Free Will In Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'

The future is a mystery and people do not know what holds for them in the future, but knowing the future can lead to a disastrous ending. In the play “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare, a brave lord name Macbeth was once great, but tragically lost everything after being told about his future and what he is destined for. Macbeth would soon be motivated by these prophecies and would start doing terrible deed just so no one can get in his way. Macbeth’s action starts to depend on the prophecies and he soon would start to get confident, but would start to lose things in his life one by one due to his highly confident thinking and also leads to his failure.

The prophecies are told by the three witches and they are told a certain way which would make Macbeth curious. For the first prophecy the witches greets Macbeth “ All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!” (I.iii.51). In this quote, the three witches tells Macbeth that he is the thane of Glamis, which Macbeth knows it’s already true. The witches greet Macbeth with “ All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!”(I.iii.53). This quote shows that from here Macbeth will become king and after hearing this Macbeth is driven with curiosity if he will really become king. The other prophecy is “ Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood To high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him.”(Iv.i.105-107). After hearing that he can not be beaten until Great Birnam Wood reaches high up the castle Dunsinane Macbeth wis driven with confidence, which Macbeth knows that it is impossible for trees to grow up mountains. With these prophecies Macbeth was fully confident that he can not be beaten, which he fully relies on and also driven him to do terrible
