An e-cigarette is a device used to simulate smoking, which has a cartridge with a heater that vaporizes the liquid nicotine rather than burning it. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are devices that deliver aerosolized nicotine to the user by heating a liquid (typically propylene glycol) containing nicotine and flavoring agents. Most devices share a common design – a plastic tube containing a battery, an airflow sensor, a heating element and a cartridge containing the liquid (Figure 1).
The use of e-cigarettes has been growing substantially in recent years as a much safer and healthier alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes. The use of e-cigarettes is also known as vaping since e-cigarettes work by using water vapor instead of smoke, and they closely emulate the look and feel of smoking without the harmful health effects of tobacco smoke. While many people enjoy the benefits of vaping, there are several myths about vaping that have sprung up recently that are simply not true.
Electronic cigarettes are a huge product on the market right now, with nearly over 300 different brands. All of the brands are on the market without FDA evaluation or government oversight; which means it is difficult to know the chemical make-up and the safety of this device. E-cigarettes are known to be an electronic nicotine delivery system that allows users to inhale aerosol vapor that contains nicotine and other chemicals. A heating element within the e-cigarette heats the main component of the e-cigarette known as the e-liquid which allows for the releasing of the chemical filled aerosol. The aerosol vapor e-cigarette contains nicotine and many other substances.
Once the smoker inhales it, this liquid nicotine is turned into vapor with the support of powered atomizer to supply the person a nicotine hit inside handful of seconds as compared to the nicotine patches or gum. When the consumer takes a puff from an electronic cigarette, a little orange LED light glows at its tip which provides the consumer, an experience of an unique standard cigarette.
Smokers should take any chance they have to quit. E-cigarettes are much safer than normal cigarettes. The chemicals in cigarettes can cause many deadly diseases. These include cancer, stroke, heart disease, lung disease and many others. However e-cigarettes don’t contain these harmful chemicals.

In the study involving smoking regular tobacco cigarettes the amount of nicotine levels were ten times higher at almost 32 micrograms per cubic meter (Reuters, 2014). E-cigarettes did not change the amount of carbon monoxide or other gases in the air and did not produce some particulate matter that regular cigarettes do at about seven times more. In conclusion with this study exposure to nicotine is lower when compared to exposure from tobacco smoke, and nicotine is relatively safer when compared to other dangerous toxicants in tobacco smoke according to Goniewicz (Reuter, 2014).
There is a new trend hitting the market known as e-cigarettes, or “vaping.” Many people believe that e-cigarettes are better than traditional cigarettes, but research shows just how unhealthy and harmful e-cigarettes are for everyone. The FDA has not yet decided if e-cigarettes should be regulated like tobacco products. E-cigarettes are marketed to help people quit smoking and live a healthier nonsmoking life. E-cigarettes are meant to help break the habit of smoking, but why are there so many “toxic chemicals” (Gilger) in the vapor? Is this new invention to help people quit smoking or just another way for tobacco companies to get richer?

With a lack of scientific study by the very agency concerned with the public health, it is safe to say that Electronic Cigarettes should be avoided at all costs. Do not rush to the finish line based on loose information. No matter what form it comes in, smoking is bad. There are plenty of toxins that enter the body just from the ambient air that people breathe, why add more to the mix? Do not be afraid to take a stand and say no more self pollution.
One of my first memories in the United States was taking a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) class. I was in sixth grade and a top student, as talking about drugs and alcohol and the way they affect us was fascinating to me. This is why, the following year, I volunteered to become a peer educator in Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U). For a couple of years, I gave presentations to young students which included facts, demonstrations, and games, to spread the knowledge that tobacco is harmful and that staying away from smoking prolongs life expectancy and increases the quality of life. It should come as no surprise, then, that I consider myself a big proponent of staying tobacco-free and encouraging others to quit smoking as a great way to promote health. I remember watching my mom and sister as they took part in their nightly ritual of smoking a few cigarettes to unwind. “Did you know that a main component of cigarettes is used as rocket fuel?” I would ask them, as I opened the window and they stared back at me blankly. “We know, we know” was the answer every time. I knew that convincing them to quit was no easy task, but I was committed. Day after day, I proudly stated a new fact about the evils of smoking. Finally one day, they quit. With technological innovations happening everyday, many products are being created promoting health. Among these products is what is known as a e-cigarette. With no tobacco, tar, or even smoke, it has to be safe. Or is it? E-cigarettes were first introduced in 2006 as an alternative to smoking tobacco products. These e-cigarettes use vapor as opposed to smoke. The user still can receive their fill of nicotine with an added bonus of a flavor choice. With there first launch they weren 't seen as a breakthrough to many people and quickly was pushed aside. However, with growing technological advancements they have become a trending alternative to the normal cigarette. Many are quick to assume that the lack of actual tobacco results in a less dangerous product. But is it actually what it seems?
The question should not be if e-cigarettes are bad or not, but if they are better for you than the alternative. Many people believe that since vaporizers have only been around for a little over ten years, people do not know what the long term effects from them will be. Cigarettes have thousands of chemicals in them, with at least seventy of them being carcinogens, while vaporizers do not create big enough quantities of carcinogens to pose a real threat (McDonald). E-cigarettes do have an impact of people’s health, but there is little evidence suggesting that they are not as bad as some individuals make them seem to be.
