Difficult Populations

Thanks to globalisation, you are likely to work with Japanese, French, Chinese, German and all sorts of other nationalities. It is important to recognise that people from different cultures are different in a variety of ways.

2) When you think about working professionally with members of this group, are there traits, characteristics, or other issues about the group that you would be curious about, concerned about, or intimidated by? Why would understanding diversity issues be important to you as a human services worker? I would think that Native Americans would be harder to work with because they may not agree with everything the worker is trying to do. They may feel weak to ask for help. They have many beliefs that may come in the way of receiving help, such as using certain medicines or getting government help. It would be important to understand this group so that the service worker does not offend the client and can help them using their knowledge of their culture.

I experienced a cultural barrier when I was working down in the main floor as one of the service users was Indian. In “Becoming a Helper” by Marianne Schneider Corey and Gerald Corey, the chapters go over how to understand diversity and some of the common concerns of being in the helping career. In the chapter on diversity, the authors go over the importance of different cultures and the possible biases that you could have. It is important to approach these biases with an ethical point of view to be able to help the client. By being aware of the difference in cultures that some of the clients that the therapist will be seeing will allow the therapist to work with the client in a better way, fitting and respecting their culture and rules. The chapter gives advice to research and look into different cultures so you will be more aware and be able to help in a better way. Cultural diversity is something that has a lot of strength in the helping field. By knowing other cultures, the therapists and counselors will better understand their clients and be able to help in a broader spectrum.

As human services workers we have to be aware of the different cultures and how to respond to them so that we are able to provide the best treatment the clients. The American Psychological Association suggest that we first need to learn about ourselves by exploring our historical roots, beliefs, and values so that we can realize the pervasive role culture plays in our lives (Clay, 2010). After accomplishing this we need to educate ourselves about the different cultures we are going to work with through journal articles and books, along with learning a second language is a good way to further cultural education (Clay, 2010). I am the product of a military upbringing, which allowed me to live in different parts of the world. This allowed me and my family to explore what other cultures are like as well as realize that Americans and our way of life is not the only culture that exists on the entire planet. I realized that the negative perceptions that other Americans had of people of German and Asian descent was directly related to lack of exposure and an unwillingness to educate ourselves about other cultures.

The intercultural challenges I am currently facing is my CQ knowledge. I am having challenges because I cannot find common ground when working with a variety of cultures. For example, I work as a customer service representative in a call center and I’m around a variety of cultures. I find it very hard to understand everyone’s triggers, their dislikes, and likes, and why they behave or act a certain way with different situations. I try to ask questions to grasp an understanding of their behaviors, and still find it quite challenging to reach common ground. I try to be very open-minded, however, it always causes me to become frustrated.

Those of Asian Indian heritage tended to smell heavily of curry or the food they ate.  Also, many of the women did not shave their armpits or legs.  Many cultures around the world do not place as much emphasis on vanity as Westerners do, so these stereotypes can easily be made. One of the doctors was from India as well but he was neither smelly, dirty, or sloppy.  He did advise many of his Indian patients the importance of eating a better diet, stating that obesity was becoming a problem in their culture. One stereotype that I tended to make was that Asians have two left feet and could not walk on a treadmill. For some reason or another, it seemed to be a trend. Although it wasn’t the case for all, it seemed to be the majority. Before doing this study, I’m sure I could have easily mistaken some East Indians as Chinese. Going from Wheeling, WV to working in a multicultural city was an awesome experience! Not only did I learn a lot professionally, but I also learned a lot personally. It was very interesting to meet people of so many different backgrounds with so many different languages, beliefs, and characteristics.

It is always helpful to have some type of knowledge in case you meet or begin working with a person who is a member of a diverse group. If ever I encounter someone whose diversity I am not familiar with, I ask him or her questions to learn more. I do my best not to offend them by asking general questions and let them lead the conversation. I usually start off by asking where a person is from and go from there. I make it a point to let them know that I am always interested in learning about diverse groups so that they know I am curious about their culture.

The importance of understanding cultural, ethnic and gender differences by managers and professionals in a business setting is essential to make the work environment comfortable. In every culture there are basic standards of thinking, and acting and these cultural differences strongly influence workplace values and communication. What may be considered acceptable and natural in the workplace for one person may be unacceptable for another person. To work effectively with people of different cultures, I believe that people should not assume before getting to know the person. That all the stereotypes should be ignored because history or one person’s skin tone or actions does not define all the people that are part of that culture. The biggest threat to humans today is the rapid growth of the human population. Not many people know about how over population is effecting the environment and the few people who do don't know what to do to help. Over population is the "greatest non-issue of the past 100 years" unless you count global warming (Blair 27). Over human population has been over looked for years. In order to solve this problem we must come up with a solution. There is not only one solution, but a good start is to make contraceptives more available for third world countries.
