Disconnected Film Analysis

Based off Charles Webb’s 1963 novel by the same name, The Graduate is an American romantic comedy/drama released in the United States on December 21, 1967 starring Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, and William Daniels. The film was directed by Mike Nichols, produced by Lawrence Turman and the screenplay written by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham. The film was produced by Lawrence Turman/Mike Nichols productions starting in March of 1967. Mike Nichols has also directed other well known films such as Catch-22 (1970), Working Girl (1988), and more recently Closer (2004). The film was distributed by AVCO Embassy Pictures nationally and United Artists internationally. AVCO Embassy Pictures studio, founded by Joseph E. Levine, the films executive producer, also claims production/distribution for other hit films such as Godzilla, King of Monsters! (1956), The Fog (1980), and Prom Night (1980). The movie was well received due to its $104 million dollar box office opening tab. The score was produced by Dave Grusin and the songs written by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

For the second film assignment, I decided to pick Higher Learning as my movie to analyze. Higher Learning follows the journey of Malik, Kristen, Remy and their group of friends at Columbus University. Malik is an African American student joining on a partial track scholarship, while Kristen is a young lady entering the college from California. Lastly, Remy is a disordered young fellow from Idaho. Each student faces their own individual, political and racial dilemma at the university as the campus life causes problems for everyone.

The Frontline film Separate and Unequal discussed about creating a new school system; however, there are opposition by others who wants to maintain the current school system. If we look at the perspectives of the two groups, it is understandable in why there is support and opposition from the people of the city. The supporters of the new system wants a system that can provide better opportunities for their children without any violence. As the film claimed “the school was not teaching and were only babysitting the children”, which was likely a reason why there was a need for a new school system. Based on Laura Hillenbrand’s 2010 best seller, the film Unbroken is an inspiring, three-time Oscar nominated, World War II biography that tells the story of a young man, Louis Zamperini (played by Jack O’Connell), enduring the unimaginable brutalities of war. Directed by Angelina Jolie and produced by Erwin Stoff, this film is a story of survival, resilience, and redemption. Although this movie has some tear-jerking moments and a few memorable quotes, it seems to have fallen flat when it comes to the emotional aspect of the lead character’s experience.

In his directorial debut, Jordan Peele steers away from his comedic reputation to make the suspenseful thriller that is Get Out. The film is very intriguing and keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat throughout from start to finish as you follow Chris Washington, a young african american man, who travels with his white girlfriend to her family’s house when he uncovers a dark secret. For the typical fan of horror/thriller, it's a must see.

Broken On All Sides is a riveting documentary serving to address the thorny issue of racial inequality within the United States’ criminal justice infrastructure. It elucidates on its devastating resultant consequences (Alexander, 2012). While it may be an excellent resource to use in motivating, empowering or educating a group, community or organization, it raises real, damning questions about how the ripple effect of a defective system presents a significant adverse effect on the country at large.

In a ground breaking documentary, that gained rotten tomatoes of 93%, The Hunting Ground, displays a monumental depiction of the rape culture on college campuses. This film spread like while fire and was highly talked about among college campuses. The documentary captures real life survivors known as “degraduates” because they are seeking not only their degree but justice (Dick et. al., 2016, p. 4). Some of the victims feel that justice still has not been served, which brings upon devastation on not only the victim but the victim’s families.

In his 2017 horror film Get Out, Jordan Peele not only makes his director debut, but delivers a particularly insightful view into the state of racial affairs in modern America.The stories narrative follows an African American man named Chris, who goes to visit his white girlfriend's parents at their rural home only to uncover a horrifying plot in which the girlfriend and her parents are in fact racist and have been abducting black people and using their bodies in medical experiments involving the transfer of consciousness. On a surface level, the plot of the film has the ability to come across as quite simplistic in scope, an obvious labeling of privileged American whites as racist; however, a deeper analysis reveals careful consideration to

Film- Precious Knowledge Precious Knowledge is a documentary that takes place in Tucson, Arizona and focuses on how the Unified School district wants to completely ban the Mexican American Studies Program. In the film there were many scenes with examples of rhetorical appeal. I believe that the way the film was set up since the beginning had an impactful and direct emotional appeal on the audience. For instance, in the first scenes of the film we have the opportunity to get to know the main characters in a more intimate level.

Get Out is a film by Jordan Peele, which was release on February 24, 2017. Get Out is a social thriller, which follows an interracial couple, Rose and Chris. Chris and Rose take a weekend to visit her family, the Armitage family, home in a isolated area surrounded by a forest. The plot spirals out of control following many disturbing discoveries by Chris and in turn, Chris must get out of the Armitage household.

The concept art imitates life is crucial to film directors who express their views on political and social issues in film. In regard to film studies, race is a topic rare in many films. Like America, many films simply refuse to address this topic for various reasons. However, more recently, Jordan Peele’s 2017 box office hit Get Out explicates contemporary race relations in America. It is time to bring all of these separate elements together in the analysis of one specific film, according to class text, “analyzing levels of meaning below the surface story can greatly enhance enjoyment as well as understanding of a film” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014. p. 10.03).
