Since 2013, there have been 175 school shootings in America. That is such a horrible number to hear. There's been so much activity on school shooting that it doesn't come as a shock when one happens. As Obama said after the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, where a gunman went on a rampage and murdered at least 10 people, “ Somehow this has become a routine.” All shooters have a motive and it has to do with their life at home, how they were treated at school, and how their mental health is. Initially, for a school shooter to become an enemy to society they have to be raised differently. For example, Adam Lanza, shooter who caused the horrible deaths of children at Sandy Hook elementary, was raised by a mom who lived in a rural area in New Hampshire where hunting and shooting guns was a regular activity there. Adam showed signs of interest to guns at an early age and his mom would buy him guns to start collecting at age 14. At this point in time he was diagnosed mentally ill and he started to be obsessed with violent fantasies. A main reason his mom would buy him guns is so that they can share an interest in something together and bond. So you have to take into consideration that what happens whilst a child is growing up and how they are raised will impact future actions. …show more content…
The two shooters I previously talked about have mental disabilities. For example, Jose Reyes had shown signs of autism and Adam Lanza with undiagnosed schizophrenia. Not only do Jose and Adam have mental disorders, a majority of school shooters have signs of mental disorders. It's inevitable to avoid school shootings unless there is a change of gun laws but that is up to the government to figure out. Unfortunately school shootings will continue to happen and there has to be a cure for the forthcoming future to carry out the safety of kids and teachers around the
When thinking about school shootings names like Columbine and Sandy Hook pop up. Those are the most tragic by far, however everyone always ask why such a horrible crime happens, but no one has never stopped and researched why such hate crimes like those happen. Instead people resort to Channel 2 or Fox 5 for answers, not realizing that their story isn’t the full truth. I am truly against school shootings; looking for answers myself. If there’s one thing I’ve picked up from the media is how they portray school shootings with mental illness, but according to Alfred.edu/teen violence says, “They want to get back at those who hurt them or revenge.” Many adults always struggled to realize why things as vigorous as shootings happens; also fail to realize they are the start of something so tragic. There are several reasons that lead to a school shooting but only five are common.
In the US mental illness is not given a high priority and is highly stigmatized so people aren’t always willing to get the help they need for fear of judgment. Mental illness is often a factor in mass shootings, so general attention to this would be beneficial. However, this isn’t to say that all mass shooters do have a mental illness; many people live their day-to-day lives dealing with a mental illness, so the stigmatization of mental illness and also the bad representation of people with mental illnesses becomes dangerous. Though this is most likely not unique to the United States, better communication between adults and students is vital in preventing school shootings. Often the perpetrators felt they were wronged in some way and were not receiving the help they needed. Also, gun control plays a big role here as well. It is far too easy for young people to gain access to a parent’s weapon or to acquire their own. In light of many tragedies in the United States, I believe that gun control is a serious topic that needs to be delved
Thirteen people were killed at Columbine High School in 1999, thirty-three died during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, and twenty-seven people, twenty of whom were children no older than seven, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 (Kirk). These name only a few of the larger and most well-known school shooting incidences. In total, 297 people have lost their lives due to school-based shootings since 1980 (Kirk). Although this number may be small in comparison to death by guns overall, these instances are completely unwarranted and it is likely that they could have been avoided or at the very least reduced. These people, college and high school students, teachers, and even children, might still be alive today if our
School shootings are defined as being a mass shooting which involves a gun attack on an educational institution. The first known shooting in the United States happened during the 1700s. Four Lenape American Indians entered a schoolhouse near present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The schoolmaster, Enoch Brown, was shot and killed along with several other children in which only two survived. There have been hundreds of shootings since, and more specifically there have been at least 156 school shootings in America since 2013. School shootings are not a thing of the past, and they will probably still continue into the future. To prevent mass shootings in the future schools must have new safety measures in place, and certain steps such as gun control and easy access to mental help can ensure the safely of citizens here at home.
School shootings are terrifying to think about, but there are ways to help prevent the massacres from ever happening again. The first known school shooting was at the Texas Tower at the University of Texas in 1966 where Charles Whitman shot and killed 16 people while injuring 31 others. Who would have known since that date that we would have more then 200 deaths on school campuses? The most storied shooting in the 90’s was probably the Columbine massacre where on April 20, 1999 Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 32 students and faculty before turning the guns on themselves. The horror scene from the day will always be remembered in many lives and will continue over the years. There were many other horrible shootings over the years as
School shootings continue to happen so something should happen to prevent. There are different options to help prevent them. We can do something like putting more bans on guns, arm teachers, or reach out to kids to make them not want to do something so tragic. In my opinion none of those would create a full solution to the problem. A ban on guns would not help because like drugs, guns can be obtained illegally. Arming teachers I do not think would prevent help kids. It gives frustrated teachers power to end a life. Teachers can be strange too and could shoot up a school as well. Helping kids may cause some help, however it would be so hard to reach every kid. Or some kids are just too far gone and will only want to cause harm.
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in.
Since 1764, the United States has faced the tragedies of school shootings. Since 1982, 148 people have died and 181 people have been injured in school shootings alone. (Statista). I chose to examine three of the most tragic shootings that have happened in the U.S. and will examine the causes and what lead up to the massacres through examination of sources.
So how could someone commit a mass shooting? Many psychologists have given their own thoughts as to why someone would fulfil such a deadly personal mission. For the most part, it would appear that many school shooters do what they do for their moment in the spotlight. In this day and age of modern technology, there's no doubt the killer's face will soon be on everybody's social media feeds and on the front of newspapers all over the globe. Others, however, may commit a mass shooting to make themselves seem powerful. This is common when the shooter has been a victim of bullying or abuse, as being the one with control over everybody else gives them a certain rush of adrenaline and feeling of dominance they may have never had had before.
Society plays a big role in the development of a school shooter. When an individual feels isolated or excluded from a community and is a target for bullies, it often causes them to take out that repressed anger and lash out in heinous ways. Nowadays, students are typically at school five days a week for six to seven hours a day. That is a lot of time spent with classmates, and unfortunately, bullies. Bullying usually involves an imbalance of power, in which the bully hopes to establish a feeling of dominance over their victim. (Bullying, 2017) Being the victim of bullying is certainly an emotionally damaging situation, especially when one feels helpless and alone. Anger or discontent from the victim may develop into something deeper like hatred and the need for revenge, which is the reason why some individuals turn to shooting schools- to finally hurt others instead of being the one getting hurt. One horrifying example of bullying taking
In America's school systems it is estimated that for every 5 mentally ill students, only 1 will receive treatment. Of course, it is rare for a school shooting to occur. The shooters all had a motive to perform the act.
Unfortunately, school shootings and threats have become more common throughout the past 18 years. One of the first major school shootings that brought attention to gun violence in America was the shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. According to the U.S. History website state that two teens, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree throughout the school. After killing 12 students and one teacher, the boys then killed themselves. During the investigation on the boys motives, investigators came to the conclusion that most likely the shooting was connected to bullying because the boys were members of social outcast groups, and violence in video games. It is unfortunate that bullying may have been the cause of this awful event in history, but it is even more upsetting that school shootings like these, have happened again at an even worse
Unfortunately, the notion of schools being a safe place is no longer a trend across American schools. Disturbing mass shootings in the U.S continue to shock the media. A school shooting is when someone attacks a school using a gun. The Secret Service says these shootings are "deliberately selected as the location for the attack". The reasons massacres occur in schools is because of poor security, violence in video games/media, and bullying. Shockingly the U.S. has the most school shootings than any other country in the world. According to the FBI, mass shootings occur, on average, every 2 weeks in the U.S. While the cause of school shootings are sometimes unpredictable, it is a growing issue and they need to be prevented. Most shooters don’t have mental issues, they have a plan to kill, so there is no singular cause that creates violent people. On April 16th, 2007, the most deadly school massacre occurred. Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two students at Virginia-Tech. As Americans, we no longer should turn on the news and witness these gruesome murders. We try to make sense of these murders, but it’s ineffectual. There are measures we can take as a society to help. The number one question in a school massacre is, "why would a person that has a capable sense of mind even do that?” It is our moral responsibility to fix these issues. In order to stop this problem, we need to find its roots.
Most school shooters are white males often upper-class, 97% being male and 79% being white. Meanwhile since 1980 there has been 297 deaths due to school shootings. https://everytownresearch.org/reports/analysis-of-school-shootings/ says that there was 84 shootings in grades K-12 and 74 shootings in College and Universities durning 2013-15. During 95 of those shootings over half of the shooters intentionally injured or killed at least one other person with a gun. In 8 of those incidents the shooter took there own life. Many of the teens that caused a shooting had easy access to the
Emotional wellness issues have been frequently shown another big cause of these shootings. Most school shooters were mentally sick or demonstrated side effects of psychological wellness issues. An opportunity for mental and psychiatric help could help stop these shootings. According to newyorker.com, ¨, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure of the mental-health system than from easy access to guns. Eighty per cent of the population believes that mental illness is at least partially to
