Compassion, commitment, courage; three words that I would associate with the role of being a nurse. By going into nursing I believe that I will be able to make a difference, even changing one life for the better is far more rewarding than anything I could ever imagine. I have always admired the role nurses play in the lives of so many, not only patients, but also the families of those in their care. I believe that it is essential for a nurse to be able to listen and communicate with not only their patients but also those around them.
Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have been able to work with both the elderly and young children through my work experiences. I got involved with Age Uk, Bousfield play centre and was invited to a nursing and midwifery taster week. Whilst working at Bousefield Play centre I was able to see that every child is different and has their own way of expressing themselves. This opened my eyes to the fact that within nursing every patient in your care is different and this requires nurses to be able to adapt to each unique individual. To add to this, I was invited to attend a nursing and midwifery taster week, from this I

I dealt with this by approaching her in a friendly manner and reassured her that I was listening. I was also able to enunciate my words in order for her to lip read. With Age UK my abilities were tested and I faced many new challenges that I had not dealt with before such as being able to deal with emotionally challenged situations. From this I have discovered that you must use your initiative as you can never be fully prepared for the challenges that you will face especially in the field of nursing but I am confident that I will be able to meet future obstacles and face them to the best of my
Independently plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. Provide Nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
This essay will demonstrate my reflective abilities within an episode of care in which I have been involved with during my practice placement. It will discuss several issues binding nursing practice with issues of ethics and the model of reflection which provided me with a good structure and which I found most appropriate, is Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988). This particular model incorporates - description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and the action plan.
When I think of the word nurse, I immediately think of the words care and kindness. Being a nurse takes a special type of person because they are constantly putting their needs aside and working to help the patients.
Many older adults ask the question,” How might a nurse or healthcare educator approach a
This essay takes into consideration my first placement in the first year on a neurological ward at the Colman Hospital (Caroline House) for nine weeks (7th March 2017 -7th May 2017). During my time on ward, I have been able to realise various skills and develop my knowledge around different professionals and patients. while on the ward, I have worked with a range of professionals and also, contributed in different activities aiming towards my professional development which helped me to gained an understanding into the role of a nurse. When reflecting on the past few weeks of clinical experience, there is known to be many events in which I can critically reflect upon in order to improve my clinical practice. During my second week of clinical, I had been assigned with a tough patient. My patient was in his late 50’s, was a chronic alcoholic and was an avid smoker. He has a medical history of COPD, hypertension, and liver cirrhosis resulting from his alcoholic background. However, he had been recently diagnosed with a right-sided stroke. He was homeless as he lived in the motel in town, and had no family or friends to lean on for support. In particular to my personal critical reflection, my patient had signed a DNR with limited interventions. According to his wishes, he requested not to receive any artificial nutrition by tube and refused antibiotics. As a nursing student, wishing to help people recover, this was a specific component in which I could not wrap my head around.
I would like to have compassion, provide holistic care, and be culturally competent. Compassion Compassion is the act of caring. It is the concern of others through sympathy and empathy. Compassion is a quality each and every nurse should have. It helps develop trust with the patient as well as build a relationship.
With my career goal is to become a nurse; just not ole any nurse, a great one. My strengths are very important to have. Faith is needed to help get through tough days and to also spiritually help your patients. I feel like whenever you do a task it should be done with integrity. Being a nurse, you have to be strong-minded and also able to heal and comfort mentally, emotionally, and physically, all great signs of a leader. You always have to remember that you can’t always do everything alone. Teamwork is very important in the healthcare field. Each job is important and is connected to one another. Communication is the key to many careers and very important to nursing because you have to build positive relationships with the people and patients around you.
The following essay is a reflective account on an event that I, a student nurse encountered whilst on my second clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a Fountain Nursing Home in Granite City. I have chosen to give thought to the event described in this essay as I feel that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective communication skills especially when treating patients that are suffering with a mental illness. Upon arriving to the Nursing home for the second time on Thursday November 14,2013; assigned the same patient as before. On meeting my patient the first thing I noticed myself doing without even thinking about it was giving her a visual inspection. Before nursing school I never really looked at
Initially I was very apprehensive in sharing the truth behind what ultimately made me decide to return to school to become a nurse. This would entail reliving both joyful and painful memories of my life which I believe to have mapped out the path that I was meant to follow. I was a young, stay at home mom for many years. being the full time primary care giver to my three children was the most rewarding experience of my life. reflecting back I have found remarkable similarities in the traits and skills of mothers and nurses. many of these characteristics are utilized by nurses with each and every patient they encounter . These include but are not limited to compassion , empathy, prioritization, dedication, understanding nonverbal communication.
Hello! Today I’m going to talk about my personal definition of nursing and my personal philosophy of nursing. My personal definition of nursing is a care giver who uses evidence based practice, their nursing experience and nursing skills to the best of their ability to promote wellness, patient center care and empowerment to patients to make positive health care decisions. Important nursing traits are: compassion, the ability to adapt with change and being a humble nurse. As nurses we have the unique privilege to be educators, heal through our actions and words of encouragement. Nurses are often on the front lines as we are leaders in educating on health care disease, prevention and cures. We heal through our actions by using critical thinking
In addition, I feel that nurses make a big difference and I am prepared to follow a career where I'll make a true difference. Additionally I know that nursing is also challenging and emotional but I also know that it'll make me feel good because I would be helping others. I would be able to support and take care of individuals and their family since I truly have excellent communication skills. Also I enjoy meeting new individuals because it has improved my communication skills and learnt to be understanding. I hope to offer the same high
I’ve been through a lot of changes throughout these years. My hair has changed from curly to straight and it’s color has changed multiple times, I have got braces and teeth have gotten straighter. I have gotten more mature over the years and my body has grown. What I want to do in the future has changed too. When I was younger I wanted to be a doctor. Then I wanted to work with animals, and wanted to go into the army. Now I’m set on becoming a nurse. I am going to be going to college for this. I will learn everything I need to know about being a nurse, get whatever degrees I need to get, and just go from there to become a nurse.
I sit here, thinking about my life and all of my memories, looking at a blank page, wondering where to begin.
The part I was most fearful of. As they entered with their nurses one by one the fear subsided. My confidence rose as I had a greater self concept (Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. . Communicating effectively. Pg. 34) of myself, I knew that I go do it from this point on.(Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. . Communicating effectively. Pg 32) The initial anxiety had surpassed and I was able to communicate with the clients. I started listening (Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. 2015. Communicating effectively. Pg. 122) to the stories they were telling me as we were doing the activity. Yes most of them were very boring and did not make too much sense but I was still active listening and being as responsive as possible. I utilized verbal communication (Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. 2015. Communicating effectively. Pg.58) skills such as speaking in a calm and welcoming tone, sounding excited to be there and really giving my personal opinions on subjects and not dismissing the elderly like most of the employees there do. I used a mix of Informative listening( Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. 2015. Communicating effectively. Pg.141) where I attempted to understand more about their early life and Empathic listening (Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. 2015. Communicating effectively. Pg.142) by trying to connect with them on an emotional level and really committing myself fully to the conversation. I soon realized I was experiencing Cultural Listening(Hybels, S., & Weaver, R. L. 2015.
