Inequality is an important issue in today's society. Many people discriminate others of different cultures, gender, sex, race, etc. The problem now is less present but in the 20th century, it was prevalent. Inequality and discrimination is a big part in John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. In the novel, there are a few considerable concepts explored but the main one I will be talking about is inequality. The three main examples of inequality that are present and that I will be talking about is sexism, racism, discrimination against people with disabilities. This concept is present throughout the whole novel.
One example of inequality is sexism. The main victim of sexism in this story is Curley's wife. First of all, in the story she is

The main victim of racism in Of Mice and Men, is Crooks. Crooks is a black man and he does not live in the bunkhouse like all the other white ranch workers. This kind of behaviour was very present in the 1930’s. In the Jim Crow law, it shows that white and coloured people should not live in the same area. John Steinbeck portrayed this law very well because in a few quotes, it should how Crooks lives in a separate area. ““I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room”” and ““Why you ain’t wanted?” Lennie asked. “Cause i’m black”” From these examples, it is clear that Crooks lives separately from the white workers. He is forced to live in the stable with the horses instead of with the others in the bunkhouse. The second example of racism is the fact that the other workers always called him names and made him feel worthless. This is how most black men were treated in the 1930’s. “Sure. Ya see the stable buck’s a nigger” In this quote, it is shown how the other workers call him derogatory names used to describe coloured people. “If I say something, why it’s just a nigger sayin’ it” This quote demonstrates how Crooks is aware that his opinions do not matter to the others because he has a different skin colour. Also, he is referred to as “Crooks” because his back is crooked from being kicked by a horse. The third example of racism is about how Crooks had a negative mindset about his goals and dreams. This
Crooks, the African American stable hand of the Tyler ranch, was discriminated for his skin color and could not imagine his dreams would ever to come true because of it. Crooks grew up on his father’s ranch with his brothers and they were happy. He worked hard for his American Dream of eventually living off the ‘fat of the land’ with George and Lennie. Crooks' home is, a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn “This suggests that he is isolated from the other men and treated like the animals he cares for and as such is made to live with them” (“Effects of Segregation and Racism in Of Mice and Men Chapter 4”). He came to the quick realization that it is impossible to go along with George and Lennie and he does not see any dream with white men possible.
In Jill Lepore's essay, she will build an irrefutable argument about inequality in America. Describing in detail the quandaries it has caused U.S. citizens. She will provide facts about the trepidation that inequality has founded in our own backyard. Jill Lepore's use of logical, ethical and characteristic anecdotes is profound and extensive.
Even though how they use to treat them back then when the story was written, the discrimination of the theme throughout the book, because it illustrated the injustice inflicted upon the moment in the story the discrimination of people with mental and physical disabilities. To prove the discrimination is that some of them have either one hand or a bad back that can't be fixed. Curley's wife is not to do anything because she is married to curley the boss's son that she can only talk to. So there are some examples of the discrimination in the book.
Discrimination have been happening everywhere in the world and as long as anyone can remember. Discrimination is still a problem today. America just had protests dealing with Black Lives Matter and African Americans feel they are still discriminated against and treated differently. The time that the novel Of Mice and Men takes place in is important because during the Great Depression it was hard to find money, so Lennie couldn’t just stay at home while George had to work. They both had to make money to support themselves. Lennie, Crooks, and Curley's wife all face discrimination which greatly impacts their lives.
Of Mice and Men is set in 1930’s America in the middle of the economic depression. It is geared towards the pursuit of the American dream, promoting the ideas of equality, life, liberty and happiness. Steinbeck uses Crooks, and to some extent Curley’s wife to challenge the perception of equality and sometimes the language used is, by modern standards, racist and misogynistic. There is an irony in the fact that the people judging Crooks are less intelligent than he is and they refuse to look at anything other than the stereotype of his ethnicity. Steinbeck reveals as much about
African-Americans from the south started to migrate north as the economic crisis worsened. Steinbeck's representation of racism in Of Mice and Men is readily available through language and the aspects of various characters. In the story, Steinbeck shows the discrimination imposed on individuals such as Crooks and how other characters speak and act towards him just because of his skin color. For example, “Crooks, the negro stable buck had his bunk in the harness room, a little white shed that leaned off the wall of the barn,” (Steinbeck 66). This quote shows the racism undertones that the setting imposes on Crooks. Diction is used to dehumanize him when they describe Crooks as a “negro” and classify him based on his skin color. On a similar note, the fact that Crooks lives in a small storage room separated from the other workers symbolizes the physical disconnect and harsh segregation that he faces each and everyday. Conditions of discrimination represented in the novella are very accurate from a historical standpoint. As shown in the story, African-Americans are migrating to places other than the south. For example, the story takes place in California, and in the past, the black population was only prevalent in southern societies. But as seen in the book and in American history, African-Americans are now seen all over the United States,
In the literary work Of Mice and Men, the reader is introduced to the ranch as a world of its own, within which prejudice plays a significant part. The characters in this novel act as a community in a world of their own, having no connections to any other type of society. A strong point, enforced through many examples in the book, is the constant ability of the stronger to overcome the weaker. The prejudices of the majority towards the minority, at the ranch are the white-males, who retain power over the lesser groups of people. This inequality, as well as the influence of the time period, causes discrimination against people of color, women, and those that are disabled, either mentally or physically.
“Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts.” This quote, once said by E. B. White, excellently states what the novel, Of Mice and Men, is trying to clearly state. Of Mice and Men is a profound novel that has many things to teach society. This novel, written by John Steinbeck, reflects many flaws in the world today. It mirrors many of the characteristics that every human possesses. Prejudice is still a common way of thinking in today’s society, and to the people who feel victimized, it can be hard to overcome. Curley’s wife, Lennie, and Crooks all deal with prejudice against themselves different ways.
Discrimination if often based on many qualities and abilities. Some of the most clearly shown examples in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men are gender, age and racial discrimination. The victims of these types of discrimination are Curley’s wife, who is unhappy and bitter about her life, Candy, the old, disabled swamper and Crooks, the black stable buck. Throughout the novel, these three characters face many hardships because they are harshly judged and often misunderstood.
At this time in America’s history, blacks were still not treated as an equal. For example, the men on the ranch treat Crooks, a black stable buck, more like an animal than a person. Steinbeck points out, “ I [Crooks] ain’t wanted ‘cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink” (68).
Equality has been a hot topic in the past century. Women and African-Americans have not had equality for that long. Women gained quality in the 1920s and African-Americans gained equality in the 1960s. It took them a lot of time to get those rights and dream in Of Mice and Men, show equality must be worked for. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck utilizes the characters of Crooks and Curley’s wife to illustrate that equality takes a long time to come by.
In the novella, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, two characters, Crooks and Curley’s wife, help me understand the message ‘Discrimination isolates people’. The book takes place in Soledad, California, mid 1930’s, during the Great Depression, at a time when discrimination of skin colour and gender plagued America.
The 1930’s was a time period in which discrimination played a vital role in the lives of minorities. In the 1930’s, men were in search for jobs on the ranches and women were generally working inside the house. Although the 1930’s seems pretty far back, discrimination still occurs in society today and can either be intentional or nonintentional. There are several different forms of discrimination: racial, disabled, age, and sexual. Any type of discrimination is harmful to the individual and often times leaves them feeling alienated and lonely. All of these types of discrimination are seen in the characters of John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. Past history of discrimination has influenced him to display it in his novel. Each person’s type
Inequality is a theme that runs throughout all of history. Harper Lee uses the theme of inequality in her book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson must deal with inequality when he is accused of a crime he didn’t commit because no one will trust a black man over a white man. The Cunningham family must face discrimination because of their lack of money. Scout even faces inequality when she tries to play with Jem and Dill. The theme of inequality is a strong one in Lee’s book, and her use of inequality doesn’t only define racism, but also discrimination based on wealth and gender.
Gender discrimination mostly affects women. People think that since they are women they are less than men. In the novel Curley’s wife is discriminated against because she is a woman. She is usually alone because she is perceive as an evil woman and promiscuous. People don’t think that she can do anything that a man can do because she is a woman. It affects her by making her lonely. She is all cooped up in the house and never has anyone to talk to except for Curley who she doesn’t like. She responds to this discrimination by going out and talking to the men and stirring up things. If affects George and Lennie’s lives because she talks to Lennie and he accidently kills her. This messes up the guy’s plans to go out and get a little place. Her actions affected the story because she prevented the guys
