“Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco Testing”
The procedure of testing student for drugs, alcohol and tobacco before every school day should be allowed. The fact that the subject of drug testing has even been brought up is a sign that illegal substances have become troublesome in high school environments. Therefore, school officials should be allowed to use any means necessary to discourage the use of these illegal substances, even if it means that the school officials could become dangerously close to violating the students’ constitutional rights. A student under the influence of drugs or alcohol could endanger his or her fellow students or faculty and that student should not be allowed to attend that school. School

Any one of these illegal substances could affect the performance of the student, and, therefore, affect the overall outward appearance of the school. Parents would not be interested in sending their children to schools with horrible athletic programs due to drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
Secondly, a school environment that does not allow students to be under the influence of illegal substances will have higher grades. Higher grades would make the school look better to prospective students, and would, therefore, increase the enrollment. The school would be expelling the troublesome students while enrolling students that would raise the school’s reputation due to improved sports teams and standardized test scores. With the new enrollments, small private schools would earn more money and would then be able to spend more money on thing that would benefit the school, such as new books, desks, and sports equipment. So, all in all, by expelling students that have been proven to be under the influence of drugs, alcohol or tobacco, schools can improve the school environment in many ways.
Thirdly, when students attend a high school that does not allow its students to do illegal substances of any kind, those students are less likely to have drug or alcohol-related problems in their future. Because people, as teens, were never allowed to try drugs it is unlikely that those people would choose to try drugs when they
Mandatory Drug testing within schools reverses the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty and also violates the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution. Without suspicion of drug use, there is no probable cause to test student-athletes for drugs, thus violating the Fourth Amendment right to be free from unlawful searches. Drug testing student-athletes without acquiring sufficient evidence to base accusations on, is essentially asking them to provide the evidence of their own guilt which violates the Fifth Amendment right to protect
Resourse officers, teachers, and administrators with experience in this practice of drug searches often discover talking about the drug problem wasn't enough and action is needed. High school students do and think whatever they want. I know this because I am a high school student. Mary White, who is a principal at Longmont High School, reported that "we had used the tradional methoods of drug education. We had brought in speakers to talk to the parents and the kids but that didn't seem to be enough." (Robinson) Obviously, students make their own desicons no matter if it's good or bad for them. This kind of search and seizure pratice leads the students to not listen because the want to be rebilous and want to try different things in life. According
2. The Supreme Court established that a warrant isn’t necessary in school due to the fact that students aren’t under the protection of police officers but instead by the school. The court decided that a search is reasonable if a) “specific facts, together with rational inference from those facts, justified the intrusion, and b) the search was reasonably related in scope to the circumstances justifying it. Also, there can be random drug testing for students in school involved in extracurricular activities, and
Frederick Jackson Turner 's “The Significance of the Frontier” is, in his eyes, an accurate depiction of America 's development since the Colonial Period. However, Turner 's Frontier Thesis fails to discuss the involvement of two very specific groups of people, groups that certainly had too much of an effect on the progression of the country for him to safely leave out. Native Americans have a pivotal role in America 's history, yet Turner 's mentions of them in his thesis are extremely limited. For this reason, Frederick Jackson Turner 's “The Significance of the Frontier” is not an accurate depiction of the history of the United States.
Drug abuse is an increasing problem in our society, and specifically among teenagers. This increased affiliation with substances is very detrimental to teens. It causes an inability to focus, increases the chance that you will continue your drug abuse through your adulthood and it greatly damages the brain and many other organs. Our brains are developing when we are in our adolescence, which is why it is very important to discourage kids experimenting with drugs.
The goal of mandatory drug testing would be to reduce student substance by deterring substance use, detecting substance use, and the influence of the behaviors of students peers. Students involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports that are subject to in school drug testing, report less drug use than students in high school that do not play a sport and do not get drug tested. By drug testing the Athens student body would help by insure a safe, secure, and healthy school environment where students can reach their full academic potential to learn. Athens High schools goal should be to identify students with possible drug abuse issues and to intervene. Students should be required to take drug test to be allowed to park on campus. Less drugs in
In January of 1996, six months after the United States Supreme Court ruled that it was appropriate for Oregon’s school district 47J in Vernonia, to require student athletes in middle school and high school to participate in random, suspicionless drug tests, one percent out of the 16,000 schools in the country had brought the random drug testing into their facilities. (Taylor, Robert) Even though the Supreme Court ruled this way, they did not feel that this testing was a good idea. There had to of been some reason for this. (Bailey, William) If only one out 16,000 schools pick up on drug testing as a good idea, then there is more than likely something that the schools don’t think is right with it or they are unable to do it for some reason. Research shows that drug testing of public school athletes is not a good idea because it singles out athletes from all of the students in the school and suspects them of using drugs it is also a waste of time and money, and consists of low accuracy tests that so not always give the correct results.
The testing causes teens to become more aware and careful but it will not stop from them smoking. It is a waste of money and time because those kids are making their own decisions to resort to drugs. The government cannot make the decisions for the people only guide them in the right direction. The researches found that female rates of drug abuse went down in the high school community only in the schools with a “positive” environment. That shows that females who thought that what they were doing was wrong then had the resources to stop doing so because life got harder for those in a harsh environment since more pressure was put on to keep there actions under the table. People, especially youth, will do what they want to do no matter what. The best thing for the government to do is give students the ability to learn from whatever decision they make and use that tax money for something more productive for the nation. If the government really wants to see an improvement in the use of drugs in high schools then they should improve the environments and knowledge presented to the students about drug use. Once a student fails a random drug test their plan for their future can change extremely. Like me for instance, if one of our students failed a drug test at school then they would be asked to leave which means losing the opportunity to represent a highly respected team and would most likely lose a scholarship. That’s years of practice and
The future is a mystery and people do not know what holds for them in the future, but knowing the future can lead to a disastrous ending. In the play “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare, a brave lord name Macbeth was once great, but tragically lost everything after being told about his future and what he is destined for. Macbeth would soon be motivated by these prophecies and would start doing terrible deed just so no one can get in his way. Macbeth’s action starts to depend on the prophecies and he soon would start to get confident, but would start to lose things in his life one by one due to his highly confident thinking and also leads to his failure.
In many high schools around the country, student athletes are using drugs. “The percent of students that have drunk alcohol is 72.5% while the number of students who have used marijuana is 36.8%” (Report: Nearly Half of High School Students Using Drugs, Alcohol). The students believe that since they are athletes that they do not need to abide by the rules because they feel more superior and that the narcotic will not hurt or affect them. Implementing random drug tests for athletes will create a positive image and not hurt others or themselves. Schools need to have drug tests for student athletes because drugs effect relationships, using drugs have consequences, and lastly they have a major effect on the body.
I truly believe that if you can approach and tackle an issue before it arises you have a better chance of preventing long-term issues that will emerge in the future. Through my studies I have learned that if you educate students on bad choice making and the consequences that come from it you have a better chance for those students not to make those bad decisions. For this Midterm Project I plan to target high school students and inform them about drug use and abuse. In my opinion I think that if we teach high school students the effects that drugs can have on your body and your future maybe we can prevent them from using drugs for the first time or stop the issue before it gets out of hand. Students who are in high school can be hard to talk to but if you use material and language that catches their attention your speech can very influential to them. I want to prevent teens from using drugs. I want and need them to be educated on all the harms that illegal substances do to your body immediately after using them and what long-term effects come with it as well. Students should be shown real life examples of citizens who have lived their lives influenced by drugs and examples of successful people who have chose a
Many people take their lives for granted without even realizing how lucky they are to be alive another day. Roughly around 151,600 people die each day. Everyday a child loses a parent or a spouse loses a lover. People die in war, old age, or just unknown and unnatural causes. Death seems to be the theme or mood of “War is never over” and “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night”.
The big controversy right now within the government and high schools is whether or not random drug testing should be legal in schools. There are many reasons why it should not be legalized, one reason being it goes against the fourth amendment. Why should we have testing in schools when many major health organizations oppose it? All it will do is make teens turn to other illegal and counterproductive things. These are many reasons why drug testing should not be allowed in high schools.
In "Identifying Students at Risk for Drug Use" the web site's author lists factors in a teen's life that can make him or her more susceptible to drug use and its immediate problems, such as low academic achievement, poor class attendance, and dropping out of school. Students coming from a family history of alcoholism, criminal, or antisocial behavior, are at a higher risk for drug use than students who do not have family structure and management problems. Students who have long periods of time without adult supervision and those who have bad school attendance also tend to have a lack of motivation to do school work. This means that they have alternate things to do with their time, so they are not performing as well as they could be as students.
Multiple categories were selected. It measured if students skipped class, skipped more than one class, or skipped an entire day. Furthermore, it asked about what those students did while being truent. This could range from nothing to participating in drugs or alcohol. It also measured their grades, how well they liked school, their parent or guardian likeness, and overall attachment to teachers and peers (Henry, 2010). After the surveys, the researchers found a prolific quarelation. Truent youth were less likely to live with both parents, they were on free and reduced lunches, the problems were not race or gender specific, and they had lower academic performace. If a student missed an entire day they were more likely to use drugs or alcohol compared to missing a class or more than one class. The reason they skipped school could be related to being under the influence after doing it the night before even. Suprisingly marijuana claimed fifty percent of those truent, alcohol was fourty-five percent, and other drugs were twenty-seven percent. Moreover, there are other reasons for youth to skip such as depression, family issues, having bad peer groups, etc. However, this can lead to students using drugs as well. It becomes a way out of their problems, but they are too young to realize the harm it is causing them (Henry,
