For those of you who think switching from the "real thing" to diet soda will help in losing weight; you are in for a rude awakening. More and more research is showing that not only will it not help but there is evidence that artificially sweetened diet beverages could actually cause you to gain weight.
Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio -- School of Medicine did a ten-year study of people who drank diet soda. They studied approximately 500 people and they found that people who drank two or more diet sodas a day saw their waist line grow 70% more than those who didn't drink diet soda.
As to why the drinkers of diet soda gain more weight needs additional research before the exact causes are definitively determined. However, speculation as to the cause focuses on the effects of artificial sweeteners and how the mind and body reacts to them.

Researchers divided the mice into two groups. Group A ate food laced with the sweetener aspartame. After three months the aspartame group had higher levels of blood sugar than the mice that ate normal food. There is also speculation that same is true of other artificial sweeteners even ones made from sugar derivates or from the Stevia genus of plants.
Besides artificial sweeteners, it is further theorized that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has similar effects on weight gain as artificial sweeteners. HFCS is preferred to cane sugar by food and beverage manufacturers because it tastes similar to sugar, mixes well and is cheaper than sugar.
As ironic as it is, more and more mounting evidence is proving that sugar may be the more beneficial sweetener when trying to lose weight. However, weight loss still comes down to consuming fewer calories than you burn. As we all know sugar is dense in calories so if you absolutely have to have a sweetener you may very well want to consider using sugar, but use it
Yes, diet soda has no or fewer calories than a regular soda does but water has way more less calories then diet soda. People drink soda because it is sweet and cheap and with diet soda they drink a lot of it that they might as well settle with drinking a regular soda at least better than a diet soda that is much worse than you can imagine. Diet soda still has sugar or corn syrup to sweeten the soda and it doesn’t matter with one is in the soda because they are both unhealthy and soda companies will just comply to stop your complaining they are not really improving the drink just putting your mind to ease about what is in the soda they sell. “Regular and Diet Coke have the same ingredients save for the type of sweeteners used in their production. This difference came about as the result of the demand for a soft drink that is less fattening and which can be consumed by people with diabetes.” (DifferenceBetween). Online there was this video that some people made in Japan and they were asking if people would buy Diet water and everyone who were asked just flat out said no. The idea of buying a drink that is pretty much the same thing is rather foolish but yet there are people who buy diet

It is commonplace that diet soda is an acceptable diet food. So many people believe that by drinking diet soda they will reduce their calories and sugar intake therefore, lose weight. Even though it is not natural sugar, artificial sweeteners are just as addictive. Cheryl Forberg R.D. author of Flavor First states, when the taste buds sense sweetness, the body expects calories to come with it. There are no calories in diet soda so your body is craving calories for energy, which makes you crave food and overeat, leading to obesity (Lajollamom). In addition, many diet soda drinkers feel that
With the increase in the number of the diseases and awareness regarding the health care system, Sugar tax is the simple remedy which will not only reduce the sales of the drinks but also lower the kilojoule intake leading to reduction in the body weight and ultimately improvement in the heath. The sugar-sweetened beverages are less healthy than other sources of added sugars and calories and are more likely to contribute to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay than other foods. According to the recent research diet soda and artificial sweeteners contained in diet soda may adversely affect glucose levels and may increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and diabetes, in part, through impairment of glucose and increase in waist circumference.
A single twelve ounce can of regular Coca-Cola contains thirty-nine grams of sugar, and 140 calories, as opposed to the zero on both counts that a can of diet Coke has. Without sugar or calories, it allows people to drink more than one per day, if they aren’t concerned about the large amounts of caffeine, of course. This lack of sugar and calories allows for a clean conscience when ordering a glass of diet Coke at the restaurant while with friends, and for a lower number on the scale. A simple diet shouldn’t keep a person from enjoying a can of

Diet Coke is just as harmful as regular coke, maybe even more. Diet Coke provides no nourishment and would replace a more nutritious drink that you could have drunk while potentially depleting your body of essential minerals. Regular Coke can trigger insulin, which sends the body into fat storage mode. Drinking these kind of beverages will probably make you hungry and thirsty even more. Either way if Diet Coke is better than regular Coke it is bad because there is still a lot of sugar and fat. Kids that are under age shouldn't drink these because they will probably get high blood pressure or diabetes. Other people would think the same thing because none of the drinks are not healthy or good for your body to drink. This is important

The problem of evil is often summarized as followed: If God is omnipotent (all powerful) and omnibenevolent (wholly good) there should be no evil. There is evil in the world, so God cannot be omnipotent or omnibenevolent or either. One of the earliest theologians to address the problem of evil is St. Augustine. In his book, On Free Choice of the Will Augustine states, “If man is a good, and cannot act rightly unless he wills to do so, then he must have free will, without which he cannot act rightly.” Augustine’s solution to the problem of evil is that God gives humans free will to do good or evil. The evil that humans do is the evil which is evident in the world. This shows that evil is not created by God, but instead evil exists because of
Dr. Pepper is probably one of my favorite things in the world. It started out innocent when my mom would let me have a couple sips of her Dr. pepper as a kid and later it grew to an actual addiction. In my house we fight if someone drinks the last can without putting another pack in the fridge, and when someone takes the first sip out of your drink, its known that they took the best part. I thought it was normal for people to look forward to their eyes watering as the fizzy first sip runs down their throat. I never knew that someone could be addicted to soda, but now I believe it is a real issue that my whole family along with myself struggles with. In this paper I will define my problem, explain the prevalence of the issue and the prevalence
How has this impacted our health? According to Dr. Barry Popin of the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, studies have shown that people who shift from non calorie drinks to sweetened drinks gain weight, probably because they do not compensate by eating less. Popin says that drinking calories in liquid form does not register with our appetite controls.
