Difference In America

Compassion, commitment, courage; three words that I would associate with the role of being a nurse. By going into nursing I believe that I will be able to make a difference, even changing one life for the better is far more rewarding than anything I could ever imagine. I have always admired the role nurses play in the lives of so many, not only patients, but also the families of those in their care. I believe that it is essential for a nurse to be able to listen and communicate with not only their patients but also those around them.

The main reason I desire to become a nurse is to help people. As a volunteer at Alden Gardens of Waterford, I found serving others in the slightest possible way, brings joy to my life. For instance, a few months ago, I sat next to a woman who felt very anxious to be left alone due to a previous traumatic event. I talked with her for two hours before her family came to visit. Through this experience, I learned that encouraging words make a difference in a person’s life. This is only one experience that demonstrates why I enjoy giving to others in need. Nursing is a practice in which nurses promote health and the well-being of patients. I believe that nursing is not only a job that prevents and cures illness, but has a deeper meaning and understanding. Becoming a nurse gives the opportunity to maximize and promote patients’ well-being. It is a way to learn and understand new perspectives and expand prior knowledge, to build relationships with patients, community, and other nurses, in addition to learning how to empathize and realize the patient’s needs, and to value and see people as human beings. I think even with the list given is not enough to define or explain a nurse. I believe being a nurse is a diverse and immeasurable experience, and what happens in this field is unknowing and uncertain. My goal in nursing practices is to take in life experiences and use the skills and ideas learned to shape me to become a better nurse and a better person.

Most important, I treat my patients, families, and coworkers the way I want to be treated. Throughout my nursing career I have been recognized as a compassionate nurse by my co-workers, patients and physicians. I use my critical thinking to provide excellent care to my patients. Professionally, I maintain a very high level of autonomy and responsibility. I have taken additional roles beyond staff nurse and I have stepped up to take on higher-level duties and responsibilities. For example, am currently a member of the falls committee, and preceptor for BSN nursing students. I have served on the unit based council and conducts peer reviews. My vision for myself as a nurse is that I will care for all patients holistically. I will allow the patient to participate and input ideas into his or her care. I will allow patients to incorporate some of their experiences from their personal lives, and alter my care based on those experiences. I will see the patient as a unique human being and treat all patients with respect and dignity. I will encompass the values that I embrace in everything I do. I will be accountable for my actions and practice within the scope of my license.

My philosophy of nursing comes directly from my desire to help people. I want to be a nurse because I enjoy being around people in their times of need and I get internal satisfaction by serving those that need help. I remember when I did some volunteer work for a hospital and that is when I realized my passion for nursing. I believe that the cure for many of the people's ailments is not just in medicine, it is in the care that they receive as patients in hospitals and their homes. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people's lives by helping them recover from their ailments.

Nursing is an honorable career, but it is more than just a career. I chose to be a nurse because this allows me to interact more with people. Nursing is a great profession; it allows people to influence and touch lives.
