Throughout the years people have been given the privilege of interpersonal communication in many forms, such as letters, emails, texts, and social media. Letters were one of the very first mediums people used to communicate, and as the years went by technology improved, and emails were created. Emails served as a faster alternative for people in a business to contact someone else. Following that was the idea of text messaging, not only was it time efficient but also easier. That wasn’t the only thing connecting people all around the world though. Office management has changed to run parallel to that of the internet. The speed of business is now akin to the internet, asking for efficiency, which by and large is not a bad thing. However, it is the way that efficiency is being attained, by the subjugation of human contact. Emails are the preferred form of communication now. Office managers often cite they are too busy to have a face to face with a coworker.

These days, we all have cell phones and email accounts so that we can be connected from anywhere to all around worlds. Some people can think that it is a great tool to communicate with others and save their time. However, it also can be annoying to some people who prefer traditional communication ways like face-to-face and letter. Anyone can have any opinion about this kind of new communication way. However, there are two articles which have totally different ideas from each other. The first article, by Robert Kuttner, can represent people who prefer the old way to using new technology and the second article, by Jesse Brown, can represent people who are at the opposite side. To some extent, they both suggest reasonable arguments, but the more we consider about and focus on our daily life and convenience, the more persuasive Jesse Brown’s article seems. There are some reasons of it based on their arguments.

Communication skills are important to any organization and employees are expected to be professional and be able to express their ideas and opinions in that manner. Good communication skills are not limited to one area, to be an effective communicator you must be a good listener, be able to read body language as well as express your ideas verbally and in written form. Employees older the age of 40, have not grown up with the technology that we have today and have relied more on hand written, typed, face to face and verbal communication in a way much different than today. Because staff members over the age of 40 have spent their careers in a more formal work environment, the communication that they prefer tends to be more formal as well. With the advent of computers and related technologies of communication, the nature of communication has changed drastically. There are some positive highlights to this change as well as negative highlights to this change based on my experience. In my younger years, the only form of communication was one on one communication or writing through snail mail. However, this is not the case today.
