One Determined Team The Elk Mound Football team may have had a rough start to the season, but if you look at the spot they are sitting now you might have thought the beginning games were played by a different team. The Mounders are 5-0 in conference games and 6-2 overall. This week they face the undefeated Spring Valley Cardinals. This means that both of these teams will be playing for the Dunn- St. Croix Conference Championship. The game will be held at Elk Mound and will also be senior night. The team has 12 seniors who will be playing. The Mounders faced two very good opponents in the first two games. They played Chetek-Weyerhaeuser and St. Croix Central. The St. Croix Central team was the defending state champion for division 4(Elk Mound
Lane Spotted Elk is a Montana State University student from the tribe Northern Cheyenne/Crow. Lane has a strong social side of the health triangle. Black Elk explains the Lakota ideology and what it means to be native. Black Elk falls very ill. While ill, Black Elk has a vision known as “The Great Vision”(Neihardt 17 footnote 1). The Wasichus, a name for white people, start building the iron road, and the start of treaties being made. “Wherever we went the soldiers came to kill us”(Neihardt pg 105), this quote was spoken by Black Elk at the beginning of destruction of the Lakota Nation. Black Elk and his tribe leave for Grandmother’s land (Canada). While in Canada, the Lakota perform the Horse Dance. Cuts-to-pieces’ son was the first human to be healed by Black Elk, and after this miraculous deed happens his tribe performs the Heyoka ceremony. After the Heyoka ceremony, Black Elk performs the final part of his Great Vision. Black Elk travels over the big water and when Black Elk recovers from being sick, he then returns home to find his people dying from starvation and sickness. The messiah is introduced, and rumors are spreading that this man promises a new “better” world is coming, where all their loved-ones are alive and buffalo still roam. Historically known as the Massacre of Wounded Knee, Wasichus came into the native camp, at this time there were so few native tribes left that multiple tribes banded together and slaughter men women and children. This is when the Lakota Nation has one final battle against the U.S. Army. “Brothers, this is a very hard winter. The women and children are starving and
A little background I found on the author, John G. Neihardt, was that when he was little he moved around in the west a lot. While he was travelling in the west, after meeting his wife, he ran into Nicholas Black Elk, the Ogalala holy man, and would bring his visions to the world. The original book was published in 1932, and sold millions all over the world. The idea of the book was to recognize that not all Native Americans are going to kill you, and that it could introduce the idea of dreams with perceptive understandings. Standing Bear was in the room where the writing was taking place as a witness to tell that everything was true. While Neihardt was writing the book him and Black Elk became incredible friends and their friendship lasted
Banner Elk, North Carolina, is not only nestled in the heart of the Appalachian mountains, but has been implanted into my heart and soul from an early age. From the surface, it is home to a little over 1,000 people, a small college, and a couple ski resorts, but to me it has much more to offer. A plethora of memories originate from experiences I have had there, which have cumulatively molded me into the young man I betray today.

The Aggie experience must be experienced: feeling fellow Aggies tugging you side to side as you sing “saw Varsity’s horns off’, hearing roar of the crowd and the boom of the cannon whenever the Aggies score, following the corp members down Military Walk as they carry the Yell Leaders the Fish Pond. Finally, the experience is topped off with the hysteria of finding a seat at Layne's afterwards to eat, making sure to tuck your ticket stub away for
On that first Saturday in June 2012, my teammates and I fulfilled our life-long goals of winning a state championship together and proving to the people that did not believe in us that we could do it. On that day, those fifteen guys I had grown up through grade school with were no longer just teammates and friends, they became brothers to me. Another reason Huntington Park is so special to me is because I was the final pitcher in both championships, meaning I had the ball in my hand when the game was on the line. Standing on the mound in front of ten thousand people with all eyes looking at you is a nerve racking feeling but there was no better feeling then being the guy that our coach trusted to bring home the trophy for our team. Lastly, this baseball stadium known as Huntington Park is so special to me because after receiving that trophy and medal for winning the championship I also received my high school diploma at home plate because our team missed the graduation ceremony. There are not many people in the world that can say they received their high school diploma on the same field they won a state championship. Huntington Park may not be a special place for anyone else but it will always be a special place for my teammates and myself. Those two days our dreams became realities and that is something we will all look back and cherish forever. Whether it’s passing by the stadium in my car or attending a Columbus Clippers game during the summer time, any time I find myself back at Huntington Park I still get the chills from knowing I played on that
With the hopes that it wouldn't snow, I traveled to Silverton Colorado with my dad in October. My dad and I had six elk tags for the very first rifle season. We pulled our camp trailer down to a nice wooded area about five miles before you get into town. The camp sight was about a quarter mile off of the highway. There were trees all around the camping spot; the only break in the trees was where the road came through.
Allusions to well known characters are often found in artistic expression to describe universal traits. These implicit references, often Biblical, Shakespearean, or Greek, rely on the viewers’ previous knowledge to understand the main theme of a piece. Allusions are able to convey underlying messages in a more relatable manner because of shared classical ideas. One popular Biblical reference, that of Judas, one of the original twelve apostles of Jesus, signifies betrayal and greed in a friend. Whether 700 years ago or 70 years ago, this allusion can be seen in both literature and art alike in the role of a traitor to the protagonist.
In between 1983 and 1993, there were 667 murder convictions in the city of Philadelphia. Out of the total 667 convictions 115, or 17.24%, were convicted to the death penalty. According to the study The Death Penalty in Black and White, is the justice system blind to race?
The “Renaissance man” was a term coined during the High Renaissance which referred to a man whose talents expanded into many areas. Leonardo da Vinci was such a man, however, his greatest talent resided in his ability to seamlessly use one talent to improve his skill in that of others.
With that being said, we are looking forward to the first team get-together this Thursday, August 17th, 6pm at Diamond Hill Field. We understand it is very short notice, but with Opening Day scheduled for August 26th it does not give too many opportunities to get the team together before that first game and we believe this will be a great opportunity for the team to get to meet/know each other, and for the parents to do the same! We believe that the more the team gets to know each other, the better they will play together :) We
