Effects Of Societal Alienation In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the falling actions of tragic events demonstrate the danger of societal alienation. The problem of feeling different from society or alienating someone may have consequences, some more severe than others. Steinbeck gives great compassion for his characters by portraying them as misfits in society because of their physical or mental limitations. Throughout the novella, characters have been excluded from certain events, in other words they have been alienated from society for a variety range of reasons.
Curley's wife is faced with the brutal and unfair way reality reminds her that she is estranged from everyone else. In the barn she confides to Lennie revealing “Could have been in the movies and had nice clothes. All of them nice clothes that they wear.” For Curley's wife the stage and fame symbolizes the attention and beauty that are not present to her on the ranch. The annoyance and isolation she experiences directs her to her dangerous flirtatiousness. She then mentions “I coulda sat in them big hotels and had pictures took of me.” She reveals the attention she wishes she could of have. Any attention she does receive at the farm, feels like isolation to her.

Crooks explains “A guy needs somebody to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long he's with you.” It's seems as if Crooks is worried that he’ll go crazy if he has no one to talk to as a friend. He feels isolated from everyone else and blames it on his race and skin color. He’s later questioned why he doesn't join the rest of the guys and he points out “Cause I’m black. They play card in there, but I can’t play because I’m black.” The workers on the ranch exclude him from certain events because of his skin color.
