The eighth governor of Arkansas was Isaac Murphy. Isaac was governor from 1864-1868. He was not famous for just being a governor; he was famous for so many other things, but the thing that makes him the most famous was the Arkansas Secession Convention. Two drunken white men raped a young black girl, Tonya Hailey, who was walking from a small store where she bought groceries. When the news reached her father, Carl Lee Hailey, he went to their hearing, where he shot and killed the two men, while also wounding a police officer. Carl Lee hires a white attorney, Jake Brigance, to represent him in court. Many people and organizations, such as the Ku Klux Klan, tried to sabotage Brigance’s likelihood of winning the case. With the help of a liberal law student, Brigance successfully acquitted Carl Lee Hailey for the murders of the two rapists.

Thomas D’Arcy McGee’s assassination was unjust because many of his ideologies and suppositions contributed to Canada’s overall success as a combined nation; however, some minorities saw him as a hindrance to the ultimate creation of a Canadian Confederation. After he gave a speech for a meeting at the House of Commons, McGee was repeatedly shot as he walked into his apartment. The perpetrator was Patrick J. Welhan; he was a middle aged man part of an Irish independence group that McGee later spoke out against. McGee passed away on his doorstep on April 7, 1868; Welhan was convicted and was later hanged that month.

Hugh Williamson was born on December 15th, 1735 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. As a child, his father sent him off to get a liberal education; many family issues arose, such as, his parent’s careers and his mother, Mary Davison, captured by Blackbeard. As an adult, Hugh had many different jobs and moved from state to state. Hugh continued in the mercantile business with his brother, and also reentered private medical practice in North Carolina. In 1776 he was elected into the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence. At 44 years old, he married Maria Apthorpe and had 2 children. In his later life, After his 2 sons and wife’s death, he gave up his profession as a physician, and continued writing philosophical publications in New York. On May 22nd, 1819 Hugh Williamson died in New York City.

There are many African American public figures, who have inspired the hearts and minds of eager Black youth. These individuals have instilled within the community a sense of purpose and promise which has carried over into following generations. Some of these persons are household names and familiar pop culture icons. Many, however, are the unsung heroes who have continued to work in the shadows, while bringing others into the light of hope. One such individual, Dr. Calvin Williams, began his journey on the concrete slabs and in the dilapidated houses of New Orleans, Louisiana's Lower Ninth Ward.

Edmund Rice started off in Ireland where he grew up with a relatively Catholic family. He received a small education before joining a business in Waterford owned by his uncle, giving supplies to the British Navy and the British Army. Edmund as very successful in the business industry and he became very wealthy. Once he was married, around the same time his wife gave birth, she passed away. He then went on to sell his business to begin teaching poor boys who were from the streets of Waterford. After that, he worked on building a school and then builds a congregation that is now worldwide.
