Its 2017, we live in a world surrounded by technology and one of the leading innovations is the cell phone. No matter where you go you're bound to see at least one person on their phone. These technological advances are bringing us further in life but they are also taking away things that are important to us as a society. Some would say these devices are taking us two steps forward and one step back.

On September 8, 1974, President Gerald Ford delivered a speech that stunned the nation. Thirty days after former President Richard Nixon’s resignation from office due to the infamous Watergate scandal, President Ford chose to pardon him of any wrongdoing. This decision was extremely unpopular with the general public. For the most part, the public believed that Nixon needed to receive some form of punishment for his actions. President Ford knew this and delivered his speech in an attempt to explain his unpopular decision and quell the response. However, President Ford failed in his goal. While President Ford established his credibility and effectively appealed to the listener’s emotions, he failed to logically support his reasoning, relying too much an emotional appeal.

In 1974, President Richard Nixon announced his resignation. In response to this Vice President Gerald Ford spoke of his opinion on the situation. Nixon’s letter of resignation is a direct effect of the Watergate scandal, The purpose of these speeches is to make Ford look more trustworthy.

The Puritans lived a very strict, religious lifestyle. They believed that God worked in their daily lives. In a response to the Age of Enlightenment and people straying from the church, the Great Awakening began. A revitalization of religious piety swept through the colonies. Preachers taught that the people of the church were to trust their hearts over their minds and rely on biblical revelation, rather than human reason. One very memorable preacher is Jonathan Edwards, whose use of imagery encourages congregants to return to the church, especially in his best known sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”

Technological advances during the last fifty years of human history have given billions of people instant access to unprecedented communication methods. Individuals are no longer limited to letter writing and sending telegrams to convey a verbal message. E-mails, text messaging, video chat, instant messenger, and various social media outlets are all platforms for human communication in the modern world. One of the most significant communication devices to surface from the technological serge is the cellular telephone. Every individual with a cell phone has the ability to call any person, place, or agency at anytime as long as the individual is within the service provider's coverage area. The prevalence of cell phone owners has increased the use of cell phones in public places, such as schools, restaurants, and theaters, and their use in public is associated with both positive and negative implications. Some argue cell phones should be banned from public places because they are a social distraction, inhibit the user from being able to focus properly, and can cause safety concerns by interfering with airplanes and hospital equipment. Despite the negative impacts associated with cell phone use in public places, cell phones must be allowed in public for safety reasons, emergency scenarios, and to support the individual's right to personal freedom.

I have been the single most wanted electronic device since 1986. I make it easy to stay connected at all times with friends, news, and entertainment. I also cause 1.6 million automobile crashes each year. I am the number one gateway to porn, cyberbullying, and social misconduct. I am a phone. Cellular phones can be either distracting or essential. While driving, they could be deadly or navigational; in class, they could be distractions or educational tools; and behaviorally speaking, cell phones have negative impacts on young children.

The Total School Cluster Grouping (TSCG) model is a service delivery model that uses the strategies usually found in gifted programs and applies it to include the achievement and performance of all the students in a school. TSCG works well with the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) and the Renzulli’s Three-Ring Conception of Giftedness (Gentry and Fugate, 2013, p. 213). This model has a focus on the enhancement of “every students’ strengths, skills, and confidence, using grouping strategies and enriched curriculum” (Gentry and Fugate, 2013, p.213). Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school 's most easily accessible phone was on the complete other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could 've used to contact the authorities more quickly. Thesis: The usage of cell phones in modern day society has caused quite the problem for citizens in this generation by being a major distraction, causing addictions, and has sadly became the main resource of communication.

Did you know that the cancer government, the federal communications commission’s says that hundreds of millions of Americans uses cell phones, and cell phones can cause you to have brain tumors? Did you also know that both adults and children spend most of their time on phone? When using your phone, it might give you a neck problem because in respect to cancer, concern focuses on whether cell phones might increase the risk of brain tumors in the head and neck area. But let me tell you something, as many of us use our phones daily, do we ever stop and think it might affect our body? No because we are so into social media and playing games that we don’t have time to think that it’s going to affect us. People say that phones are safe and other say they aren’t. I say that they can be safe at some time it can also depend what you do, and how long you use it for. Therefore, many of us get distracted easily and it’s pretty hard to get back on track. In 1973, the first portable cell phone was discovered, due to the cause that cell phones may not be safe at some time cell phones are also very important because in case of an emergency you will have a device with you.

The effects of technology on society will always be a double edged sword. The debate is a never ending one, in which both sides have valid and compelling arguments. The Industrial Revolution reduced manual labor in the long run, but had negative consequences such as child labor and sweatshop conditions. Nuclear Power reduces the cost of producing energy, but raises serious environmental issues like pollution and radiation. In this day in age refusing to assimilate to at least some form of modern living is simply not an option. One invention causing controversy today that has yet to cease being alter, modified, and “improved” since its debut is the ever present cell phone.

Smartphones have become a part of everyone’s body. Almost everything can be done through smart phones. Paying bills, doing grocery, buying food, and more time consuming tasks can all be done almost instantly by smartphones. Many jobs and institutions today do not allow the use of smartphones during a certain time, especially schools. Prohibition of cell phones in school is a good idea to prevent students from getting distracted. However, high school students should be allowed to access their cell phones at school, because high school students are mature enough to use their cell phones productively and beneficially. Having access to internet is very important to high school students. Many students could not afford to have all kinds of devices, such as laptop, tablets, and cell phones. Entirely banning the usage of cell phones can make students hate the school causing them to be more arrogant.

It has been quite the adjustment not being able to see my baby sister whenever I want, however I am not as distraught as I assumed I would be. Watching you start a new school in a new city, with no familiar faces is an unbelievable challenge that you have conquered. While I do miss you dearly, seeing you thrive in your new environment has only made me proud. It reminds me of when you switched schools in the sixth grade and went to the Academy of Notre Dame instead of St. Patricks School. You were so excited and nervous to start this new chapter of your life, just like you were going into Drexel University.
