Lenoir City High School is one of many schools in the country that has recently switched to using laptops for educational purposes. People say that mixing one-to-one technology and school is a really good benefit; however, others say that it is a bad idea that can harm student learning. Technology can help them, but at the same time not. One-to-one technology harms student learning because it is distracting and causes them not to process the information as well as they would write it by hand. One reason technology harms student learning is by distracting the learner and those around them. A student can distract the people around him/her by opening other tabs while in the middle of a lesson. According to “Screen or Scribble?”, “The glut of laptops has brought a world of distractions to class; students can now get lost online with ease that would once have been considered unfathomable” (O’kane). Having a lot of notes are important, but having a lot and not being able to understand the information can really affect their learning. Doubek states, “ And a study has shown that the fact you have to be slower when you take notes by hand is what makes it more useful in the long run.” This shows that it is better for them to write their notes by hand because it can help them later on. Doubek also included, “The benefits of being able to look at your more complete, transcribed notes on a laptop outweigh the drawbacks of not processing that information. On the other hand, when writing longhand, you process the information better but have less to look back at.” The quote explains while the notes the take on the computer are longer and more detailed, the notes they write by hand help them process the information
I think the argument that Cindi May is trying to convey within this article is extremely important for young adults to understand. Taking notes is a skill that students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. The article specifies that Pam Mueller had conducted an experiment with students who took notes by hand and those who typed them out using a laptop. The study showed that students who had used a laptop actually ended up taking more notes, however, it didn't help with their comprehension of the material. The students who wrote their notes out had a much better conceptual understanding of the material they were being tested on.

In the article Attention, Students: Put Your Laptops Away by NPR gives the evidence that taking notes by hand helps you retain the information better than transcribing them on a computer. The went on to present the findings of a study by Mueller and Oppenheimer, two college professors. The professors write “ This is suggestive evidence that longhand notes may have a superior external storage as well as superior encoding functions” (NPR, 2). This clearly suggests that their findings lead to the conclusion that longhand notes are more successful. With the new one to one initiative at Seaman High School multiple students have taken favor to typing notes rather than writing their notes down. Scientific studies have shown that writing down notes helps students learn since they are “… forced to be more selective — because you can't write as fast as you can type” writes Pam Mueller, a psychological scientist. Muller has led a study researching the effects that typing notes has on a student’s learning; her findings indicated “… that even when laptops are used as intended… they may still be harming academic performance” (APS 1). One student reported typing notes for an entire class period, only to realize, at the conclusion of class, that he did not fully grasp what the lesson was (APS 1).
When i’m not using technology I can focus and concentrate on content. Being able to focus can make the class more engaging and improve grades. Nicholas Carr stated that “ When we use our cellphones and our computer all the time we are always distracted.” Without technology we can be focused on the content we are studying and get more accomplished.”
This idea that the physical action of such seemingly meaningless tasks makes me want to leave my phone aside for the few hours I spend at school, learning and enriching my mind. These articles have clarified for me that the negative outcomes of technology in learning prevent my mind from absorbing knowledge. My academic work, whether it be in high school or college, will constantly deteriote if I let technology overpower my ability to think and learn. It is not even the fact that the use of technology will probably lower my grades, but the possibility of not growing or learning makes me realize that the consequences of technology use in the classrom are some that I will avoid and prevent by allowing myself to use my senses and knowledge to gain new ideas and experiences. Today, many campuses offer free Wi-Fi internet access in all classrooms. However, students abuse the advantage of Wi-Fi internet availability and misuse their laptops in ways that prevents them to engage and concentrate in class. Carrie B. Fried’s points out that although her research demonstrated that laptops are an effective learning tool, there was more suggestive evidence to ban laptops in class because they detract students from learning. Based on her research results, she concluded that students learning are negatively related to in-class laptop use because students spent “considerable time multitasking and that laptop use posed a significant distraction to both users and fellow students” (Computers and Technologies Journal). With Wi-Fi networks, it allows students to use the internet and do non-course related activities: check emails, play online games, visit social media networks such as Facebook and Blogger, and instant message other friends inside and outside of their current classroom. Students performing non course related activities on their laptops distract their fellow classmates as well. A student who misuses their laptop hinders their own learning as well as the learning of peers who are using their laptops appropriately. A student watching a comedy and smiling can distract another classmates’ learning and the disrespect the professor who is struggling to teach.
Transferring the teaching method from out of the textbook to laptops can be very distracting. Of course all electronic devices come with games or at least some application you can download. The Students will be able to access many apps including; games, email, social media, and instant messaging classmates (Hurst). Even without this change, students are already constantly on their phones texting or playing games during classes. Do we really want to have more distractions?
Thousands of websites are distracting students from studying time. In an experiment at Cornell University, students who used internet-connected laptops during a lecture did much worse on a subsequent test than students who did not use the internet (Carr, 2010). It indicated that using the internet in class impacts students’ attention span (2010). Distractions can take attention away from learning. In fact, using the internet does not promote study efficiency, but wastes time.
Another way the computers hurts a student is by hurting their capability to focus on study while working through a computer. Teens tend to have very playful mind and it’s already hard for them to focus on boring thing like study. So when they are in front of the computer screen, how can you expect them to pay their 100 percent attention to study? Plus they have the Internet and growing social media uses and gaming just lights up the fire more. So, why we allow them to be in front of the computer for study? Is that become so impossible to make the kids study without the use of a computer?

(University Wire 2016) Also, proofreading abilities are reduced on typed work, possibly due to the over usage of tools such as grammar and spelling check.
