Deciding what one wants to do for the rest of their life is definitely not a simple decision to make. Hundreds of factors affect one’s decision and sometimes, their plans do not fall through exactly as they had anticipated. Knowing what one wants to pursue is one thing, but knowing how to go about one’s goals and willing to put in all the hard work required to succeed is another thing. Staying focused in my academics, being able to connect with people of all age groups, and building character have all played a great influence in my life thus far. From the start, I knew determination would play a vital role in my academic goals as well as my career goals. Determination displays how committed we are and how much we are willing to give in order …show more content…
My desire to work in management for nonprofit organizations has grown greatly due to the experience I have gained through all my volunteer work over the past few years. A vast majority of my volunteering services were performed at nonprofit organizations where I would participate in a project that would ultimately help a group of people in need. For example, in the fall of 2014, I was secretary of a new student owned organization known as Muslims for Humanity. This group’s purpose was to get students involved in community service work in order to help not only their own community, but the community of others as well. At the time, the organization partnered with United Muslim Relief, a national nonprofit organization that focuses on human welfare. One occasion, the group met at a location where hundreds of boxes filled with various supplies were donated by locals in the area, seeking to help people caught in the emergency crisis in Syria. These supplies include food, clothing, hygienic supplies, and medical supplies. Our task was to organize and package these items to be shipped to Syria in order to aid innocent Syrians caught in the crossfires of war. There, I was assigned to direct a fraction of the volunteers to sort through the donated clothing. People of all age groups gathered that day to help anyway they could; families, students, and even children came to assist. The ability to be able to speak to a large crowd of people comes easily …show more content…
If I had decided to pursue a career simply because it offered good job security or an efficient salary, deep down I would not be truly satisfied with what I was doing with my time. I do not intend to seek others’ praises for pursuing a career in nonprofit; I truly feel getting a degree in sociology and public affairs would help me accomplish my dreams and genuinely make me both a happy and better person. People find their passions in a variety of different fields even if it does not offer the best pay, job security, etc. What it does offer them is the opportunity to be happy in doing what they
I was indecisive of my future career path. My mom would tell me the classic “You should be a lawyer” or “You should be a doctor.” I would go along with her idea for a couple weeks until I jumped off the bandwagon. I wasn’t passionate about either of those fields; I was interested in both math and science and as a young girl. As I got older, I became invested in technology due to my love of gaming, but I didn’t know that people devote their lives to technology until I interned.
In contrast to corporations serving stakeholders and customers; nonprofits are ultimately directed to serving the public or specific groups and audiences. Unlike corporations who distribute a product, nonprofits services are delivered in the form of intangible or tangible products. Boards of these organizations are not structured in the same preciseness as those of major corporations. Companies with large resources have the
The career choice out of the several different descriptions in this week’s reading for me would be an Evaluator. This person is trained to make through assessment of a need to continue with certain nonprofit agencies. This position is a key benefit to the human services career field, without this person there would be numerous amount of money wasted on nonprofit agency that aren’t helping people with their problems. evaluator is need simply because some programs are useless and they need to be cut because they are wasting money.
Once the high school level was entered (9-12 Grades), both leadership skill and athletic skills began to manifest itself. Determination was a word that was used quite often to navigate me through high school. Unknowingly to me, this word (determination) would become a source of strength for the events and trails encounter
Determination is the main behavior I need to adopt in order for me to achieve my goals. I will have to keep my head up even when I make a bad grade. Not only do I need to keep my head up, but also I need to finish things when I start them. Determination will help me get through these next four years without stressing as much. Adopting this behavior will help me succeed
Through my experiences with philanthropic work I realize the commitment it takes. I also understand the outcome and the feeling you get knowing you have been a part of something bigger than yourself. Growing up in a small town I have grown accustomed to the idea of helping others. Every year my hometown puts together a philanthropy event called DUCK Week. DUCK Week stands for Doing Unselfish Charities for Kids. It is a weeklong philanthropy event where we as a community come together and help a family in need. DUCK Week started when I was in kindergarten and has grown as I have progressed through school. When I reached my first year in high school I was really able to participate the most in DUCK Week. I was involved in several committees including finance and technology. Being a part of these committees allowed me to get in on the ground floor and assist with the moths of planning that went into DUCK Week. When I reached my senior year I was defiantly able to look back and be proud of the work we had done. At our peak we were able to raise $170,000. Philanthropy is something I have first hand experience with and I know how much the outcome can help people. That I why I fell I best fit into the
I choose a career in the Non-Profit Coordination field because of two reasons; the first is I am an effective coordinator of people and resources, and secondly I am civic minded and want to devote my energies to the betterment of human conditions in St. Louis. As a practicing Catholic, who lives by the Golden Rule, and has been an active volunteer for many years with various community based programs, my understanding of the inner workings of nonprofit organizations is extensive. The program will benefit from my ability to motivate team members; in my current position, I have led my team two years in a row in achieving “top 10” in customer service nation-wide. The program is also looking for a person who creates and maintains donor relationships
Throughout my four years of high school, I worked with a non-profit organization called Shirts Across America. It worked to send high school and college students to New Orleans, Louisiana to help the community rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. For my junior and senior year, I worked as a core team member; my duties included marketing, fundraising, planning and organizing the trip and facilitating a group on the actual trip. I took on the responsibility to bring more people of color on the trips and making it more accessible for these students who may have been looked over. This past summer I worked as a teacher’s aid for the local YMCA in Seattle. The school that I was working with served a low income, diverse community.
Working for a nonprofit agency most of my professional career the article provided was dead on about the pros and cons of nonprofit agencies. Most have entry level jobs that require us to do an enormous amount of work with very little pay. Although there are certain tax breaks that come with nonprofits agency as our book and the article indicated, the company has to work very hard to obtain and keep the status (Weinbach & Taylor, 2015). However, I would spend my entire career working with a nonprofit company despite the many challenges I feel the rewards are greater. As the article stated it’s when working in a nonprofit agency you have the chance to move up in the organization quicker (Root, 2015). I also like the regulation that comes with
Some people grow up knowing exactly what they want to do; I, on the other hand, do not know exactly what career path I am going to take, but I have learned that is okay. I went through most of high school presuming that I had to have my life planned out by my senior year and I recently realized that was an unrealistic expectation to put on myself.
Nonprofit organizations broadly described operate to achieve missions that serve the common good. Graduate study in the field of nonprofit management focuses on the development of leadership skills for nonprofit managers and provides education in areas such as general operations, human resources, strategies, and fund development (Nachmias, 2008). Students of nonprofit management also develop proficiency in other matters such as nonprofit legal issues, organizational development, donor relations, financial management and fund-raising, volunteer, and human resource management, and pro-gram evaluation, to name a few competencies (Nachmias, 2008).Many nonprofit management programs have a theoretical component, and most programs rely on experiential learning as a vital element of a graduate student’s education. Future studies of community impact should include analysis components from the fields of nonprofit management education, service learning, capacity building, and nonprofit evaluation, and take into consideration specific factors that may affect study outcomes.
I am interested in non-profit for the motives of community, personal life experiences, and giving back. I firmly believe non-profit is the only logical structure for businesses to operate from. The reason behind this belief is the fact that when an organization is communal, efficiency is more of a result and resources become less scarce. When organizations are not for profit, the inequality gap slowly but surely closes. I am an advocate for non-profit due to my life experiences; I grew up in a rough, low-income, and diverse neighborhood in the city of Denver, Colorado.
My passion for nonprofits partially comes from my experience working for two separate nonprofits, and partially from me wanting to help make a difference in this world. My time at PACS made me reflect on the two previous jobs I had at nonprofits and how all three intended to make a difference in this world. Furthermore, I pondered what the impact was of a key difference on the two nonprofits I previously worked. The key difference is that one was a Christian organization, the other was not. PACS showed me a middle ground of sorts, were the organization itself is not Christian or religious even though it is created with values that are held by
The diversity of nonprofit organizations, services provided and the problems faced shows that nonprofits require leadership with an in-depth understanding of the multifaceted nonprofit landscape. Understanding the culture of nonprofit work is also crucial and much easier to understand once you have been through a nonprofit management program. My career interests lead me towards an avocation of a deeper knowledge of strategic management/planning, legal structure and standards, increase my skills in quantitative analysis of policy, financial governance and developing fundraising strategies. These areas allow for macro management within the nonprofit
Some people believe that talent and a winning attitude are all you need in order to succeed in your endeavors, but a winning attitude means having determination, which many people lack. As seen on wisdomforthesoul.org, “Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.” Determination is an important factor in the overall success or failure of a person’s efforts. Unfortunately, determination is not something that comes easy to the majority of people. To be truly determined, a person must first be passionate about what they’re doing. Passion, however, is only the first step towards resolution and determination. One must have a clear goal in mind, and be willing to do anything to achieve said goal. Once they have set
