Maria was in the third grade and the bell rang to dismiss all of the third graders to their next class. Maria gathered all of her belongings and headed to her next class. As she was walking, she felt like she was in the eighth grade because she got to switch classes, just like the eighth graders do. Some elementary children get to switch classes, as young as they are. Those children learn early on, on how a middle school or high school works. As a student, I believe that elementary students should begin to switch classes at a young age. In schools that switch, teachers play a big part in making sure kids learn each subject. Teachers have the opportunity to focus on just on one subject, rather than all of the subjects. In Source 2, “When a teacher teaches the same lesson throughout the day, he or she can ensure that students fully understand the material. The lesson may be of higher quality since the teacher only has to prepare one outstanding lesson to teach several times each day”(Source 2). This is because teachers have more time to really explain this one subject to all of the students. When there is an extraordinary interest, there is a strong heart to go through plenty of tough matters. Provided with the proper courses, there is no doubt that the talent of the students will be explored thoroughly. Fewer electives will be able to take place such as music, and internship programs which future ready students for the future and opens their eyes to possible future careers. Along with all these changes, class sizes will increase. By a larger class size, teachers will not be able to focus on students as much individually causing students to gain a lack of care towards the class, and “cooperative learning and other more complex activities” will not be able to be done due to the fact with a large class size it is “just too difficult to manage” (Kelly). With the activities being decreased students may not be as attentive to their academics, drop out, or not even put thought into college. Many older and smaller schools have been forced to close down and join into a different newer and bigger school. This transition has put teachers out of jobs, and affect students by moving “to an unfamiliar setting [which] can be both mentally and emotionally draining” (Kelly). Teachers whose jobs are taken, or have decided to move to a different profession because of the lack of security for their job are majorly being affected, and also causing more job competition for others while applying for other jobs. The teaching profession is not one to rush into, with the uncertainty of where you may end up and the effect it may have on students.
Many people endure three years of middle school and four years of high school. It is an eventful time for children between 11 to 18 years old. During the adolescent years there are hormonal changes, environmental changes and emotional developmental gains. Middle school is the beginning of transitioning towards independence under the constant eye of adults. During high school they are challenged with real-world challenges that help them transition into adulthood. The behaviors of these individuals change as the factors change around them. For every person, the experience of high school or middle school may be different. Either way, both have the same goal of wanting the student to succeed and evolve. Even so, the similarities and differences vary. Middle school and high school are alike in the areas of receiving an education, socializing with others, and having teachers while different in areas of maturity, difficulty in work, and independence.
This shows that year-round school is at least as good as the traditional schedule in helping students learn. Year-round school also allows more time for remedial classes during the breaks, which can help students who are falling behind during the school year catch back up. This is in contrast with summer school, which only occurs after school is over and students are finished with the curriculum, making students have to start a totally new class just to catch up. Remedial classes reinforce material that is fresh in students’ minds instead of forcing them to recall something they may have learned half a year ago and probably forgotten. This once again cuts down on the time it takes to bring students up to speed with their classes.
