The movie Enough speaks to the audience regarding domestic violence. The main character’s name changes throughout the movie to maintain hidden from her ex-husband but she is called by the name Slim. The beginning of the movie shows how Slim met her husband Mitch. Mitch met Slim at a dinner where she was a waitress. Mitch made a bet with one of his friends that he could have a sexual encounter with Slim by the same afternoon that he met her. He successfully completed his bet, and continued dating Slim. Mitch and Slim get married after a short period of dating and have a baby girl together. Their daughter’s name is Gracie. Mitch was not faithful to Slim and seen another women after Gracie was born. Slim suffered from physical and emotional abuse by her husband. Slim’s daughter also suffered from the events taken place. Although Gracie was never hit, it is likely she was still stressed from the events that took place. Slim and Gracie were constantly moving, and Slim struggled to ensure the safety of Gracie. It was hard for Slim to escape Mitch, but she did everything in her power to keep her daughter safe. The book Marriages, Families, and Relationships written by multiple authors explains the term intimate partner violence as, “The physical or emotional abuse of spouses of either gender, cohabitating or noncohabitating heterosexual or same-sex partners, or former spouses or intimate partners” (Lamanna, Riedmann, and Stewart, p. 310). Mitch showed many signs of intimate partner violence during the movie. At the beginning of the movie Mitch used Slim for his sexual pleasure and then continued to hit, abuse, and threaten her throughout the movie. The book also uses the term Intimate terrorism, describing it as, “Intimate terrorism refers to abuse that is decisively oriented to controlling one’s partner through fear and intimidation” (Lamanna, Riedmann, and Stewart, p. 315). Mitch made sure that he was intimidating to Slim. He would stalk her and ensure her that he would always be there when she clearly did not want him to be. Slim was constantly terrorized and was always checking on her daughter and always felt as if someone was watching her. The Marriages, Families, and Relationships book also, describes the term emotional abuse directly as, “…often making verbal threats or routinely making comments that damage a partner’s self esteem” (Lamanna, Riedmann, and Stewart, p. 315).
