When we started our research project, I had tons and tons of ideas of what I could research. All these ideas were like new tabs opening and exploding in my brain, then it came to me, Energy Drinks. My parents very rarely let me have a Red Bull or a Monster Energy, and I hoped that by researching more about the drink, I would find the answer to why they have restricted this drink from me. On the first day of research, I only knew three things, 1: they are bad for your health 2: they have high amounts of caffeine and 3: they are packed with sugar. Most people already know these things about energy drinks, but I wanted to go a step further and find out what really happens when you take a sip of Red Bull. By choosing this topic, I hoped to …show more content…
Caffeine boosts your mood and your alertness making you more awake and on top of your tasks, this is because caffeine makes more adenosine in the brain, which makes the body more alert. Too much caffeine though and it will mess with your emotions. The reason for this is caffeine makes the body more “pumped up” which creates more adrenaline, but there is no use for this adrenaline. The result is moods swings. The more caffeine you have, the more your body wants, leading to addiction of the drink. You can feel the affects of drinking an energy drink almost simultaneously! One drink will increase your blood pressure remarkably. If you are someone who drinks energy drinks a lot, you are at risk of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and the collapse of any vital organ down the road. Another long term effect on the body is type two diabetes, this is because there is so much caffeine intake, the body's response to meaning insulin slows down and allows the caffeine to “take …show more content…
By researching, I am now aware of what the short term and long term effects of consumption of caffeine. I had hoped to research more on the ingredients but I found the main ingredients and looked more into the effects the give off. What can we do to help stop the bad effects that energy drinks have on us? We could petition to the stores and have them cut back on their sales, talk to the company's and the government and have them remove the labeling that is targeted at kids. The last thing we can do is educate everyone around on on just how bad energy drinks are. This information is very helpful to me because it will help me make better decisions the next time I want an energy drink. Together, we can make a
About 80% of American adults consume 200 mg of caffeine a day. “A 12-oz. (tall) coffee from Starbucks will run you about 260 mg, while a 14-oz. Dunkin’ Donuts coffee contains 178 mg.” The daily intake of caffeine differed between products; one should always check the amount before consumption. There are no limits on how many energy drinks a person can purchase, which make it easy to abuse. Especially in younger children the addiction rate outstandingly high. Which may lead to other drug usage in the future and the committal dependence on stronger drugs.
The product in the health and fitness industry that we are proposing for research includes a variety of energy drinks with high concentrations of caffeine, from products such as Gatorade, Red Bull, Monster, etc. Targeted users for this product include amateur and professional athletes, young adults between the ages of 16-25, and other individuals who would be considered a "workaholic" or "busy person." The main reason why athletes consume energy drinks is because they increase focus, improve performance, vitalize the body, mind, and satisfy consumers’ needs for quality tasting, healthy, natural and functional beverages. My health claim is that while caffeine and sugar have some benefits like increasing the attention and alertness of athletes,
Caffeine is a psychoactive drug and potentially deadly in large amounts, especially for adolescents (Hershorin, Lipschulz, Schaechter & Seifert, 2011). Caffeine is one the most common energy drink ingredients and one of the most widely consumed substances in the world. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), caffeine is a chemical stimulant compound found in various plants that acts as a central nervous system stimulant. Caffeine is produced naturally and artificially. Caffeine is found mainly in coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, energy drinks and some over-the-counter medications. Due to the increasing demands placed on teenagers today, caffeine is becoming more prevalent in adolescents. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children have no more than 100 mg of caffeine a day due to unknown medical conditions, the fact a teenager’s brain is still in a developmental stage, and the importance sleep plays in the developing brain. Table 1, shows the amount of caffeine for the energy drinks in this report. (Note-this does not include the caffeine from blend ingredients)
Besides the obvious and immediate effects of drinks containing high amounts of caffeine there are a few long-term benefits worth mentioning. Depression is a horrible condition that slowly eats away at a person until there is nothing left of them. Coffee has been shown to fight depression ("Does Caffeine Reduce the Risk of Depression?). By drinking a few cups of coffee or one can of an energy drink chances of depression

C. Thesis and Preview: Today I’d like to talk to you about first, how energy drinks are bad for you, second, why it affects you, and finally, what makes them bad for you.
This excerpt talks about how many substances in energy drinks are useless. This excerpt also talks about how energy drink companies say that their drinks will give you a mental and physical edge, however there is little to no proof supporting that claim. In fact many things in those drinks do nothing to benefit the body and can even hurt your body in the long term. For example some of these substances may include Glucuronolactone, B-group vitamins, and Taurine. I agree with this excerpt and think that the author successfully supports the claim made in the title.
Energy drinks are a kind of refreshments that are advertised as soft drinks that boost energy. The truth is these kinds of drinks are full of many harmful ingredients, such as sugar, stimulants, and other herbal supplements. Energy drinks are targeting high school and college students who may use this kind of drink to keep them awake for a midterm, or even give them a hallucination feeling any other alcoholic beverages will do. Also, what are the health risks of drinking energy drinks? One risk of drinking energy drinks can be having heart disease later in life. Energy drinks can cause many problems to the heart, heart attacks and strokes has been the result of energy drinks. This especially troubling for young people that don’t have the tolerance like the older people who has drank more caffeine in there
There are three main reasons energy drinks have bad effects the body. One reason why energy drinks are bad is because can increase the risk to get heart problems. Caffeine is the most common ingredient found in a majority of energy drinks; symptoms of caffeine include increasing respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure. These effects are present when consuming caffeine. If someone has heavy stress, anxiety, blood clot disorders, or heart problems severe symptoms can include cardiac arrest, stroke, heart attack, and death. In addition, Fiona Macrae presented a study done from university students about Red Bull’s sugar free energy drink and she revealed that it “ increased the ‘stickiness’ of the blood and raised the risk of life- threatening clots”(Par.2) . The Second reason is because it can cause energy crashes. If people thought energy drinks created a permanent source of energy, Mandy Rath states that “increase in blood sugar levels and gives a temporary boost in energy.
Sylvia Nena (2011) also stated that “Manufactures of these products claim to increase energy, endurance, burn fat and improve athletic performance. According to experts, many of them state that it is untrue that energy drink helps to increase energy. This is due to drugs that can be found in the drinks such as caffeine. Caffeine with high levels of consuming can cause some problems to the human body like palpitations, hypertension, vomiting, convulsions and even worst heart failure which can lead to death. Roland Griffiths (2012) a caffeine specialist said that high caffeine in use by young people can cause a cycle of rushes and crashes that can add “a degree of variance to their moods and psychological well-being that they don’t really need. Joao Breda(2014) from WHO’s Europe wrote that caffeine has a proven negative effect on
