Cancer: Many potential direct effects of climate change on cancer risk, such as increased duration and intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, are well understood; however, the potential impact of changes in climate on exposure pathways for chemicals and toxins requires further study. Science should investigate the effects of mitigation and adaptation measures on cancer incidence so that the best strategies can be developed and implemented; for example, research to inform understanding of the benefits of alternative fuels, new battery and voltaic cells, and other technologies, as well as any potential adverse risks from exposure to their components and wastes. Better understanding of climate change impacts on the capacity of ocean and coastal
Climate Change- Climate is a long term change in the Earth's weather, especially due to an increase in the average atmospheric temperature. According to research, it was discovered that the Earth's temperature rose by 0.6 degrees Celsius (C) and predicted that the sea surface temperature may rise by up to 1 degrees C over the next 50 years. Unfortunately, carbon dioxide and methane gas levels are the highest they have ever been for the last 420000 years. These two gases with water vapour, nitrous oxide and halocarbons create the five predominate greenhouse gases, effecting the environment greatly. Furthermore, it is evident that an average person release 4 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Due to this fact, carbon dioxide
Emissions will also affect the carbon cycle as it will increase greenhouse gases as well as contribute to a feedback loop involving the polar ice caps in which trapped greenhouse gases will be released; thus contributing to global warming even more. Due to this, it is expected that the temperature will rise 4°C. As a result, it is expected one-fourth of the world species will possibly go extinct by 2050. This will be come through direct impact, where a certain species will be unable to adapt and will die off, as well as indirect impact, through food web disturbances. Finally, toxic wastes that are often leached into nearby lakes or rivers have impacted local residents. Samples taken from several animals and water sources near oil sand mine found high concentrations of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and levels of arsenic, mercury, cadmium and selenium have been leeched into the water, several of which are fat-soluble. Through the drinking of this water, as well as
Identify a broad range of current environmental health problems likely to be exacerbated by climate change. How might existing public health practices be altered to anticipate these effects of climate change? What other key sectors (beyond health) should be engaged?
With the increase in humans populating the planet, there comes a need for more and more resources, as well as more highways for transportation, leading to more cars on the road, and ultimately more greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas activity is obtained by subtracting the long wave radiation which escapes the earth from the estimated radiation emitted by the ocean surface (A.Raval, V.Ramanathan 1989). The escaping radiation has been measured since 1985 by the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) through the use of three orbiting satellites that sense longwave and shortwave radiation escaping the atmosphere. The estimated ocean radiation is found through direct use of the Stefan-Boltzmann law given the average temperature of the ocean surface. There seems to be a huge controversy about these greenhouse gases and how they affect the climate, and whether they even affect the global climate. This is not the first time in the earth’s history that a major climate change has occurred, referring back to the Ice Age when humans were nonexistent. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports predict that the average global temperature will rise about 2 - 4.5 degrees Celsius in the next 100 years, causing some drastic changes to the current environment (Lynch and Jenkins 2007). But if a major change in climate occurred without
The carbon dioxide levels in the 20th century have been highest in 650,000 years. Till 1950, the levels rose by 11% and recently the levels have risen by 40%. Arctic ice is melting rapidly. It is estimated that by 2040 the region is to have a completely ice free summer, or even earlier. More than 1 million species have become extinct due to disappearing habitats caused due to global warming. Sea levels have risen about 7 inches in the last 100 years, which is more than the previous 2000 years combined. The rising sea levels due to global warming could threaten the lives of people living along the coastal areas. The consumption of fossil fuels in last few decades has contributed much to the destruction of our environment. Global warming, climate
Global warming is the number one concern on the planet right now (Ankara 1). Ankara University suggests that “the most common definition of global warming is the process in which Earth’s temperatures increase due too many human activities” (“The Impact of Global…” 1). A basic background of how climate change is provoked is that it is caused by fossil fuels and carbon dioxide being released in the air due to many human activities. This event can potentially harm the human population and put many ecosystems around the world to extinction. Marine ecosystems, in general, are parts of the Earth’s hydrosphere, which make up large parts of the Earth and contain magnificent biodiversity from beautiful fish to the
Climate change, specifically in reference to C02 Emissions released by human use of fossil fuels and their consequential effects on the environment, is perhaps one of the most pressing issues we, not just as Americans, but as human beings face in our lifetimes. Though it may sound like a sensationalist statement the facts are hard to deny. In May of 2013, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
From a scientific point of view, the author describes and substantiates the existence of global warming and also observes the potential effects it could result in. These include of rising sea levels, shifted climate patterns, increased threats to infectious diseases, extreme global temperatures, and coastal erosion. But ultimately, the report informs readers that the degree to which global warming affects life on Earth primarily depends on our decisions.
Oral cancer can be caused by chewing tobacco--that is why baseball players all chew and spit seeds now! Sun exposure leading cause of many types of skin cancer one of the more aggressive one is melanoma. Tanning beds face new regulations secondary to the intense UV rays used….There has been research done that shows an increase risk to skin cancer if you had severe burn when a child. HPV virus is also a cause for cervical cancer and for Head and Neck cancer. There is now a vaccine for HPV”. There are many links to cancer and the environment, but how can these things causing the cancer be
Global Warming has been a big issue in today’s world, but how can global warming affect biological systems. Climate Change could impact biological systems by rising sea levels, rising temperatures, more droughts, and to more deadly weather. Even today we can see what is happening to certain parts of the planet that are being effect by Climate Change. Could Global Warming be stopped so that these drastic changes to our planet won’t happen?
The issue with global warming has been mentioned in the past, but not necessarily taken seriously by many. Many people won’t take matters in their hands unless they are affected. Though the climate change isn’t as bad, it can cause health damage, such as skin cancer due to the rising temperatures, the spread of disease, and air pollution. Environmental Issue Expert Larry West, states that recycling, using less air conditioning, driving less, and simply conserving electricity are all beneficial in reducing global warming.
There is a serious situation is occurring on planet Earth that is causing a significant and harmful effect on communities, health, and the climate. It is Global Warming which can be defined as the constant heating of Earth 's surface, oceans and atmosphere. In order to understand global warming, the most important basic is to figure out how the of greenhouse effect plays an important part in its development. The greenhouse effect is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) that trap heat in the atmosphere that keeps the Earth warm. The information this text will discuss is the meaning of global warming, the causes, and most importantly how citizens can help to rectify the situation. Humanity must tickle this problem immediately before the consequences increase and affect the entire planet.
Global warming should be one of the gravest concerns to the future of human kind and making an effort on every individual level will decrease the factors that have the greatest impact such as combustion emissions and hazardous chemicals. No scientist would deny the increase and temperature and none would stop at even saying that the problem will only increase exponentially. Along with greenhouse gases and CFC (Chloroflorocarbons) humans must realize that they are very significantly at the heart of the crisis. Not only does this threaten coastline properties and the health of the planet overall, habitats
Global warming is the constant increase of temperature in the earth’s atmosphere that is caused by the increase of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, greenhouse gases and many other pollutants. Chlorofluorocarbons are any type of compounds of carbon, hydrogen, chlorine, and fluorine which are harmful to the ozone layer. Global warming can affect many things, one example is the rising of temperature which can result in different types of disasters like storms, heat waves, floods, and droughts. Global warming also causes Higher death rates, Dirtier air, Higher wildlife extinction rates, the increase of Acidic Oceans, and Higher seas levels. In this essay, I will provide information that will show how harmful global warming can be to not only the earth but to humans and animals, and what we can do to prevent it from increasing.
It doesn’t take more than a glance at the news to notice an article related to climate change. I think that most people in the United States are aware of climate change, but many choose to blow it off as something of little importance. One of the areas where climate change is most impactful is in our oceans. Entire ecosystems of our oceans are changed when molecules like carbon dioxide are added into the mix. Carbon dioxide is a killer in the world’s oceans. Not only does this molecule acidify the ocean, but it also has direct consequences on many types of coral and sea plant life. Acidification of planet earth’s seas affects all living organisms under water. I think it is time to address some of the issues that climate change and ocean acidification bring to earth’s healthy oceans and discuss possible ways to cut carbon emissions.
