Engaged Reading Outline
Thesis: Reading engagement in college students is known to be poor, however researcher have developed a virtual environment in which college students take on the role of tutor and teach a virtual tutee, the virtual tutee system (VTS).
I. Introduction: The virtual tutee system is a web-based tutoring environment in which students teach a virtual character about the course materials they have been assigned to read. VTS can help in developing high-levels of reading strategies, increase reading motivation and reading engagement. The VTS is designed to enable student to experience deep engagement in reading and broad understanding of the content.
II. The purpose of the article is to introduce and examine a web-based tutoring
This essay will examine all nine readings. There will also be insight given to why the United States entered World War I, and whether or not the reasons were persuasive. Other things will also be discussed, including: what America’s war aims were, and how Wilson’s goals were unrealistic, misleading, overly idealistic and moralistic. The fact that Wilson expected too much of international law and international organization. Also, why Wilson’s goals were not achieved. That the national interest is what should guide American diplomacy. There was also a lot of questions of loyalty and civil liberties that were raised by the war.
During web based instructional design (WBID) and development, formative evaluation will occur from school experts including the schools technology manager, assistant principal of curriculum, and the business department chair. They will review the materials presented in the WBI (web based instruction) elements for design, content, graphics, structure, message, and technical specifications. Formative of the final WBI prototype will take place as a small group of students (one section) field test the WBI over a term. Test and assignment scores, student participation, surveys, and discussions with students will assist with determining the relative successes and failures of the program as well as areas that need improvement.
Rejected, by Don Hertzfeldt, is a short animation of cartoon ads that were rejected, which leads to Hertzfeldt to lose his mind. The animation includes series of disturbing scenes that seem to be unrelated. A deeper analysis of the film, Hertzfeldt incorporates hidden meanings and symbols into the advertisements presented. At first, I was confused about the significance of the animation, but the concepts we discussed in class about the scene of the banana and silly hats opened up a new perspective on how to critically analyze this new medium.
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a truly interesting novel because of the relationship between the main character Amir and his Hazara servant/friend Hassan and in the book the driving force behind the plot is Hassan standing up for Amir. It is the reason Baba is dissatisfied with Amir as a son, the reason Hassan eventually leaves Amir’s life as well as the reason Amir returns to his war torn homeland in Afghanistan. Therefore for my visual I chose to depict the confrontation with Assef, the first time the reader is shown an example of Hassan standing up for Amir. However, as I continued planning out my drawing I changed my original design from a depiction of one scene to a general depiction of the theme of Hassan standing up for Amir.
Overall, SUB8 has created a well designed, developed product of instruction for online learning. The overall look and feel of the website is very sleek and the learner is able to navigate very easily through the website. SUB8 utilized a website as her primary delivery platform where she created instructional material that then could be launched from her website. The instructional material was to teach about the technology platform called Coggle. SUB8 learning objectives are clear and presented on the first page, but the ability to gauge or observe the objectives may be difficult for some of the listed objectives.

A growing body of researchers claim that if students are not motivated and engaged in reading, they will not achieve their full literacy potential (Gambrell, 2011; Serravallo 2015; Warner, 2014; Irvin et al., 2007; Parsons et al., 2015). How and why would they read a “broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging” texts if they are not interested? Research now shows that engagement and reading achievement actually have a symbiotic relationship, such that they must exist simultaneously (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000, as cited in Springer, Harris, & Dole, 2017). As students become more engaged in reading, they develop an increased level of competence, which supports their literacy achievement (Irvin et al., 2007; Springer, Harris, & Dole, 2017). As students’ reading abilities increase, they hold a greater desire to continue reading, along

In the past, knowing that motivation was one of the primary concerns for teachers when teaching them to read (Veenamn, 1984) but today it deals more with finding a way to interest students in reading (O’Flahavan, Gambrell, Guthrie, Stahl, & Alvermann, 1992), Gambrell, Palmer, Codling, & Mazzoni developed a tool to assess student motivation in reading. The Motivation to Read Profile includes a reading survey and a conversational interview. The survey gathers information on reading motivation as it relates to self-concept as a reader and the value of reading. The interview gathers information on books students find most interesting, favorite authors, and where and how students find books. After administering the survey and interview, teachers
Looking through the history and development of human beings when people face problems, they would like to solve them. The use of webquest in the classroom is a tool that every teacher should incorporate in their classroom. Not only is this a new way to teach our future students but it is also an alternative from traditional teaching. Using webquest in the classrooms gives students a boost of motivation, this means that they will be more likely to put forth more effort than what they normally would. Although with using webquest in the classrooms comes with a wide range of benefits, as well as some quite substantial downfalls.
The Harry Potter series relates to children and all types of readers, inviting them into the new and different world. The Harry Potter world however parallels the real world much more than many initially think. Students who relate to the world of Harry Potter and have grown up hearing his name along with other favorite characters engage in the story more than with any generic story often used in classrooms. The Harry Potter series engages the students and encourages learning through a subject in which the students have found interest. Keith McPherson in his article “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Motivation” from the journal Teacher Librarian discusses the importance of an engaged child while they read,“Reading-related research finds that reading motivation increases when students are actively engaged with real-world reading materials in real-world interactions (qtd. Brophy, 1998; Csikszentmihalyi, 1991; Yair, 2000).” Children who enjoy the stories they read, develop greater reading comprehension skills and have greater motivation to continue reading and learning. A student who also relates to the characters he or she reads about will discover a connection to reading that only improves the child’s desire to read.
Udio allows for the adaptability of technology, thereby providing students with supports that typical text lacks. The flexibility then contributes to students spending less time attempting to decode words and students being able to remain engaged in the text (Dalton & Proctor, 2007). These opportunities can support reading motivation and competence in a diverse range of learners. It offers students the opportunity to read text regardless of their reading aptitude consequently, allowing students to also to understand what they read. The use of tools/features in Udio help maintain the interest and motivation in students while they complete reading tasks, thus, Udio closes the gap for struggling readers at the middle school level by addressing the literacy demands and nation-wide challenges (Carnegie Corporation’s Council on Advancing Adolescent Literacy,
This project endeavours to identify the meaning of engagement for students, and why students in a Grade 10 English IGCSE class seem to lack or exhibit little engagement. Data were obtained from conducting a focus group, and through consultation with peers and a critical friend. In addition, there are further plans to conduct more focus groups, as well as, to conduct interviews with students, teachers and parents, when further research is conducted. The report concludes that…
