Edward's appearance is not like any other. He has dark armor clothing that appears frightening. He has scissors as hands which make Edward dangerous. His face is very pale with scares all over. The unusual and scary look makes the audience know the Edward is not like others. All though this makes the film interesting. After Peg gets her haircut done by Edward, she looks unprofessional and wacky. Her hair flows to one side and is cut uneven. The other side of her head is shaved very close to the scalp. The way peg appears in the film lets the audience know that she is a wacky and loving type. And she doesn't care what people think. When we first see peg's haircut, Burrton uses cinematic technique pan. This lets the audience take in slowly what peg is
Edward Scissorhands is objectified and is taken advantage of by the people who do not accept him. Edward Scissorhands is considered “different” when he creates topiary with his “hands”. The long shot of the suburb streets with the topiary on the lawns gives us a sense that Edward is being used by the community. When Edward is grooming dogs and styling lady’s hair Edward is being taken advantage of by his hands. The montage of various ladies having their hair cut and not compensating Edward shows us that he is being oppressed.
The first person who first meets Edward is Peg when she is going up to the mansion to sell her Avon cosmetics. He comes out of the shadows Peg is shocked by his looks. “Oh my! What happened to you?” She asked shocked by his scissor hands. During this the camera shots of Edward are mostly close ups on his face and hands point out his most unique and different features. Edward’s clothes throughout the entire movie are tight, black, leather which is very different to the bright colourful town’s people’s clothes and often these clothes made him stand out which set him apart from the town’s people. Edward isn’t just set apart by film techniques, he is also very much an outsider to the towns who find him curious. This is shown in a few situations. The main one is at the BBQ when George Monroe meets Edward and asks him to play cards. “Would you like that? The only thing is you can’t cut.” George said making fun of Edward’s differences, something he wouldn’t do to a friend. While Edward and Esmeralda are quite different from the town’s people, Peg is one of them but struggles to fit in at times because of how she sees things and how she is more
This metaphorical terminology fits Edward with accurate precision as he has and shows more emotion than everyone else in the film as well as having emotions all
The camera focuses on Edward’s face; it shows how pale and sad he is. The gothic horror feature used here is the physical appearance of the “monster”. Edward is a large, dark figure with objects (his scissor hands) that can cause harm. This is very stereotypical of the gothic monster as this has been used in Frankenstein (1931) and Nosferatu (1922), and is imprinted in viewers’ minds. But what makes us question how monstrous Edward truly is, is his facial expression and the way he talks. Unlike most gothic horror monsters, he does not have a scary personality. He is shy and is not the antagonist. As the story continues, all the bad deeds he does, are actually the result of someone else taking advantage of him. As viewers, we see this, and we are led to believe that it is not Edward who is the monster, but rather the community Peg has brought him into. By manipulating common features of gothic horror films, Edward Scissorhands is able to influence the audience into believing the “monster” of the film is Edward, but when the tradition is changed, it makes us think that not everything is black and white, and that to get the correct judgement, we must wait until all evidence is presented.
Usually a change occurs in the main Character of a Fantasy Film e, this could be in a good way or a bad way. In Edward scissor hands Edward is the main Character. He is lonely innocent person who lives in a big mansion. Edward has never had contact with humans so when Peg first sees Edward he is very frightened and decides to hide. Moreover the dialogues that Edward says when he first meets Peg is very desperate and scared however at the end of the movie Edward speaks louder and more confidently. During his stay with Peg he wore white clothes as he returned to the castle he cut off the white clothes leaving the black underneath. This shows a change in personality and figure as Edward becomes himself and doesn’t want to change for the people in the community. However during the course of the film Edward gets more and more comfortable with Humans. Even
Edward’s clothes also highlight the fact that he doesn’t belong. He is first seen wearing a black costume but once he returns home to Peggy’s home she puts ‘normal’ colourful clothes on him. However, he does not remove his original outfit and this symbolises the fact that he is different but people are trying to make him assimilate and fit in. Peg Boggs “Let me get you some towels and I'll see what we can find for you to wear. You know what? I think I have some of Bill's old clothes in here. This is perfect! Here. These should just fit you.”
people. There are many differences shown between Edward Scissorhands and the townspeople, this is easily viewed through the costumes they are wearing. Edward’s costume consists of a black leather vest with a variety of different dark belts around his waist, neck and on his arms, his costume also consists of dark leather pants, which also has a variety of dark belts around his legs. This is also shown in Edward’s pale and scarred face, and in his black hair. Edwards costume relates to the dark, gothic world. The residents of the town Suburbia wear costumes that consist of pastel colours and tacky clothing. The difference between the costumes of Edward and the residents also connects us to what the two world themes are, one that is dark, bland, and gothic and one that is colourful and tacky. This shows the two different worlds, one that is gothic and one that is simple, colourful, and regular. Edwards costume shows darkness, horror, and fear, which shows that his costume relates to the dark, gothic world. The town member’s costumes consist of
In ‘Edward Scissorhands’, Edward goes through new experiences that show his individuality and how he is different to all the community. In the film, characters such as Joyce and Jim firstly rejected Edward as he was different, they then adored him as he did unique art such as hairdressing, gardening, grooming dogs, cutting meat and ice sculpting. Once Edward discovered his talents, he became very popular amongst the community. They used him so that they would have an easier life, but then when he did something wrong he was then rejected again. Being the individual Edward was in the community, he experienced so many new things such as his growing relationship with Kim. His new experiences with Kim made him learn what true feelings for a girl really was. As great as being and individual is with all this said however, being an individual can also be dangerous in a way, as you would get judged by others around you for being yourself. Edward in the beginning of the film had that exact problem, everyone would be judging him for having scissors as hands and would think of him as a scary monster. The reason Edward went to the community in the first place was because of Peg. Peg
The film Edward Scissorhands is a contemporary archetype of the gothic genre exploring themes such as unrequited love, social rejection and human creation as defined by Tim Burton. Feature films explore different ideals that can be categorized into different genres that create expectations among audiences about characters, settings, plots and themes. Edward Scisscorhands directed by Tim Burton in the year 1990 is described as both a dark romantic fantasy and a gothic horror film. The film tells a story about Edward Scissorhands, the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can give Edward his normal hands in place of his scissor hands. Edward is taken from the mansion he lives in by a suburban family in an attempt to live a
How would you feel if you had scissors as hands? In the beginning of Edward Scissorhands, Edward wasn't finished so he was left with scissors as hands. During the movie Edward goes through a journey trying to fit in and be accepted by everyone. In the film Edward Scissorhands, director Tim Burton uses the stylistic elements of juxtaposition and symbolism to develop the theme, never judge someone by their appearance.
The film ‘Edward Scissorhands’ by Tim Burton is a story about a lonely boy with a unique disability: scissor hands, it follows Edward as he experiences life outside of his isolated home and through his hardships of dealing with prejudice and people treating him differently. It also follows him when he makes judgments of others wrongly and shows the consequences to both parties from those decisions made on them.
Tim Burton, the director of Edward Scissorhands, draws inspiration for his work from fairytales and children’s stories. He has always had an affinity for the darker elements of these stories, which is made evident in the film Edward Scissorhands. The film’s main character is a man named Edward who has scissors for hands. Later, it is shown that he was a metal figure brought to life by his inventor, an elderly man who dies before he is able to give Edward human hands. Edward lives in a mansion on a hill on the edge of town, all alone, until a woman named Peg finds him and bring him to live with her family. Edward immediately develops an attraction to Peg’s daughter, Kim, though she has a boyfriend. Towards the end of the film, Kim tells Edward that she loves him, and Edward seems to be completed. However, Edward struggles to conform to society, and eventually is forced by the members of the community to return to his mansion, isolated from any human interaction. The film combines a make-believe character, as often found in children’s books, with elements of a horror film, like suspicion and violence. The film features several flashbacks throughout that elaborate on Edward’s past and show how he came to be. Burton uses these flashbacks to grow the audience’s understanding of Edward, explain events, and emphasize themes.
Burton often uses low-key lighting to show isolation, and the idea that characters are isolated because of the fear that others have. Edward Scissorhands is an isolated character who has spent his whole life hiding because he is different. Burton uses
In ‘Edward Scissorhands’, conformity is a main theme throughout the entire movie, which is shown through the community and the characters that live within it. Many things throughout the movie show how the community conforms. For example, their houses are all one solid colour and all have the same shape, the characters are all dressed the same and all act very similarly. When Edward is introduced to the community, he is immediately looked upon as an outsider who does not follow the community’s nature. Most importantly, Edward is different because of his scissor hands. This does not only make him an outcast, but it makes him dangerous to the community, but surprisingly special. Both of Edward’s positive and negative differences show how he does not conform to the community; however, this does not stop him and his friends from attempting to make him indistinguishable. “But if you had regular hands, you'd be like everyone else.” There are many attempts to make Edward conform, whether it is the Bogg’s, the people in the
The film shows how judgmental society can be and unwilling to accept someone who appears different or incomplete. The film Edward Scissorhands is pretty much self-explanatory. The main character Edward has scissors for hands and is referred to as "handicap, freak, and cripple" (Burton, Edward Scissorhands). Edward is an incomplete invention, so therefore, society views Edward as being not normal because he doesn't look or conform to their perception
