Elizabeth Bowen was born June 7, 1899 in Dublin, Ireland, and died of lung cancer February 22, 1973. After the death of her mother when she was thirteen she moved to London. In 1918-1919 she attended London council school of art, and she started writing at the age of 20. She was the most well-known writer in her time period, and was known all over the world for her stories and novels. By 1948 she received a doctor of letters from Trinity College and was made commander of the order of the British Empire. Bowen published many different types of writing styles for the British broadcasting center. She was an air raid warden for London during World War II. After experiencing the blitz and bombing of London by the Germans this gave her the inspiration to write “The Demon Lover”. In “The Demon Lover,” Elizabeth Bowen shows the challenges families faced from lost and injured loved ones through characterization and trauma, much like people experienced in the war. American poet and short story writer Elizabeth Bishop lived between February 8, 1911- October 6, 1979. She won many awards such as The Pulitzer Prize, The National Book award, and The Neustadt International Prize for literature in 1976. Bishop was said to work obsessively on her poems and would spend years perfecting them.
