English 101 might seem like an easy course to take for some students. For other students such as myself, English 101 was one of the classes I feared and procrastinated on taking. Coming from an ESL background, English was the class I have always struggled with the most. I’ve always excelled in science/ mathematics courses. I prefer the correct answers to be facts and universal. Creativity is not my forte. The process of putting my thoughts down on paper in an organized manner, with correct punctuation, and citing works used, seemed like a complicated, tedious task before taking English 101 this summer.
Taking a look back at my past writing assignments and drafts for each one, I can clearly see the improvement in how they are organized. My first draft for writing assignment 1 was basically one long paragraph. I clearly remember Mr. Bogdaniec’s advice on how to separate and create individual paragraphs that only contain one topic or main idea. Also with his handouts on writing an introductory paragraph and how to write the conclusion paragraph were extremely helpful in putting together my first writing assignment in this class. I followed the steps on brainstorming and then steps for creating a plot, and didn’t feel overwhelmed and confused as I had

Bogdaniec’s teachings and instructions was punctuation, specifically commas. I was one of those people under the wrong assumption that commas were placed whenever there was a pause in a sentence or you are listing off multiple items, adjectives or verbs. Obviously I was wrong. In writing assignment 2 I had a few mistakes where I forgot to use correct punctuation. After reviewing Mr. Bogdanic’s remarks on assignment 2, I was able to go back and correct my punctuation mistakes and receive a grade of 105 out of 100 points for my revision. I finally understood why we use commas, and the importance of placing them in the correct location of a
English has never been an easy subject for me. It is something that I've needed to work at constantly in order to achieve a grade that I am satisfied by or more likely, my parents are satisfied by. Throughout high school I have been a person who is naturally gifted in mathematics, physics and chemistry. These subjects are straightforward to me because I knew if I worked harder I would obtain a higher grade, but with English it always seemed that even if I put in more effort it wasn't a given that I’d see better results.
I recently completed an anatomy class, and the professor posed a question to us. He said something along the lines of, "The controller of the entire body, its functions, its thoughts, its nerves, of everything, is the brain. How can we be sure all of that is true? That's simply what the brain is telling us is true." So what does it really mean to be human? Is there a correct answer, or are there wrong answers? Is everything that you personally believe correct because there is no definite answer to this perplexing question?
Coming into junior year and taking an AP English class, I am extremely nervous. Outside of English, I am taking two other AP classes, so I am worried about the work load that I will be responsible for throughout the year. I have heard from my older sister that AP English is a fun, great class. Throughout my eleven years of school, I have always been one to challenge myself and I fell that by taking AP English I will be challenging myself once again. I am looking forward to a good year this year.
In the words of Samuel Adams, “It does not take a majority to prevail but rather a tireless, irate minority, keen to set brush fires in the people’s minds.” I do agree to the statement that it takes a minority to make the people realize what changes must be brought but I do not confirm to the views that it does not take a majority to prevail. According to me most process to start changes are started by a small group of people but if the group does not enjoy the support of the majority, the revolution is doomed for failure. In my opinion, it is not feasible for a minority to go against the wishes of the larger group and bring a

Give praise with psalms that tell the trees to sing, Give praise with Gospel choirs in storefront churches, Mad with the joy of the Sabbath, Give praise with the babble of infants, who wake with the sun, Give praise with children chanting their skip-rope rhymes, A poetry not in books, a vagrant mischievous poetry living wild on the Streets through generations of children. Give praise with the sound of the milk-train far away With its mutter of wheels and long-drawn-out sweet whistle As it speeds through the fields of sleep at three in the morning, Give praise with the immense and peaceful sigh Of the wind in the pinewoods, At night give praise with starry silences. Give praise with the skirling of seagulls
If utilized properly and effectively, these techniques could exponentially help students in not only their English 101 class, but with every single other class they take from then on. Having students be able to understand topics and ideas as well as the techniques used to help decipher them is a very handy and versatile tool. In the end Beaufort concluded that “Transfer of learning cannot happen without reflection.” (Beaufort 38) Reflections are often are overlooked within classes, which is a huge mistake because they help students better grasp concepts and ideas. If reflections were incorporated earlier within a student's career especially during the critical times of freshman year English courses, there wouldn’t be problems with transfer
Throughout this course, I have had to write a number of essays using a variety of techniques. The concept and cause and effect essays are the two main papers I will use to make an evaluative analysis of the outcomes I have learned, utilizing the writing process in Basic Writing I, with expectations of receiving the grade of at least a “B” on my portfolio. This course helped me realize the many steps that are involved in the writing process from gathering ideas to making a final copy. In order to create a good paper you need to organize your ideas. However, I find it tedious to have to connect those ideas; yet, I want my paper to be cohesive and organized.
Throughout my life, my mom has always told me to create an outline as a way to organize my thoughts. Although I do outline before every paper, sometimes I find it difficult. Coming up with all of my ideas I want to focus on can be stressful especially when it is a difficult topic. Possibly instead of always outlining I would be interested in grouping my notes. This is one strategy that is mentioned in this book. As a student that enjoys making note cards, this could possibly be more effective. It allows you to make different piles and separate your notecards accordingly. This is definitely a way to gather my ideas in a more organized manner. Another negative challenge to my writing is the beginning of my writing process. Although I might have my outline all written out, I struggle with starting out my essay. I would not consider myself an academic writer, so sometimes I have to really think about sentences for a long period of time before writing them down. I believe creating an essay blueprint will be a good way to assemble parts of an essay. Figure 10 in the book is a good example of a blueprint. It is a different type of outline, however, could provide assistance during the essay process. There would be a chart and each paragraph would have its own
When second semester comes, being an easy-go-lucky student is not allowed anymore. Simply because I already learned from my past semester its effect and I really dont like it. Right now, Im going to focus and do my best to pass all the requirements on time. As much as possible, I will manage my time better than before to be more effective. Second semester is another level so I need to study harder and make the most out of it.
The Shrewsbury Public School system is one that is filled with diversity and staffed with a team of educators who are ready to meet the diverse needs of their student body. Language arts will help me in many ways when I want to stand out in my career. It will first make an appearance when I go to apply to a job. It will better my chances of getting the job over others if I have good language arts skills. Someone who has good grammar, knows how to document things, and can write a resume will stand out over someone who does not have good grammar skills. Also, by being able to document things in a good writing manner, I will excel in the career I want to be in. As a physical therapist, you have to be able to document how your patient is doing, what their patient is doing, and make side notes so that the doctor can keep up with the patient even though they do not see them as often as you. When documenting you should
It’s saddening to see every year; the generations tend to seem more unintelligent. What could the factor be? Is it how the parents raised their children, a learning disability, or maybe even them not wanting to learn? However, came to a conclusion that each year our literacy becomes worse due to social media. The most used application used today is Twitter. It’s almost at a point where the future generation might be in danger. Now not all of the future generation is in danger. There will be people that teach how social media could be wrong, and give an idea on how to write in “Perfect English”. Twitter is affecting people with their spelling and language literacy for users in everyday life.
Language arts skills has always been one of my favorite studies in school. By having good language art skills it lets people hear and know you know what you're talking about. Having language art skills will help me write in a way that will be legible and make sense. One way it will help me reach my career goal as a medical assistant is it will help me communicate with my future employer to make them aware that I have the education they are looking for. It will also help me with my note taking skills, that way I can study and learn what I need to know.
