All Alone: Loneliness in Of Mice and Men
In a society of people all in the same situations how can someone feel so alone. When lives fall apart and people have nothing to hold on to people need each other most, yet are pushed so far from others. The novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, follows the storyline of two men who are displaced farm workers during the Great Depression; they travel around and stick by each other’s sides no matter the circumstance. After many jobs they end up on a farm, the farm they hope will be their last stop. The time spent on the farm is filled with blooming friendships and careless quarrels, yet with an abundance of characters and entertainment- many people on the farm feel alone and out of place. Characters such as Crooks and Curley’s wife often come to mind when the subject of loneliness is brought up. Throughout the book using characters such as Crooks and Curley's wife, John Steinbeck demonstrates that humans are immensely impacted by separation from society and it will change the way that people will act and show themselves to others. Loneliness and exclusion from society hurts and affects everyone; the emotional strain a person endures from it creates the image they present to others, but deep down they are not the display image they manufacture. As an illustration, while opening up to Lennie in the barn Curley’s wife states, “I get lonely… You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad.
The first example of loneliness is Crooks. This is first shown when Lennie walks into his room for the first time to be greeted with Crooks telling him that he doesn’t have any right to be in his room. This shows the fact that Crooks is so alone he doesn’t even want to talk to anyone. It also shows that he has been isolated and outcast completely from the rest of the farm workers he doesn’t even try to make friends anymore. Crooks once again shows his descent into isolation
All of the characters in Of Mice and Men have experienced loneliness and isolation. George desires a friendship but he cannot have one because he has to take care of Lennie. Curley’s wife wants to have someone to devote her attention to. Candy is an old man with a dog but not very many friends. All three of these characters are in need of a friend.
Of Mice and Men’ is written by John Steinbeck. The novel is set in the 1930s during the great depression in California, America. Loneliness is the consistent theme running through the novel, relating as it does to the other themes namely: broken dreams and prejudice. Steinbeck illustrates through Curley's wife, Candy, and Crooks, three main characters of the novel the great negative effect of loneliness on humans. All the characters encounter and face problems and negative feelings due to their deep loneliness and isolation. This is counterbalanced very cleverly through the friendships between George and Lennie, two main characters in the novel.
Loneliness is defined as a feeling of sadness because one has no friends or company. Different people view loneliness in different ways; Crooks, George, and Curley’s wife all experience loneliness in the novel. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is considered one of his best and finest novels of all times. The novel is about two ranch workers, Lennie Small and George Milton, who travel around searching for jobs during the 1930’s. Our main characters go through major conflicts, especially Lennie, who apparently suffers from some kind of mental illness, and at the same time, George gets dragged down because of the problems Lennie causes along the way. Many of Steinbeck’s novels dealt with social issues, especially Of Mice and Men, which dealt with racism, isolation, poverty and loneliness. Loneliness has been developed throughout the entire novel, and the way the author displayed this social issues is through characterization techniques. To show us that we, as humans, fear loneliness in order to survive, or in order to feel “alive”.

It might be hard to name someone more lonely than Michael from The Blind Side, but Lennie and George from Of Mice And Men are lonely in a different way. Lennie and George are lonely even though they have each other. Lennie and George in my opinion are not as lonely as Michael because they have each other but they still are alone all together.
The film’s gorgeous visual presentation allows it to communicate the theme of loneliness in a superior fashion. Throughout the film, many fantastic uses of imagery deeply emphasizes the lonesomeness of the story. A great example of this is shown during the scene where Candy mourns his dead dog. Here, the entire shot of the farmland is tinted gray, with the sky being cloudy, and the trees and grass fields appearing dull. Candy is seen to be standing alone on the empty field while the other ranch hands left for work. He solemnly takes off his hat in respect for his old friend’s passing, and turns to face away from the audience (Sinise). The imagery presented in this scene greatly articulates the deep emotional desolation Candy is experiencing,
Why does bad things happen to good people it's really unfair like what have they done to ever get that kind of treatment. How could that affect them how would it affect someone else like in the story of mice and men the mood of loneliness isn't far from that book a lot of the book sets it for the mood. The loneliness in curly wife made her turn to Linnie which led to both of their deaths.thatv Most people think she's not a cheater but from my perspective it seems that she's so lonely she would cheat. Her leading to cheating lead to Linnie's death. which has George lonely after and he doesn't know what to do after the fact

The author, John Steinbeck, is famous for pieces including The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck was born February 27, 1902, and unfortunately passed away on December 20, 1968, at 66 years old. Of Mice and Men is set in the time period of The Great Depression. The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in history. It started when the stock market crashed in 1929. World War II marks the end of this economic downfall that will forever be remembered. In the 1920s, it was the most brutal time period for men workers trying to keep and find jobs. They were always trying to get jobs that they can keep for a long period of time. They also found jobs by themselves with nobody to help them. It was very rare to find two men who are trying to find jobs stay together. In the book Of Mice and Men, the main characters George and Lennie are traveling together to find a job that both of them can have together. George is the one finding the job and Lennie is traveling with him. The both of them had a job in Weed where they worked on a farm. But an incident caused them to leave that area entirely. Making them quit their only job they had and search for another job that they would be able to work together. The only thing that keeps them together is that they don’t want to be lonely. The author, John Steinbeck shows throughout the book that none of the characters want to be lonely. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck develops the concept of Loneliness through Candy’s age, Crooks different skin color, and Curley’s Wife’s gender to demonstrate how loneliness leads to sadness.
“Guys like us...are the loneliest guys in the world”(Steinbeck 15). Loneliness as a common feeling by the millions of migrant workers all over the United States during the Great Depression. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, set in this era, depicts a story of loneliness within an old man named Candy; a young woman known as Curley’s Wife; and a discriminated African American named Crooks, on a barely farm in California. The ranch is filled with migrant workers, but two stick out more than all the others. George and Lennie have a dream for their future, and they plan plan to pursue their own land. Together they support each other while still surrounded by a sea of broken and isolated souls. The theme of loneliness is revealed in the novella Of Mice and Men through the isolation felt by Steinbeck's characters.
Curley’s wife’s loneliness is from only being able to talk to Curley, a person who she doesn’t like. This makes her not consider consequences when dealing with Lennie. On page 87, Curley’s wife says quote, “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody, but Curley. Else he gets mad.” This shows how being isolated made her want to talk to someone so much that she did not think about how Lennie broke Curley’s hand, how he killed a dog which was lying near them and how Lennie did not want to speak to her. Normally this would be enough to make someone go away, but the environment she’s in is so isolated that this is better. Because she is married, she can only speak to Curley who only talks about fighting and is not nice and if she tries to talk to others she gets judged. Paradoxically, being married made her more isolated. This changes the way she acts because the only person who does not judge her is Lennie, which is what led to her death. Another example is how her name is never mentioned in the book. Every time she is brought up, there is a reminder that she is married to Curley and yet still lonely. This supports the message that loneliness can affect anyone and change the way that people
