Since 2013 there have been approximately 1,500 acts of mass gun violence in The United States, of those 1,500 almost 300 have taken place in or around a school. In five years there are around 1,800 days. That makes for a shooting every twelve days. Sometimes people can look at these statistics and brush them off like they were nothing. As humans, we are more likely to focus on the facts that make our hearts warm and fuzzy, not those that make us sad and distraught. This leads to a growing problem of desensitization. Desensitization is a word that describes what happens when people see, hear, or feel something enough that they are completely unaffected by it. This is exactly the case in not only real life but in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. …show more content…
It is not a question of whether or not millennials feel empathy towards those affected by violence; of course, we're empathetic. Nevertheless, when violence occurs as frequently as it does in America, it's difficult for us to be taken aback every single time it happens.” Violence is all around us. Everyday we are exposed to some type of violence, whether its in video games, television, or real life, it's everywhere and in most cases it's unavoidable. This constant showcase of violence is causing the younger generations to grow up believing that this is the norm, leaving them to be completely desensitized to it. This also happened in “The Crucible” Abigail Williams began to be completely unbothered by her actions towards the townspeople. Her actions began to be so normalized, that it became part of daily life and it was completely normal for her to run around town accusing citizens of being witches, all the while knowing just how destructive her actions …show more content…
I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face, and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud—God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!” Miller 11. Here, Proctor is talking about how the real devil of The Crucible is not Satan, but instead its people who don’t step up to tell the truth or who refuse to see the truth. The same thing happens in America now, those who know what they can do to stop the violence and what must happen to keep the death toll from rising, but they refuse to do so because they are scared of what will happen if they do.
This excerpt from "The Crucible", written by Arthur Miller demonstrates how fear can overwhelm people in different ways and shows how strong an individual must be to deal with this fear. Although people in this society may appear strong and claim that they oppose the devil, everyone is weakened by human instincts which forces some people to yield to the devil's commands. "The boot of Lucifer" haunts everyone in the court room and forces even the strongest of men to face their ignorance. This scene is particularly powerful because it describes how Proctor is completely overwhelmed with fear and frustration with the court to a point where he "laughs insanely". Proctor has reached a point of insanity and can no longer bear the weight of the burden he brought
According to the past summaries ledgers provided by GunViolenceArchive.org the number of gun related incidents has increased over the past three years, along with the number of children deaths. Furthermore, as demonstrated by the charts, the number of deaths has been steadily increasing over the past three years by about 1,000 deaths, a crazy number that should be going in the opposite direction.
The innocent are compelled to commit to seeing the devil, but then name another honest person unfairly, so they will not be punished. The Puritans have to be careful of their actions and words, because the girls could accuse them at any point. This is paramount for John Proctor, who is accused when Mary Warren tries to speak out and end the drama with Abigail and the girls. Mary Warren is part of the group which danced in the woods, and told Abby and the girls to stop. However they refuse, knowing that if they told the truth now they will be punished for all the innocent lives they damaged. They keep proving Mary Warren wrong when she and Proctor are close to exposing them, and this pressure finally ends up drawing Mary Warren over to their side. Mary now sets her sights on blaming John Proctor. As Mary Warren says on page 952 of The Crucible, “You're the Devil's man!...My name, he want my name. "I'll murder you," he says, "if my wife hangs! We must go and overthrow the court"”. John Proctor is shocked by this false accusation that Mary Warren declares, but goes along with it, knowing there is no more God in the town to save his
Since 2013, there have been 175 school shootings in America. That is such a horrible number to hear. There's been so much activity on school shooting that it doesn't come as a shock when one happens. As Obama said after the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, where a gunman went on a rampage and murdered at least 10 people, “ Somehow this has become a routine.” All shooters have a motive and it has to do with their life at home, how they were treated at school, and how their mental health is.
From this quote, it is clear that, despite worldwide news coverage, mass school shootings or what may be described as rampage shootings, are actually rare events. They only make up a small proportion of the thousands of gun deaths per year in America as a whole.
“Why are you concealing? Have you sold yourself to lucifer?”(42). Accusations of witchcraft was one of the worst forms of defamation in Puritan society. Many unfortunate Puritans falsely came under this scrutiny due to personal rivalries, and the corruption of power. Arthur Miller illustrates this in his book, The Crucible, through an intricate web of characters lies and drama. In the end, Salem's downfall was caused by personal feuds, religious ideology, and the corruption of power, conveying the central theme that people can easily turn on one another.
Thirteen people were killed at Columbine High School in 1999, thirty-three died during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, and twenty-seven people, twenty of whom were children no older than seven, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 (Kirk). These name only a few of the larger and most well-known school shooting incidences. In total, 297 people have lost their lives due to school-based shootings since 1980 (Kirk). Although this number may be small in comparison to death by guns overall, these instances are completely unwarranted and it is likely that they could have been avoided or at the very least reduced. These people, college and high school students, teachers, and even children, might still be alive today if our
People are constantly getting condemned for having certain beliefs, rituals, and religions and it’s not only in Author Miller’s drama either. Persecution of the Jewish people is a great example to compare ‘The crucible’ to. The leader of this whole oppression was Adolf Hitler; also, known as
Nine students were killed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A man opened fire in a church, in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people, including the pastor. Twenty-seven were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Twelve were killed in the Washington Navy Yard. This is only a few examples from a very long list. The grim truth is that mass shootings are becoming the new normal. Every few months, another mass shooting occurs and the public goes through the same routine of mourning, honoring, and ultimately debating. What causes these manic episodes of multiple, indiscriminate gun deaths? Some push for more gun control, others argue that the U.S. mental health system is a failure. Controversy aside,
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in.
There has been an average of one school shooting every week in America since the Sandy Hook shooting. On the fourteenth of December, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza not only killed his mother in her home, but also twenty children and six members of staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This was to be the third deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The Huffington Post reports that as of 2014, there have been over 200 school shootings. These have resulted in at least 94 deaths and over 156 serious and minor injuries. And, with an issue as emotive and contentious as the murder of school children, the question has been frequently asked: why do school shootings happen?
“A fire, a fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face, and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud—God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!” (Proctor, Act III, pg. 194) In The Crucible by Arthur Miller the people of Salem falsely accuse each other to find another to condemn and forget about their own flawed doings within the village. Some find the wrong in the mendacious and stand up, some fall into the temptation and weakness, and others try to find the veracity in it all. The Crucible is about courage, weakness, and truth which each individual faces throughout the plot of the play because of one mistake that happens further spiraling into deaths and disaster.
High school shootings have been occurring all over the country. All incidents leading to one or more deaths: Jonesboro, Fayetteville, Edinboro, Pearl, Moses Lake, Grayson, Olivehurst, Bethel, West Paducah, and many more. It will never happen to me, you could say, well, it could.y Behind school shootings students spend one hundred and eighty days per year at school, they spend so much time getting an education, but is the environment they’re in actually safe? There are many causes of school shootings and so they are effects.
We don’t need to be that vigilant in order to know that gun-related violence and massacres have infiltrated our society. There have been many cases of public mass shootings that have occurred, with some of them happening in schools. 2015 will now be known as the year of mass shootings in the United States, and this is also the reason why the discussion for new gun control laws has heighten in the media.
Gun violence has been around for centuries and there have been many mass shootings, homicides and suicides. There is always the argument on “do guns kill people” or “do people kill people”? What people really need to be looking at is the problem which is people stocking up on guns and not knowing how to properly handle them and all the mass shootings that are taking place. As a country, people need to be coming up with solutions instead of doing nothing.
