Discrimination For many years discrimination has been occurring and it doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon . Discrimination really hit it's peak when hitler started killing people for their ethnicity. If you were German during the holocaust you were going to get sent to a concentration camp to die no matter what age you were. Discrimination is when someone gets picked out for something that they can't control such as race , gender , or hair color. It has occurred in these examples: Of Mice and Men , holocaust times , and To Kill a Mockingbird. Of Mice and Men uses discrimination in many ways one of them being making Crooks stay in the barn because of his skin color. Crooks refers to himself as a “nigger “ in many circumstances
Crooks, the African American stable hand of the Tyler ranch, was discriminated for his skin color and could not imagine his dreams would ever to come true because of it. Crooks grew up on his father’s ranch with his brothers and they were happy. He worked hard for his American Dream of eventually living off the ‘fat of the land’ with George and Lennie. Crooks' home is, a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn “This suggests that he is isolated from the other men and treated like the animals he cares for and as such is made to live with them” (“Effects of Segregation and Racism in Of Mice and Men Chapter 4”). He came to the quick realization that it is impossible to go along with George and Lennie and he does not see any dream with white men possible.
One of the major themes in Of Mice and Men is how the characters respond to discrimination. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex (website). Mostly all of the ranch hands are discriminated for the reason that they are poor, homeless, labourers. As stated in chapter 3, “After a long time they get mean. They get wantin’ to fight all the time.” Clearly this discrimination has a negative effect on their behaviors. Out of all the characters Crooks and Curly’s wife were discriminated against the most. Crooks for his age, is isolated in the barn to live alone with only a
In Of Mice of Men, John Steinbeck presents the theme that Crooks is upset because he is discriminated against using diction and dialogue throughout chapter four. Steinbeck explores Crooks’ feelings about life as a black man during the time when Crooks is encountered by Lennie. Crooks explains that “ [He] ain’t wanted in the bunk house”... and “ can’t play because … [He’s] black.” (Steinbeck 68) because of this he was alone while everyone else went out to
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Crooks is discriminated against unfairly not due to his character but because of his skin. Cooks from John Steibecks Of Mice and Men is a black man living on a ranch in a time where black people are hated for their color. It’s no different where Crooks live. Crooks was given his own room because the other white men in the bunk house didn’t like him around.
John Steinbeck has written 27 books and I have only read one, Of Mice and Men. It is a good book with a great hook and ends with an unexpected bang. In of Mice and Men the main characters have different levels of struggles. One way more than the other but everyone has to do things and deal with things that they don’t want to do. One of those things is to deal with discrimination. Discrimination shapes a way a person acts around other people.
African-Americans from the south started to migrate north as the economic crisis worsened. Steinbeck's representation of racism in Of Mice and Men is readily available through language and the aspects of various characters. In the story, Steinbeck shows the discrimination imposed on individuals such as Crooks and how other characters speak and act towards him just because of his skin color. For example, “Crooks, the negro stable buck had his bunk in the harness room, a little white shed that leaned off the wall of the barn,” (Steinbeck 66). This quote shows the racism undertones that the setting imposes on Crooks. Diction is used to dehumanize him when they describe Crooks as a “negro” and classify him based on his skin color. On a similar note, the fact that Crooks lives in a small storage room separated from the other workers symbolizes the physical disconnect and harsh segregation that he faces each and everyday. Conditions of discrimination represented in the novella are very accurate from a historical standpoint. As shown in the story, African-Americans are migrating to places other than the south. For example, the story takes place in California, and in the past, the black population was only prevalent in southern societies. But as seen in the book and in American history, African-Americans are now seen all over the United States,
In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men characters in the novel are segregated by sex, race, age, physical and mental disabilities. John Steinbeck portrays the intolerance and bigotry of 1930’s America through the separation of his characters based on their handicaps. Lennie, Candy, Candy’s dog, Curley’s wife and Crooks all face social pressure from the other characters on the ranch based on their intelligence, physical disability, age, sex and color. Stereotyping based on ethnic or physical characteristics is typical to the 1930’s depression where civil rights for minority groups had not yet been addressed. Almost all of the characters who, in
The tale takes place around 1937, a time when both women, and african americans were still fighting for total equality. In Of Mice and Men, this is clearly shown by the treatment of Crooks, an african american man that works on the ranch, and Curley’s wife, a young woman married to one of the workers that lives on the ranch. Both of these characters face hardships due to their race or gender. Crooks deals with segregation on the ranch by being separated from the other workers due to the color of his skin. He is referred to as “the negro” or “nigger” by his fellow workers, and is rarely ever spoken to.
All of the characters in Of Mice and Men are different, in some ways they could be discriminated for it. Lennie, is mentally ill, when he gets to the ranch he found a job at, his partner, George, tells him “You ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing.” (Steinbeck, 6) later being called “...the crazy bastard you are...” (Steinbeck, 6). This shows lennie cannot be trusted with anything. He is incapable of thinking for himself, He can only take orders. Another heavily discriminated character is Crooks the stable buck. He has been called “nigger” countless times and says “ This is just a nigger talkin’, an’ a busted-back nigger,” (Steinbeck, 71) and “ S’pose you had to sit out here an’ read books. Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you got to read books. Books ain't no good” (Steinbeck 72). Crooks has been discriminated to the point of loneliness. He gets to play horseshoes but other than that he sits by himself only being able to talk to himself or self-educate himself. As a
“Listen to me, you crazy bastard,” “Don 't you even take a look at the bitch. In the book “Mice and Men” People in the story uses mean phases and words to use against people that is not the same as them or that does not look like them.In the quote it shines light on how people treat each other during the book and on how they act when they are near each other. In John Steinbeck 's Novel Of Mice and Men, the author illustrate that people discriminate against one another because they want to feel better of themselves and to gain self pride.
Discrimination against: The ultimate payback African Americans have been discriminated as far as time can go back. Their lives had been miserable for years, and it has been a struggle due to all the discrimination they have to face. In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, every character has someone to talk to and socialize with on the ranch. Some would say that the relationships that the workers have with each other are the only type of “family” or communication that they have to talk to. For black ranch workers that was different.
The main victim of racism in Of Mice and Men, is Crooks. Crooks is a black man and he does not live in the bunkhouse like all the other white ranch workers. This kind of behaviour was very present in the 1930’s. In the Jim Crow law, it shows that white and coloured people should not live in the same area. John Steinbeck portrayed this law very well because in a few quotes, it should how Crooks lives in a separate area. ““I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room”” and ““Why you ain’t wanted?” Lennie asked. “Cause i’m black”” From these examples, it is clear that Crooks lives separately from the white workers. He is forced to live in the stable with the horses instead of with the others in the bunkhouse. The second example of racism is the fact that the other workers always called him names and made him feel worthless. This is how most black men were treated in the 1930’s. “Sure. Ya see the stable buck’s a nigger” In this quote, it is shown how the other workers call him derogatory names used to describe coloured people. “If I say something, why it’s just a nigger sayin’ it” This quote demonstrates how Crooks is aware that his opinions do not matter to the others because he has a different skin colour. Also, he is referred to as “Crooks” because his back is crooked from being kicked by a horse. The third example of racism is about how Crooks had a negative mindset about his goals and dreams. This
Unfortunately due to our past history, discrimination had been among us from since decades. Discrimination and prejudice would probably be among us until the end of the world. Prejudice and discrimination is an action that treats people unfairly because of their membership in a particular social group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs to rather on that individual. It is an unfair treatment to a person, racial group, and minority. It is an action based on prejudice.
Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Blacks are constantly discriminated because of their skin color and are stereotype into criminals and gangbangers. Which predisposed other races to view them as criminal this is why discrimination must come to an end.
Discrimination towards people who are considered "different" has always been present through out history. Whether it is because of somebody's race, skin color, language or disability discrimination does not seem to vanish. People are pointed out of a group for being different or as better said not meeting the requirements of what is considered better or normal to society. Through out history several examples can be found that prove how discrimination has led entire groups to degrade and humiliate others for being different from them. Examples of this include the Europeans forcing Native Americans out of their land and committing inhumane acts towards them. The enslavement of African Americans is also an important representation
