Since 2013 there have been approximately 1,500 acts of mass gun violence in The United States, of those 1,500 almost 300 have taken place in or around a school. In five years there are around 1,800 days. That makes for a shooting every twelve days. Sometimes people can look at these statistics and brush them off like they were nothing. As humans, we are more likely to focus on the facts that make our hearts warm and fuzzy, not those that make us sad and distraught. This leads to a growing problem of desensitization. Desensitization is a word that describes what happens when people see, hear, or feel something enough that they are completely unaffected by it. This is exactly the case in not only real life but in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. …show more content…

It is not a question of whether or not millennials feel empathy towards those affected by violence; of course, we're empathetic. Nevertheless, when violence occurs as frequently as it does in America, it's difficult for us to be taken aback every single time it happens.” Violence is all around us. Everyday we are exposed to some type of violence, whether its in video games, television, or real life, it's everywhere and in most cases it's unavoidable. This constant showcase of violence is causing the younger generations to grow up believing that this is the norm, leaving them to be completely desensitized to it. This also happened in “The Crucible” Abigail Williams began to be completely unbothered by her actions towards the townspeople. Here, Proctor is talking about how the real devil of The Crucible is not Satan, but instead its people who don’t step up to tell the truth or who refuse to see the truth. The same thing happens in America now, those who know what they can do to stop the violence and what must happen to keep the death toll from rising, but they refuse to do so because they are scared of what will happen if they do.
