The purpose of this paper is to alert Dr. Dieu about the alarming lack of exposure that one particular student seems to have. The design of the curriculum is to gather critical thought and response from a diverse group of college students that potentially has had previous exposure to some of the great authors in history. The following is a description of the subject in question. Growing up in small, small towns in America – moving frequently and being the daughter of an unstable household, there was no exposure to literature. Not in the fantastical sense of great novels that imparted deep meaning, or fantastical journeys into the unknown, or made up worlds that paralleled the one humanity lives in. Thinking back, it causes wonder why none of the teachers ever assigned an actual book to read. And if they did, it was obviously so unimpressive that there is no memory of it happening. There were trips down the hall to the library, but interest was limited to finding a quiet spot to fade away from everyone else.
Obtaining a General Education Diploma and emancipation at 16 also did not lead to books. It led many places, but reading was certainly not on the list. Trade school was followed by an associate’s degree, which was full of textbooks, not literary genre. College led to marriage, which in turn, to children, which did lead to reading children’s books every night. Golden books - remember? Hosting a shiny gold spine and filled with magical tales of wisdom and fantastical imaginative adventures that would carry a child off to dream about their own. Therefore, this literary journey begins here, with this class. Which, causes fear of what is to come. Nevertheless, feeling inadequate and unprepared in the face of this quest, the saddle shall be mounted, the helmet donned, and the reigns held for dear life as this journey begins.
