This experiment involves studying the development times of three strains of Drosophilia melongaster. A total of 3 vials will be used with each vial containing one strain of Drosophilia melongaster. Observations for each vial will include observing how many Drosophilia melongaster flies are in each stage of development. The 4 stages of development for Drosophilia melongaster are egg, larvae, pupae, and finally adult. This experiment will determine with some degree of certainty whether a defect in mitochondria function in Drosophilia melongaster can affect developmental
Jacob is three and Patrick is 18 months older than him. Both were involved in the “Mean Monkey” experiment and reacted in different ways. In the experiment Jacob and Patrick were both told that they were going to pick their favorite sticker. They were also, told that the “ mean monkey” would want the sticker they would pick, so they would have to think of a way to get the monkey to pick the sticker they don’t want. Jacob was first, and when asked which sticker he wanted, he chose the one he really liked, so the mean monkey picked that one.
This experiment was conducted on pillbugs (Armadillidiidae) from the class Malacostraca and order Isopods. These bugs were used to preform a Natural Experiment to test their response and attraction to chocolate and/or vanilla flavored chips. During the experiment, the pill-bugs will have the opportunity to choose between the two kinds of chips and the favored flavor will be noted for each bug.
Throughout this experiment a number of random and procedural errors were apparent; these errors could have affected the results of the experiment in a number of ways. One experimental error that occurred during the experiment was that some flies became stuck in the food source and died. The main cause of this was the fact that the fly vials were stood up (vertically) before the flies had fully recovered from the anaesthetic. This could be overcome in future experiments by ensuring that the vials are kept horizontal until all of the flies fully recover from the anaesthetic.
Introduction: The intention of this lab was to gain a better understanding of Mendelian genetics and inheritance patterns of the drosophila fruit fly. This was tasked through inspecting phenotypes present in the dihybrid crosses performed on the flies. An experimental virtual fly lab assignment was also used to analyze the inheritance patterns. Specifically, the purpose of our drosophila crosses is to establish which phenotypes are dominant/recessive, if the traits are inherited through autosome or sex chromosomes and whether independent assortment or linkage is responsible for the expressed traits.
Individual Daphnia magna are transferred to a microscopic slide using a pipette. The Daphnia was moving freely in a drop of H2O on the slide. For the control, the heart rate of D. magna is observed for 15 seconds
Due to the miniature size of a Daphnia, biologists have had unique troubles with analysing the way the systems of the Daphnia function. Biologists have argued, that the circulatory system of a Daphnia relies on diffusion or convection. However, it has been decided that depending on the oxygen levels in the environment will affect the way that the circulatory system of the Daphnia functions. The levels of haemoglobin will also affect the functioning of the circulatory system in the water flea. Haemoglobin is a red blood cell, assisting the
Why do organisms respond to environmental factors? Organisms keep themselves in the most favorable conditions in order to survive. Pill bugs are members of the terrestrial isopod family. Terrestrial Isopods retrieve oxygen through their gills and live in dark damp environments. These organisms eat decaying plant and animal matter. Sow bugs, also known as pill bugs were tested to see how they react or respond to environmental factors. In this lab two different experiments were conducted. During the first experiment pill bugs were tested to see if they prefer a light environment or a dark environment. Throughout second experiment the pill bugs were tested to see how many of the bugs prefer an environment with vinegar or environment
Research groups from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine and the Institute of Evolution at the University of Haifa have been studying the model organism, Sordaria fimicola, in regards to controlling cross over frequency in response to environmental pressures. Sordaria fimicola is a good model organism because it has a fast life cycle and elongated asci that are easily seen under a microscope. In addition, there are multiple different combinations of ascospore colors due to recombination during meiosis.
Heterozygotes, which have the wild type phenotype, have normal sight which gives them the advantage of finding a mate and have a better success with attracting a mate with their courtship song (Kyriacou et al, 1978). The male heterozygous Drosophila had a better advantage at mating than the homozygotes, which were the ebony, and therefore we predict there will be more wild type by the end of the experiment.
We began the experiment by dividing into pairs and selecting one mutation of flies. Claire and I started off with Vestigial Flies. We then got our supplies; three clean tubes, three caps, three sponges, fly nap and wand, dissecting microscope, paintbrush, and three small plastic plates (for separation). As a team, Claire began to tap the container containing the mutant flies (this way they stayed at the bottom), while I had my extra sponge and clean tub ready to stick on top of hers’. After counting down to three, she pulled the sponge on her fly container and I quickly placed the empty vial on top. I then flipped the vials upside down and proceeded to knock as many to the empty vial as I could. We did the exact same step as before, counted

We measured the skulls of Homo erectus, Australopithecus, Homo habilis, and Neanderthals species by measuring the widths, heights, and length of their craniums and the diameter of the eye socket (orbit height). We used measuring tape and calipers to measure these skulls by adjusting the calipers to a fast, for taking a precise measurement of the skull’s width, height, and length. We did not include the fins of some of these skulls when measuring the width; because these will make the measurements and the Encephalization Quotient (EQ) inaccurate. After we had got the precise measurement of each one of them at a time, we used a tape measure to gauge the distance between the ends of the caliper and recorded all the measurements on the data sheet
In most kitchens the small flies that are found are Drosophila Melanogaster also called fruit fly. They are often brought in by ripened tomatoes, grapes and other perishable items from the garden. Drosophila melanogaster is a little two winged insect about 3mm long two winged insect that belongs to the Diptera, the order of the flies. The drosophila egg is about half a millimeter long. Fertilization takes about one day the embryo to develop and hatch into a worm-like larva. The larva eats and grows continuously, after two days as a third in star larva; it moults one more time to form an immobile pupa. Over the next four days, the body is completely remodeled to give the adult winged form, which then hatches from the pupal

Leishmania are digenetic. This means that it requires two hosts to complete it's life cycle. For leishmania the two hosts are an invertebrate and an vertibrate. The female sand fly is the invertebrate host. When the fly is infected, the leishmania are in promastigote form. A promastigote is extra cellular and mobile due to it's elongated flagellum. When they are injected into their vertebrate host they undergoe cellular differentiation into amastigote form. When they are amastigotes they are intracellular and they lose thier flagellum leaving
