Mountain Vista’s High school class of 2017 was able to create and elective named Dog Therapy. Which would make Mountain Vista the only high school in the Douglas County schooling area to have a dog therapy “class”. But you won’t know until you are enrolled in the class is that you will have to go through many hours of training. To only reach a .25 credit and no letter grade on your transcript. Which is a huge misfortune, because you will put just as much work in this class as you would in any other class if not more. So with the guidance of my consoler and I, we decided to propose this to the Dougal county board and to the assistant principal. With the rest of the second semester I created a Dog Therapy class proposal, and got the green light from the …show more content…
The Dog Therapy program at vista has helped the students, and staff members deal with stress. Back in 2015 two teenaged girls had planned to shoot up mountain vista high school, I know a few of the students that were depressed because of this and many of the past and present teachers that had these two kids all started to have stress and depression. That is why a program like this need to be enacted in all high schools because a lot of students and teachers have dealt with or are dealing with depression. And a class like this will reduce stress and depression that is why I have been working so hard to get this to be an official class at mountain vista high school. We have had to go through many steps to get this program to become a real class, When we were first trying to get this to just be an elective we had to make sure that if you wanted to spend time with the dogs you would have a legal waiver signed by you and your parents. This would insure that if there was any incident where a student or staff member would be attacked by the dogs we would not be
The 12-year-olds of Seattle's Hazel Wolf K-8 Stem School, along with the Courthouse Dogs Foundation, believe that dogs possess an overwhelming calming effect on people, particularly the crime victims who are needed to go through the court system. These students are under Rose Palmer's class, which is known for establishing social projects every semester, and raising both awareness and funds for the Courthouse Dogs Foundation is the semester's call to action.
I think it was a great idea. It has helped me and my dog Charisma. After Charisma recovered she was not acting normal. After I brought her to your dog therapy she changed. Now she is normal and healthy again. This is also helping others, not just me. That is why I think your dog therapy was the best idea you’ve ever came up with! Thank you.
This story helped widen my views of Occupational Therapy. It gave me the insight that using specific tools or incentives are a good way to encourage a more difficult patient. I really enjoyed getting the feel of what a Occupational clinic is like. It was neat to know that it is common to have therapeutic pets in Occupational
“If the fake service dog scam continues to escalate, real service dogs, and the privileges and respect they are entitled to, will be in jeopardy.” (Lichtenberg). Service dogs are needed for people with PTSD, Disabilities, Clinical Depression and GAD. A lot of people rely on these wonderful animals to help them get through the day. For example, people who use dogs to help with depression ,what if they get into a bad mood and attempt suicide, the dog will get someone's attention or can even call 911. Soldiers with PTSD suffer from flashbacks and the dog can calm soldiers down and help them know what is real and not. They are not meant to help people who just want to take their dog into the store or have “stressful” or “bad” days. We all get those. Service dogs are beneficial to the world and save lives, you should not be able to just order a kit off the Internet to “license” your dog to be a service dog. Lives are at risk and its wrong to mock the need of a service dog.
Ever wondered why there are 5.9 million dogs in Canada alone? Although the constant barks of the dog down the street may be irritating, dogs have contributed to our well being more than most people realize. Weather they are volunteering with their owner to be a therapy dog, improving the mental health of someone with PTSD, or even pulling people out of danger, these trusted canines certainly have a credible history. To begin, the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program is accessible to people all over Nova Scotia.
There is a reason people say dogs are a man’s best friend. When I was younger, I was always afraid that some “bad guy” would break into my house. This fear caused me to have nightmares and lose sleep. Then I got a dog and I felt so much safer! Right now there is a case going to the Supreme Court to decide if service dogs should be allowed in schools. Service dogs should be allowed in schools because they help people with disabilities, they provide comfort to people, and because dogs are frequently used in fields of medicine. If I found comfort with a dog, so can students with disabilities.
Shouldn’t all animals have the right to live? Dogs could receive and give happiness if they were not put down. Animals do not really have a chance to actually live life. Many places simply do not have enough room for all of the animals, so they resort to euthanasia to control the population. There are many dogs and cats that are euthanized only because they take up room.
As a part of receiving a scholarship to attend Arkansas Tech University, I am require to volunteer 20 hours per semester. A few weeks back I volunteered at a new type of organization to help veterans suffering with PTSD. The organization is called Solder On Service Dogs (SOSD) located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The organization is relative new and was founded by Angie Pratt in September 2014. The Solder on Service Dogs website states that Pratt started the organization after a close relative, a Marine bomb technician, was injured in Afghanistan and began experiencing the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Pratt began searching for PTSD treatments and started to consider a service dog to help her relative. Pratt was not able to find any organizations that provided service dogs to help victims of PTSD. Solder On Service Dogs is the only organization of its kind in the state of Arkansas. The service dogs grow through a structured training program to respond to PTSD symptoms. The training programs as described on the Solder on Service Dogs website is designed to “detect seizures, disrupt nightmares, call 911, reduce need for medication, mitigate anxiety, reduce stress and change the quality of live for theses veterans and families.” I had the opportunity during my volunteer time to meet veterans with PTSD and observe
Dog aided therapy in a combat theater began in that same year. The dogs each had a value of $25,000 invested in them for their training process. The foremost service dogs underwent training for two years valued expensively at $25000 to $50000 per year (Ritchie and Amaker, 2012). The research focuses on investigating the significance and input of service dogs towards benefiting veterans and service members diagnosed with or at risk of PTSD. The impact and input service dogs offer to the service men and women deployed in
“Veterans report that service dogs help break their isolation. People will often avert their eyes when they see a wounded veteran. But when the veteran has a dog, the same people will come up and say, 'Hi' to pet the dog and then strike up a conversation.” This quote from United States Senator Al Franken is a shining example of the power that a service animal can have to improve the quality of life for those with special needs who have a service animal. Imagine!
My project did end up similar to what I planned in the beginning. I met my goal to learn as much as I could about therapy dogs but the piece of the project that didn’t turn up exactly how I expected was, again, the fact that I couldn’t get my dog a certification because of his age. This sort of wrecked my plans as far as bringing my dog into a nursing home myself. Looking back, I can only be grateful for a backup plan - my grandma’s dog, Shadow.
As a war veteran from two tours, Captain Montalvan suffered from significant PTSD as well as physical problems. Before he received Tuesday from the service dog training facility, ECAD, Captain Montalvan rarely went anywhere outside his New York City apartment or socialized. When he got Tuesday, the service dog was able to act as a barrier for the physically and mentally disabled soldier. Tuesday gave him the confidence to face to bustling subway and crowded sidewalks with only minor issues and eventually graduate from Columbia University. Like Captain Montalvan and Tuesday, service dogs do not erase all of their handler’s issues and handicaps, however, they significantly improve their quality of life.
Imagine you were in a hospital and your doctor mentions pet therapy and you decide to try it out. Your doctor arranges for you to meet with someone in the morning to tell you all about it. Soon after that, a dog and its handler visit you in your room and you are invited to pet the dog, play with it, and ask questions to the owner. After the visit you realize you're smiling, less tired, and more optimistic, and you can't wait to tell your friends and family about it, and can't wait for tomorrow to see the dog again. This is called pet therapy. Because pet therapy is popular today people should understand the physical, mental, and social benefits before making a decision.
Every animal has their own level of intelligence, take a rat for example, they are extremely intelligent and are capable of learning quickly. All throughout this paper, I will talk about what tools to use and how to train dogs, cats ferrets, rats, and even Monkeys. Most animals that we are able to have as a pet are trainable but not all.
