Journal Article Review: Do Dogs Resemble Their Owners?
The two main things being studied in this article are dogs and their owners. The researchers that conducted this study, Michael M. Roy and Nicholas J.S. Christenfeld, tried to see if dogs and their owners look alike and if they do look alike, what makes them look alike. Does an owner pick a pet based on what he/she looks like? Would more owners resemble purebreds or non-purebreds? Michael M. Roy and Nicholas J.S. Christenfeld believed going into the experiment that “A non-purebred puppy’s final appearance is unpredictable, and so the resemblance between owner and dog should be confined to the much more predictable purebreds.” (361). The experiment

The experiment conducted involved forty-five dogs and their owners. The dogs and their owners split into groups of fifteen and then were photographed at three different parks. The background for the photographs of the dogs and the owners were different so that the judges that were trying to match the dogs and their owners would not match them only on the background. The photos of the women and men in the experiment showed them from the waist up and the dogs were photographed facing forward and it showed the whole dog. “Overall, there were 25 purebred dogs and 20 non-purebreds” (362). After the photos were completed, the twenty-eight judges were shown the fifteen owners from one park. The judges were then given two different dogs and asked which one best represented the owner. Dogs may be a mans best friend, but their waste is not. For the residents of One Brooklyn Bridge Park Condominiums, their ongoing matter of waste layering all parts of where they call home has become an epidemic. Having to indoor walking through corridors and lobbies littered with feces, urine, and other dog waste on a daily basis has caused extreme discomfort among residents, as well as being exceedingly expensive and time consuming to clean. As a response to this persistent problem the board has decided to implement an ordinance that all dogs living in the building must have their DNA registered. Through a service called Poo Prints the board can send register each dogs DNA and send in samples of waste for DNA testing. Then the board can discover
Thus, there is no evidence shown that support Hoogland original prediction (stated in the former paragraph). Michener and Murie (1983) also argue that Hoogland’s grounded assumption is on outdated information. Hoogland refutes Michener and Murie (1983) argument by stating that the direct relationship between helper size and long-term reproductive success of females is an assumption; thus, it should not solely decide if black-tailed prairie dogs are cooperative breeders (Hoogland 1983). I find Hoogland’s last argument inadequate because he creates a prediction based off statistics that do not support black-tailed prairie dogs having an increased success from having more helpers. Although it is acceptable, it does not support his argument; and, consequently, taken advantage of by fellow researchers. The determination if black-tailed prairie dogs are cooperative breeders needs further research on the females’ long-term reproductive success. These are only a few of the examples that occur in this
This article describes the black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys Ludovocianus) and their coteries (polygynous social groups). In these groups, the one adult male reproducing genetically similar females. The main purpose that the author (John L. Hoogland) tries to convey and support his earlier work on prairie dogs. In this summary, there is several references to his earlier work, called Analysis of the Mating System in the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog (AMSBTPD). These prairie dogs exist where some females and pups (yearlings) within the coteries do not breed. Moreover, they behave parentally towards non-offspring. In addition, the Hoogland classified black-tailed prairie dogs as cooperative breeders; however, they “do not assist breeders to the same
Some of these dogs are so similar in appearance not even the experienced eye can tell them apart.
Lastly, Pedersen’s article does not hold enough personal testimony as evidence to help the reader believe her argument. Personal testimony is important in an argumentative piece to help the writer seem reasonable and understanding of the topic they are discussing. The author, April Pedersen tries to create personal testimony by stating, “It's fine to enjoy a pet. I’ve had several myself, including a cat that lived eighteen year” (Metz 242). The writer is obviously trying to reach out to readers as reasonable at the end of the article to help develop a strong ending argument. However, this completely fails because the author claims she had a cat instead of having a dog. Personal testimony is also known as important by the writer in the scholarly
The study I will be conducting is to modify my dog’s behavior. The data that I am obtaining, will come from me observing my dog. Within this study, I am hoping to decrease my dog's bad behaviors such as tearing up my personal belongings which could vary from shoes to destroying furniture. The subject is a one year old male Australian Shepherd mixed with Dachshund. He has a unique color scheme consisting of mainly black and white with a hint of brown. Considering the variety of colors found in his coat, I created the name, Storm. I live in an apartment complex, therefore the subject is an inside dog and only goes out to use the restroom. The subject is a happy and healthy dog, who is up to date on all shots.
Three experiments were conducted to illustrate that Chimpanzees could discriminate between appearance and reality. Chimpanzees were the chosen subjects because they are our closest relatives, and there is evidence that chimpanzees can check their appearances and recognize themselves in mirrors.
Major gift requires that the staff meets several times, this way the leader may delegate tasks, equally, the manager keeps track of assignment, training and volunteers. It is recommended that the executive director and managers from different departments develop skills to feel comfortable asking for donations. Overall, the agency’s personnel should be trained as fundraisers, thus they can help to raise contributions. Staff should be prepared to contact and solicit sponsors. It is an effective strategy to personally contact sponsors. Hight level of sponsorships is considered after the agency has grown a relationship (Weinstein, 2009).
What are some ways communication help train animals? The first way communication helps train animals is explained by Sara F. Shacter in her passage, “ Animals and Their Trainers: A Good Team” She writes about how to help animals to speak with people and to teach them not to be aggressive and behave. Finally, Jean Craighead George talks about how to teach your dog manners in “Excerpt from How to Talk to Your Dog”. To conclude, that is some ways communication can train animals.
Imagine a world where people were based off their race, family, religion or whatever makes them different. Imagine a world that bases you off of that information and bans you from somewhere or something just because of a stereotype. I know this might sound strange but instead of people replace those with dogs and instead of race or religion its breeds. ”Dangerous” dog breeds such as pit bulls, rottweilers, and even german shepherds have been suffering from these stereotypes because people believe they are too treacherous to live in the same place as them. I believe that these “Treacherous” dog breeds should not be judged because on most occasion it is the owner who trained them to be aggressive or to protect and they were breed to be family dogs but that all changed when people started using them for wrong.
Dogs reacted the same way an infant or a chimpanzee would react without their mother and for a dog was its owner. By doing the experiment on dogs and their owners, experimenters were able to conclude that dogs were emotionally attached to their owners. Therefore, we can conclude since the results are of those like infants, babies form an emotional bond with their caretaker which eventually turns into an attachment bond with their loved one. Babies tend to cry while dogs scratch the door and whine wanting their loved one or owner. Identifying dog behavior helps us identify our own abilities and experiences that affect our behavior. We can utilize the test done upon the dogs to advance the transition of an emotional bond to an attachment bond as the infant grows. The test however concluded that it was separation anxiety that caused the whining and the scratching on the door. What about the baby? The information and results that came from the experiment can help us advance upon the baby and their feelings towards the mother. Dogs tend to act like people but do they think and act like a human? They have the characteristics of acting like a human because their owners have instilled their values into their upbringing. Just like an infant, the early stages are the most important to lay the foundation that will pave the way for the rest of their lives. As for a dog, the way we treat and teach them, they will act, there is no breed that is born aggressive, the dog is dependant on the upbringing of the owner. Infants still have the capability of saying no and not tend to respect their parents as would a
As the owner of three unique pups, I know that dogs’ variances are numerous. Any one who owns a dog knows that it has a mind of its own, and therefore a unique personality. Having had many dogs throughout my life, I have found that dogs fit into three classifications.
To start off, sodium nitrate is considered more soluble than sodium chloride. To start off the experiment, a test tube is filled with exactly 10 mL of water. With a scooper, add one scoop of sodium chloride and put a rubber stopper on the top of the test tube. Shake the test tube until you no longer see substances at the bottom. Repeat the steps for the sodium chloride until the solution is no longer soluble and there is still some at the bottom. Before the lab began, the amount of sodium chloride in the container weighed 70.5 grams. After adding all four scoops of sodium chloride it was not longer soluble. After adding the four scoops, the container weighed 67.6 grams and the amount of the sodium chloride that was used was 2.9 grams. Next
Dog breeding is dangerous because to make a perfect dog they too often inbreed and cause birth defects and other health issues in dogs. Terry Allen, an “In These Times” senior editor who has written the magazine’s monthly investigative health and science column since 2006, argues in “We’re Breeding Dogs to Death” that “neither price, pedigree nor being loved like a member of the family can shield a dog from the pain, breathing difficulties, cancer, panoply of debilitating genetic disorders, mental illness, crippling physiognomy and shortened life span that disproportionately plague purebreds.” The article “Selective Breeding or Artificial Selection” explains that in dogs, the “frequency of being homozygous for rare recessive disorders increases when inbreeding occurs, potentially causing severe
“Art is never finished, only abandoned.” This is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous quotes. I personally find it appealing and memorizing. This is 100% true as well! Nothing in life is ever truly finished! Leonardo da Vinci was pure genius, however not just from his quotes. He did much, much, more!
