Imagine having your identity and culture stripped away from you. This is what has happened to many Indigenous people throughout history in Canada. This has been done through the process of colonization. There are many devastating impacts of colonization that has affected Indigenous people all over Canada including racism and stereotyping as well as the downfall of the health of Indigenous people. Racism against Indigenous people has been a major impact of colonialism throughout the years. The racism and institutionalized racism has grown over the years and has made it complicated for many Indigenous people to practice their spirituality and culture. There are also many health consequences of colonization including starvation, disease, mental illness and addiction. There are many impacts of colonization that have affected Indigenous people throughout history and continue to impact them today.

Throughout history, we see various forms of colonialism that have happened in the world. Multiple groups of people were affected by this act of colonizing. An example of the groups that were affected would include the Cherokees and the Mayans. Both of these groups of people experienced colonialism in similar ways, either by adaptation or resistance nevertheless they still had their differences.

The novel Things Fall Apart is written by Chinua Achebe who was a Nigerian author, in the book he shows the effects of the European colonization in western Africa. Christianity made some drastic changes to the Ibo community. The Igbo society was better off before Christianity was introduced into their community. Before the religion Christianity, the Igbo society was a structured community with their own costume and believes. They had their own Gods and a own religion that they believed in.

Colonialism is a word that is hard to universally define. It is the practise of taking full or partial control of other people’s land and goods and exploiting it economically. Colonialism took place all over of sub-Saharan Africa, with Great Britain, France, Belgium and Germany all taking large parts of this area. People believe that colonialism is still happening today but in a different way, as the colonisation of sub-Saharan Africa was so brutal. Britain took from Cairo to Cape Town, Nigeria and a few West-African regions. France took an east/west slice of Africa and also Madagascar. Belgium took Rwanda, Burundi and the Congo whilst Germany took Cameroon and Tanzania

Things Fall apart was written by Chinua Achebe and takes place in the 1800s. It is about the fall of a leader, Okonkwo, and the Igbo society. Okonkwo is a well respected and powerful tribe member in the Igbo village of Umuofia in eastern Nigeria. He first procures individual notoriety and refinement, and conveys honor to his town when he beats Amalinze the Cat in a wrestling tournament. Okonkwo decides to collect titles for himself and turn into a capable and affluent man despite his father's shortcomings. And throughout the book it shows how a religion can result in a bad way for a society or can positively impact it.

Africa became known as the “dark continent” through the Europeans eyes. Not only from the skin color of its inhabitants but also from the vast lands still undiscovered. Due to the Europeans’ view that Africa had a backward sense, they believed it was their responsibility to help. Conflict arose from the creation of a new society resulting in ethnic feuds and imperialism. European imperialistic powers subjugated Africa to strengthen their own economy. Africa’s rich supply of resources such as a large population had extremely detrimental to its economy. Slavery Sentence. The second colonialism's legacy is its economic influence on the life of the African people. Every colonial system interrupted the existing economic policies and the disruptions have varied from state to state. The most well known example is that their production was charged for food-crop to cash-crop. The colonialism also acts as a bridge which connect economically between Africa and the European colonial powers. It is obvious that the European countries were more beneficial than African colonies. The idea that the British were responsible for "civilizing" the tribe because they were “savages” (according to the colonizers) was because the Igbo people had a very different society from the British. The settler colonialism is perceived from two different perspectives, one is positive and the other one is negative. It is also related to the genocide of the natives and indigenous people. The positive side of the settler colonialism is related to the building of a new colonial system that might offer more benefit as compared to the existing systems of colonies. However, the major negative impact of settler colonialism is about the elimination of the natives. It does not justify the settler colonialism because it is more about the occupation of the land and nothing about the colonialism. It clearly indicates that it is about the access to land and nothing to do with the natives but to eliminate them from the land.

The European colonization of Africa brought racism, civil unrest, and insatiable greed; all of which have had lasting impacts on Africa.
