The novel I chose to read over the summer was Catch-22, by Joseph Heller. I chose this novel because it came highly recommended by my 9th grade English teacher, Ms. Moore. I also knew it was one of the most significant novels of the 20th century, and I was interested to see what it was about. The novel I chose was The Notorious Benedict Arnold. I honestly chose this novel because I thought that the cover looked really cool, and I was interested in learning about Benedict Arnold. Since I hadn't really learned about him in my history classes. This book follows the adventures of Benedict Arnold and John André through the war. The author explains how Benedict Arnold, for a long time, was a loved and praised general/commander. Soon enough, though, he started to gain enemies from his own country, including Congress. After some time of abuse, Benedict Arnold finally turned to treachory. He contacted André and they worked out the specifics. The House of Evil is a heavy narration of persistent torture, hunger, and killing of an innocent fifteen year old girl named Sylvia Linken. It leaves the reader speechless as to know that humans can have an evil nature and mind, knowing destruction as a source of fun, using words like “sex party,” playing abomination acts like forcing a Pepsi bottle into a vagina, blaming her for a pregnancy that did not exist, acting deaf and blind to the excruciating pain of the sufferer and not knowing what the sufferer is going through. Sylvia Linken’s murder is to some extent a mystery as to understand psychology of the persecutors and the persecuted Sylvia. Interestingly, the members of a church, namely Gertrude Baniszewski, Richard Hobbs are a source of pain and destruction to another member, Sylvia and are not
