Childhood sexual abuse has many short term and long term effects on the victim. Being sexually abused at a young age can lead to depression, anxiety or stress. In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Jeannette’s father and brother were both abused, and consequently suffered some of these effects. Shyness, irritability, depression, anxiety and more are all effects that sexual abuse can have on a victim. Being sexually abused is a very traumatizing experience, and this form of victimization at a young age only amplifies the situation. The mortifying nature of child sexual abuse often brings along with it changes in the victim's life. Some of the numerous short term effects (problems that impact them while they are still at a young …show more content…
These “may be wide-ranging… [including] anxiety-related, self-destructive behaviors such as alcoholism or drug abuse, anxiety attacks, and insomnia” (Effects). In the memoir (Walls), Rex exhibited almost all of these. Even though it was never stated that Rex was abused by his mother when he was younger, it was implied after Brian was raped. After Jeanette realized what happened to Brian, she started thinking how her father was most likely abused too, and that’s why he behaves the way he does today. Rex Walls shows the long term effects of child sexual assault very well, to the point that Jeannette (even at a young age herself) was able to make the connection. “Depression has been found to be the most common long-term symptom among survivors [of child sexual abuse]... After years of negative self thoughts, survivors have feelings of worthlessness and avoid others because they believe they have nothing to offer” (Hall 2). This specifically applies to Rex’s character in The Glass Castle. Also brought on by his alcoholism and gambling issues, Rex Walls constantly found that he had nothing to provide for his family, and was even embarrassed by that. If something went wrong, Rex would fall into a depressive state and feel worthless (Walls). These hard times are what often led him to start gambling and drinking again, causing
Moreover, Rosemary takes advantage of the children’s personalities by asking to forgive her for her extraordinary selfishness. Although the children are provided with a voice to forgive, Rosemary’s voice overpowers their identity. In comparison, psychological analysis supports how difficult it is to identify emotional and psychological abuse. The fact that the children have undergone such a heartbreaking experience, it does not mean the experience can be easily identified or treated because of its abstract nature. The victims of emotional abuse can only tell a story; they cannot transfer an exact replica of their experience to the person that is treating them. Jeannette and her siblings too, can only tell a story of how emotional abuse took away their voice. That being said, victims of emotional abuse in reality often should require psychological therapy, but, The Glass Castle optimistically shows that the children did not require treatment because the author herself seeks treatment through writing the book
Many children are affected by child abuse or neglect across the globe. The book The Glass Castle written by Jeannette Walls is about herself and the time set is in her childhood. In the book Jeannette talks about all the hardships that she and her siblings had to face while growing up with a very poor family and always being on the move. In the book it's very evident that Jeannette and her siblings face many types of abuse and neglect from many events that take place inside The Glass Castle. The Walls children should have been taken away from child protective services.
Dave Pelzer once said “Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun; not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul” (Goodreads). Indeed, most parents and other caregivers do not intentionally hurt their children. However, many children each year are traumatized by physical, sexual, emotional, psychological abuse, and neglect. In the memoir The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls reveals that she cannot lift the burden of her childhood experiences. Throughout writing The Glass Castle, the author tries to comfort herself to relieve her pain, examine her past and portray to her readers how damaging the legacy of abuse and neglect can be.
Rex asks Jeannette to come to a “business meeting” with him so he can repay her for the money he spent on booze. He takes her to a bar to basically prostitute her for money. When the family moves to Welch and move in with Rex’s family the kids and Erma have an incident where touches Brian inappropriately. The girls come to his rescue only to be scolded by their parents. Jeannette and Stanley have an incident where he tries to touch her inappropriately, when Jeannette tells her mom about it, her mom feels bad for Stanley and tells Jeannette if she’s ok then nothing bad
19). A great majority of children that are sexually abused will show moderate to severe symptoms at some point in their life (Hornor, 2010). The degree of symptomatic behavior depends on the type and severity of sexual abuse, the age and gender of the child, the age and gender of the perpetrator, the relationship between the child and the perpetrator, accompanying physical abuse, and the number, frequency, and duration of abuse (Bahali et al., 2010). Short-term effects of CSA include: impulsive behavior (aggressiveness, hostility), emotional distress (anxiety, fear, and somatic complaints), low self-esteem, dissociative symptoms (amnesia, forgetfulness, dreaming, multiple personality disorder, and fainting), and conversion disorder (Bahali et al., 2010). Long-term effects include: post-traumatic stress disorder, depressive disorder, sexual dysfunction, borderline personality disorder, somatization, eating disorders, self-destructive or suicidal behavior, repeated victimization, criminal behavior, substance abuse and prostitution (Bahali et al., 2010). In agreement, Ozbaran et al., (2008) reported that sexually abused children have a high incidence of behavior problems including anxiety, depression, attention problems, aggression, social problems, social withdrawal, and somatization. Genital CSA is
While child sexual abuse survivors may show symptoms of PTSD as well as symptoms that may include anxiety, low self esteem, difficulty setting safe limits with others and relationship problems. Survivors may have bad dreams. They may act out aspects of the abuse in their play. They might show other fears and worries. Young children may lose skills they once learned and act younger than they are. For example, an abused child might start wetting the bed or sucking his or her thumb. Some sexual abuse survivors show out-of-place sexual behaviors that are not expected in a child. Sexual abuse can be very confusing
Child Abuse is the act of someone who looks after a child, like a parent or relative, who decides to inflict injury, emotional trauma, or even death upon that person. In the memoir, The Glass Castle, written by Jeannette Walls, there is most definitely multiple acts of child abuse that was brought upon the Walls children. There are four types of child abuse. There is physical, neglect, emotional, and sexual. The parents used more neglect than the others on their children. The acts of abuse that were brought upon the children should have resulted in them being taken away by Child Protective Services.

Childhood sexual abuse is one form child abuse that includes a wide range of actions between a child and an adult or older child. It is a topic that is receiving much attention and concern in recent years. In this paper several points will be discussed regarding childhood sexual abuse. Research has shown that being molested at a young age effects the children in their adolescent years. The numbers of sexually abused children are increasing every day. After conducting research of molestation in children aged 5 to 15, the outcome of children is conflicted by poor self-esteem, becoming depressed and their behavior patterns are affected. After 1 year of research their actions changed and lead them to becoming shy or violent. If the child was abused they would try to act tough and become violent, if they were just touched they would become shy and it would be hard to open to everybody. Depending on who molested the child it would change the way they would communicate with everybody around them. After studying the children from a broad age range of 5 to 15, and from different places around the world, most of the time the molesters were known to their victims.
