Growing Through Reading “The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn the more places you’ll go,” says the famous author Dr. Seuss. In today’s culture though, many children spend great amounts of time staring at their personal devices or watching television. Children do not realize that reading provides a form of entertainment that proves not only educational but fun, too. Providing an exciting way to learn, books offer better entertainment than a movie, since books last longer than a movie because reading takes longer, as a result of this, they give more detail. The reader must use his imagination to create the characters and the setting in his mind. Movies do not allow the viewer to enhance their imagination because the movie scenes only show the characters and setting through the director’s eyes. Everyone’s mind differ than another and each person imagines things differently than another might. By reading books, people can stretch their own unique imagination. Additionally, movies may not portray the characters or setting in the way that the reader imagined it. When watching a movie, often the movie shows a scene differently than the reader thought and can ruin the book for the reader. For example, when I read J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, I had imagined the forest of Lothlorien as beautiful Elven buildings in a wonderful forest, but when I watched the movies, Lothlorien was large Elven houses built in the trees. As a result of watching the movies, my way of thinking of Lothlorien is ruined. Even though movies visually appeal to people, with the CG characters and special effects, they do not let you think about the characters and setting for yourself. Reading a book outranks watching a movie because books develop the imagination, they provide more backstory than a movie could and they last longer than a movie. Books engage the reader more than a movie, letting the reader think for themselves. A book provides more information to the story than a movie could, and the entertainment of a book last for days while a movie only last for a few hours. When I was younger, I did to not enjoy reading, but then I found genres that appealed more to me, and now I continue to devour books. When I read, I love “becoming” another person if only for a little while. Through reading, I have grown not only in spelling and vocabulary, but also in my own writing as well. Illiteracy remains a common in the world and, in the U.S many have the privilege to learn to read, but they waste that ability on simply watching television or staring at phone screens or other devices. God has given us the ability to read and write, so we should spend more time using that gift and appreciating the wonderful world of
