getting a refresher on mechanics and structuring a paper correctly, I have not been to school in forty years so this made sense in my mind. I had no idea how to respond, although I had read the text and syllabus I did not understand what was really being ask of us and what it had to do with writing itself, therefore I was unable to make an immediate connection to the relevance of assignments like this to my life situation. Understanding how I can use something
My English 908 class almost comes to a close, and now it’s time for me to think “what I have learned in this class?” Reflecting on the past two months, I notice that this class has offered me the ability to aware of my personal strengths as well as weaknesses and also provided me methods to strengthen them. In addition, because of the huge amount of journal entries that we need to write week after week, both of my attitude toward writing and my point of view of studying and daily life aspects have matured. Now, I enjoy writing compositions and expect a higher quality of my work. Moreover, the quizzes helped me understand how to use comma, articles, and transitions properly so that I can transform my mediocre work into a well-composed essay. Therefore, knowing how to become a more effective writer is the most important benefits of attending this class.
